313662 No.14671113

In the 80s and 90s, cartoons were treated as second class entertainment, designed only to sell toys. In a way, they still are, and have a huge assortment of primary merchandise, including toys, cards, games, etc. With gaming and otaku culture, cartoons (and anime in a sense) began to exist as their own standalone product.

With shit like pic related, is gaming going down the same path? We seem to be echoing the "demon scare" that D&D etc went through, except it'd about gender and sexual identity for some retarded reason

743f01 No.14671130

There were unique figure molds ready for FNAF merchandise within the same month it originally came out. Anyone who thinks this is an organic fad is delusional.

Nigger vidya was the toy for a long time. All those transformers and disney movie video games you're too underage to remember, all those licensed shat out vidya that plagued old consoles, were the toys.

9ba5ba No.14671222

This is was kinda tried in a way, in the form of physical DLC, which has already peaked and is well on the decline.

But games are very different from cartoons, in that games by themselves are significantly more profitable than cartoons, so there's less reason to use them to sell merch.

In a way yes in other ways now. Merch in vidya is now more so already established fans. The only similar practice you see today is making vidya to sell mircotranactions. Although, outside of mobile shit, mircotransactions are just tacked onto existing games to nickle and dime players.

>>14671391

To play doubles advocate, a couple of reasons why normalfags buy these. The first is that they're dirt-cheap. Since the designs all stem from the same base model, it undoubtedly doesn't take Funko long to make some subtle alterations to the base and put it into production as a "new" figure. Even easier if they're making an alternate costume for the same character, that can be little more than a new paint job. The low design and production costs (it's just a hunk of painted vinyl after all) means they can be sold on the cheap, which appeals to people who want some lolsogeekyXD merchandise without having to spend a lot of money on it. It's harder for a normalfag to rationalize spending $50 on a well-designed figure that they might be embarrassed to own, but $10? Less of a big deal.

Second, as >>14671214 pointed out, they're frequently the only way to get a figure of some characters. The obscure, one-off characters that it doesn't make sense to make action figures/figmas/nendos of, because demand isn't going to be high enough to justify making expensive figures. In contrast, because Funkos are dirt cheap, as mentioned above, it doesn't take much to justify making a figure of Random One-Off Character #72. The people who want it will get it, and if it doesn't sell well, the much more popular Funkos will cover the loss.

And third, there's the collector's market. Just like anything else that can be collected, there will be whales that gotta have them all, speculators who buy limited editions to jack up the price later, and so on. It's dumb, sure, but people collect all kinds of dumb shit, so it's no different.

normalfags will be normalfags. There's nothing to be done about it. Just enjoy the good figures and let them devour their plastic garbage.

Don't buy plastic shit made for over emotional mentally ill (that is, hyped) freaks.

And make as many normalfags stop buying it all.

As for games themselves, pirate everything.

All products can be well made and have some genuine interest growing, but mostly (and currently, probably all of them) are created from the start to be forced into fads as quickly and artificially as possible. Never fall for the forced fad machine and their marketing.

It's just soulless template shit, for the most part. And at least for me, pretty much nothing I enjoy is going to be popular enough to get one (and even it did, I wouldn't get one). For the most part though those are made to cater to normalfags with normalfag/entry level tastes in shit in the first place, because that's obviously where the profit is going to be.

>>14671391

To be honest, I'm not sure that many do. It seems like every store that stocks them, at least where I am, has some huge rack of them that always seems full, and I rarely ever see anyone sifting through them. Best I can think is that it's pushed hard because the west hasn't really had a native nendo/figma style market (with outright action figures being a kids thing, assuming they're still around; I haven't checked), and unfortunately these shitty things are cheap enough to make that the company wants them to get real popular.

For those that do buy them, I suppose it's simply done to signal to others what they like. At least funko shit isn't exactly portable though so it should just stay in houses collecting dust, but it wouldn't shock me if some enterprising pleb has crammed a bunch into the passenger seat window of his car.

With their big square box with flat top and bottom plus the large view window stores and collectors can just stack them on top of one another.
