Speaking as somebody who has traditionally played girly characters in third person games over the years, I think that excuse is bullshit because very little time is spent actually looking at your own character most of the time. If you do, your character is too big and it's time to switch to one you can see past.

For me, it's always been more a matter of screen real estate. Skinnier characters block less of my view in third person games, and girly characters are basically always skinnier. Not every game has character design as retarded as World of Warcraft, but for the most part, male characters tend to take up more screen space. Games with a character creator that allows you to make a convincing ectomorph usually make the issue entirely a matter of preference, but then half the time they sabotage themselves with stuff like race or sex-locked classes.

My rule of thumb is that if the male characters look like Venom, I play a girl, but if the male characters look like Spider-Man, time to be a man.
