0afecc No.14666489

Obsolete games/features that will never be produced again.

>Fixed camera forklift controls

Original RE and Parasite Eve 1 and 2. There's no real reason to want these other than the fixed camera setting a certain atmosphere and the painstaking rendering of each scene and how they tried their best to make 3D assets blend in. I believe Onimusha 3 was the last one ever made.

>Tank controls Lara Croft

Obviously third person controls have been vastly improved since original TR but its still a lot of fun mastering that control scheme as opposed to modern day Uncharted or Ass Creed where they automatically cling to ledges and you hold forward to scale an entire building.

I think TR: Angel of Darkness struck the perfect balance between redundant tank controls and modern babby controls.

>Point n click adventures

I guess there's Syberia 3 but aside from occasional hipster shit and (((Double Fine))) re-releases the genre is dead in the water.

>There's no real reason to want these

Fixed camera creates better horror scenarios since it has you unprepared for what is in the next corner so you have to adapt quickly. Forklift controlers make it much harder and frustrating to move, adding to the horror or the overal difficult. Check Vampire Hunter D on PSX. Also, yes, I miss Onimusha.

>Point n click adventures

Never ever. I lost count of how many times I played shit like Fullthrottle, Toonstruck and Grim Fandango.

Do they even do that for when you're driving a tank anymore these days?

>turning while driving in reverse

Good games would honor the correct way cars turn while backing up (steering left means the back of the car goes left). I've seen a few games where they get it backwards.

>tank controls

>parasite eve 1

PE had no tank controls and it's fucking horrible. Every time you walk out of a room you have to readjust the joystick as fast as possible before Aya decides to walk into the previous room because the camera just happens to be pointing the right way. Same deal with Devil May Cry, except the camera angles didn't have to be static since the whole game is rendered real-time.

If you have pre-rendered backgrounds, either use tank controls or only use those backgrounds for non-combat segments.

Resident Evil 4 and God Hand were the final evolution of tank controls, since the camera is always in the same relative position and it's painfully obvious which direction you'll be going when you press forward. Any game with a "fix camera" button has inherently flawed camera AND movement controls.

Depends if you mean tank or forklift. Forklift controls were nice for fixed camera games. Tank controls (original TR) are primitive and shit but I think we've gone way too far away from them in modern games.

You used to have to hold X to grab a ledge and hold it to stay clung on, release and hold again to grab a lower ledge etc.

Its not like those things made a game awesome but it was at least engaging to climb a building or a cliff face and it raised the tension rather than the modern solution - hold analog forward to auto climb.

the puzzles aren't mind breaking, most of the trouble i had was because i didn't know you could use space bar to higlight every object you can interact with on screen

the humor is top notch thoigh, and the MC is an asshole

>you drive your ex insane

>you brainwash a cyborg qt and control her personality with a remote control

>you turn baby dolphins into cat food

>you sell a niggress for 5 coins to a kike that has her dance like a monkey with a fez

>you abuse the mentally handicaped

>you steal from hobos

>you leave young children in the care of a creepy pedo in a windowless ban

>you later put said children to sleep in the mouth of a man eating sweer mutant

at one point in this game i was solving puzzles by thinking, "what could possibly be the most harmfull and irresponsible thing to do now?"

i'm currently playing the fourht one, it seems a little bit to easy for now, but maybe that just becos i'm barelly at the start

ruining the timeline with profesor hipster's time machine sound like fun, and Ruffus somehow has all his memoryes of the trilogy wich now presumably belong to an erased timeline

>aside from flushing the ending of 3 down the toilet

Pretty much this and everything that follows. Deponia was first envisioned as a single game, but it was too big to be done as so so it was released in 3 parts, the last one being the definitive ending of the whole thing, as Jan "Poki" Muller-Michaelis, the guy behind Deponia and Edna and Harvey envisioned.

>which i don't mind since sad endings are shit anyways

Here's the thing, dipshit. You're the reason why Doomsday is shit. The ending wasn't sad, it was ironic, ironic to the point that is fucking hilarious. Yes, Rufus dies at the end, but after doing only selfish thing he did in his whole life, saving not only Deponia, but Elysium and most people he met. Also, he died a hero, as he always wanted to be, and yet, even at the doorsteps, he didn't changed one bit, and he died laughing at the missfortune of others.

No one, including you, understood this, and the constant bitching of fans because the ending was sad got to Daedelic to release a sequel and they forced Poki to do it. He wasn't happy with that, so he purposedly ruined the whole thing just to show that the past ending was simply better than what you will get in Doomsday, because Doomsday was done to be shit on purpose.

>I was afraid he would have matured or become more responsible after 3

Nah, as much as I hate Doomsday, the humor is alright, as I posted, although it takes a really shitty dive around the end.

13b9af No.14667245

>>14667155

>his self sacrifice showed him caring for someone other than himself for the very first time in his entire life

And that costed him absolutely everything he had and went trhough for, since he decided to change just for one moment. And the thing is, he died an asshole, but the point is, he died, that's end for his story, and it was great.

>him stoping being an asshole right at the end did

He didn't. He did it for Goal and only for Goal, since it was the only way for her to survive, he was in a real fucking dilemma there, he didn't even changed, as showed when he just laughs as he falls

Rufus just wasn't a person that was going to have a happy ending, not even Kratos didPeople usually get mad because Goal ends with Cletus, when it was pretty obvious she was aware of the fact that that wasn't Rufus.

Thief-style: you can hear through a door what kind of echo is there, by the reverb, you can tell if it's a stone corridor, stone corridor with quards, stone hall, stone hall with guards, etc. Once you get good at that game you can map out even more shit, just by listening.

This shit will never be seen again. Unless VR somehow becomes good.

Different games communicating with each other, sometimes between different consoles or across generations. (To clarify, I don't mean game X on console X playing with game X on PC, but game X communicating with game Y, sometimes between console X and console Y.)

What I'm thinking of was really more of a Pokemon thing, but it was neat that the handheld games could communicate with more games than just the respective related games within its generation. For example, trading between Stadium and the GB games, Colosseum and GBA games, GB and GBC games, GBA to DS (one-way), and so on. Getting a Manaphy egg in gen4 from Ranger was also neat, but I hated relying on that to complete the dex. (It's better than other event mons in that it's more easily obtainable, but it's still tedious.)

Implementation wasn't always the best (such as being required for Manaphy, which you might not even know without looking it up online) but it was still a cool concept. Gen4 didn't really have the best spin-off games to connect to which meant I didn't do this much since gen3, but I was still sad to not see this done with gen5. (The same thing applies to gen6+, but I hated them too much to really care anymore by then.)

Pokémon probably did this more than almost any other game franchise (assuming other games did this to begin with), but did any other game communicate between other games in its series like this?

I'm still butthurt that I couldn't trade my pokemon from Gen 2, which I had already traded from Gen 1, over to Gen 3. But it's okay, just buy the Gen 1 games again, goy! Then you can get the 150 all over again! And if you want the next 100, just get a Gamecube, several different gamecube games, including some limited editions, and a gamecube to GBA link cable!

I like this type of thing when it's on a smaller, more manageable scale. Like you could connect Jak X on PS2 to Daxter on PSP with a USB cable and unlock the ability to play as Daxter alone, plus play as the bad guy from Daxter, IIRC. Even that's a bit gay that stuff was locked behind buying extra stuff though.

My favorite example is probably on the PS2 Ratchet & Clank games. In 2 and 3 you get discounts on weapons from previous games if you have saves from the previous games with those weapons on them. They even acknowledge it in the story. In the first game, you save the HQ of the company that makes the weapons, so the president makes you an employee, but mentions that the employee discount takes two years to kick in. In the third game, two years later, you actually do get that employee discount, so long as you have the save from the first game and are past that point in the first game. You'd almost think they actually had it all planned out from the start.

And related to both the games I just mentioned, in Ratchet: Deadlocked, if you have Jak X save data on your memory card, you unlock Jak as a playable skin, and in Jak X, if you have Deadlocked save data on your memory card, you unlock Ratchet as a playable character. All the characters in Jak X also have character profiles, only written in Precursor language, but if you translate it you can get bits of info about Ratchet that you don't get in his own games, like his actual age (at least at the point of Deadlocked).

You've got the Ratchet stuff confused a bit. The employee discount you get in 1 only applies in 3. Not enough time had passed from the release of 1 to 2 for the discount to activate, and the main vendors weren't Gadgetron anyway. The individual weapons is something separate from the employee discount. It's not a discount for those weapons either, you just get them for free. In 2, you'll get the weapons you had on your 1 save at the Gadgetron sales place in the game when you get to it. In 3 you'll get your R&C2 weapons for free from Slim Cognito.

>each world has another secret temple level that is pretty difficult (I lost about 30 lives on average, trying to get all the goodies in them), which is only unlocked if you get all the KONG letters in each stage

BUT THEN

>can do time trials for each level, with bronze, silver, gold rankings and an online leaderboard

>can also get a shiny time by not taking damage

>all the random enemies and platforms in each level are actually placed perfectly for speedrunning

>if you can unlock everything you can get hard mode which removes checkpoints(?)

>beating hard mode unlocks mirror levels

Lots of stuff to offer from the game, depending on what sort of player you are. If you're a shit and just want to beat the game, you can. If you want to unlock everything, you can do that too. If you're a speedrunner or a masochist, it's got your covered too.

>I'm still butthurt that I couldn't trade my pokemon from Gen 2 over to Gen 3

GameFreak changed a lot of technical stuff with IVs, stats, and other saved Pokemon info that would have been difficult to make gen3 backwards compatible. (Remember, the games went from 8-bit to 16-bit so this meant gen3 was able to save more data per Pokemon due to better hardware.) The short version is, if you could somehow trade a Pokemon from Ruby to Silver and back, you wouldn't have the same Pokemon you started with.

If GF somehow added the ability for the games to communicate, it would either have to be a one-way transfer from 1/2 -> 3, or a huge warning about your Pokemon losing/changing abilities on trade back, changing stats, etc.

>MFW people shit on tank controls

In RE they're perfect because when the camera angle shifts the controls aren't suddenly fucked.

Anyone ever play the PS2 Yakuza games, they employ the same camera at points but when ever it changes unless you already know what the new angle is your character eventually stumbles from the sudden change in direction corresponding to where the camera now is.

Only time I've actually seen non tank controls with a changing camera is DMC4 where your direction on the analog is locked even after a camera change but a slight nudge will still have the little stumble.

Silent Hill 2 and 3 also had the option to have non tank controls, or "2D controls", as they called it, and I think they also did the thing where the direction on the analog stays locked after a camera change. It's a simple fix that goes way back, but tank controls are still alright

>But now you can transfer pokemon from Gen I to damn 3DS games.

Except you can only transfer gen1/2 saves from the 3DS VC. You can technically do that with original saves if you know how to backup and transfer them to a 3DS, but you can't do that without 3rd party devices.

>Gen II also has plenty of stuff not in Gen I, so they just place limitations on what you can do when you connect the games

Gen II did change up stats, but they couldn't change too much in order to retain compatibility when trading.

>there were some minor things that could end up different if you changed them back, IIRC, but it's worth it

The issue is that the changes to Pokemon data and stats in gen3 weren't minor. This includes new values to track shininess, gender, etc. instead of just IVs, or using new IVs with higher limits due to moving from 8-bit to 16-bit.

https://bulbapedia.bulbagarden.net/wiki/Generation_III#Major_alterations_from_Generation_II

Yes, trading between gen1/2 has some minor setbacks or issues, but gen2 wasn't designed to be too different on a technical level. Gen3 was a fresh start, in a sense, so having a 16-bit game bound to 8-bit limitations didn't make sense. Backwards compatibility can be a nightmare for users and developers, so it was easier for them to just make new games (FireRed/LeafGreen) to catch the missing Kanto/Johto Pokemon with the new stats and data format. Obviously they could have just included the missing Pokemon in Hoenn to begin with, but remember, each region being its own game just means more money for Nintendo.

This probably the most dumbass reason for static camera. No, it doesn't set the atmosphere, the music and the looks does. Theres a lot of horror genre that uses fist person view, top down view, sidescroller, etc. Fixed camera angle is just an obsolete design because of hardware limitation, they couldn't render a fully 3D environment so they use a camera trick to make it look like you are exploring in a 3D space but the background is just a 2D images
