I was wondering if there are any 4x style games with combat that you can actually control. Endless Space 2 (never played 1) has a fantastic 4x side but the combat is dissapointing although pretty enough. SoaSE has an okay combat aspect but the 4x side is very superficial. Main campaign is like x-com, fly around the 12 colonies and prevent them from dropping out of the alliance, build fleets, and so on. It's fairly barebones at this level but it works for what they're trying to do. No Cylon campaign yet so that's a bummer
Battles are where it shines though since it's all simultaneous turn based. Ships have a limited Z axis, with armor ratings for top and bottom as well as limited firing arcs. Pretty good variety of ordinance to use from guided missiles, to chaff missiles. Ships have subsystems which can be damaged and effects various things like movement, turn rates, firing rates, defense
Pirate it, it's fairly decent, hopefully the devs make more space games

I tried engaging those Hegemony forces, by the way. Managed to pick off one of the fleets separately with zero losses. Then a single fucking frigate intercepts me to ask me to turn on my transponder, resulting in an insane bloodbath. Onslaught AI is shit (charging straght into a cloud of hostiles) and real level 20 captains are much tougher to beat than the simulators. When I started to lose capitals, the replacements without officers would just get overwhelmed. Ultimately I lost every single ship in the retreat, even my Afflictor, the ISS Laserhawk, who was with me for almost the whole campaign. I gave them a good run for their money, even took out a XIV Battlegroup Onslaught. Good way to go.

But there are almost no roleplay options in Elite Dangerous. What actions have lasting consequences in that game? The only one I can think of is dying without insurance. The slow reputation build with local factions is usually rendered moot when you move elsewhere, and has little impact. The slow reputation build with major factions deteriorates and is specifically engineered to be a grind fest. Your character has no character, and doesn't meaningfully interact with other characters/ships/the world. I think you might have meant to call it immersive, which it does very well.

that's not an argument, still, dont get to mad at it, star wars is a good sci-fi story but not a good sci-fi universe, it has the fiction but there is just not enough science in it, even the x-wing has design flags, since the blasters are not centered it's dificult to shot sometimes at small targets like fighters, you can experience this in games like X-Wing vs. Tie Fighter, but this is like arguing about ondor tax policy, the author just doesnt care about these details and it's not part of the main focus of the story.

Does this dense motherfucker not realize that we Tolkien didn't need to devote time to every little minutia of the world? Could you imagine the LOTR trilogy took time to answer question like these, the cohesion and narrative would be broken to explain something not important to the story and should be in say, I don't, the Silmarillion, or the History of Middle Earth books.

Tolkien also went far more into detail than he probably needed to even in LotR proper, but it was largely about things that would be fucking interesting to him. About the only thing that he should have done is explain why people freak out about the elves and how much shit they got into in LotR instead of just the Silmarillion. That is also an incredibly silly complaint for a book series that is already fucking huge, and ignored normal story conventions to include the stuff with the Shire getting enslaved. It didn't need to veer back to Gondor just to check in on Aragon when the proper main characters, the hobbits, were finishing up the last bit of their adventure on their own.

Sorry i went off into a tangent while writing this.
The point i was originally trying to make is that Kamea is reliant on her allies to do shit for her.
One Lady basically funds her (and by proxy our) war, her friend got the camera recordings out and with it got her and her entire war effort out of hot water, the muslim lady she sent to work on the LosTech ship is the one who gets it int oworking condition and finds in its archives a star map that leads us to what i like to call, planet loot box.
And of course your own efforts are vital for her war effort and she herself recognizes all of this by the end of the game.

Based on what i hear from folks with lore knowledge on the battletech universe, in source books set only twenty years after the happenings of this game, the Aurigan coalition or Directorate are neither mentioned, meaning that the whole thing ended up canonically falling into an anarchistic dumpster fire so fucked up and minor as a state that ComStar cartographers dont consider the region to even be a state at that point.
c5f201 No.14740835
>>14740670
Oh yeah and to add to Kameas idiocy, she hands out two mechs full of LosTech to our main guy as well as a space ship that itself is LosTech.
Which is either because she is an over-rewarding idiot or because she knows that ComStar really hates it when other people have shiny LosTech shit that by all right should be owned by their space telephone company church.
And about that ship, it is described as some sorta dropship even though it is unable to make planetfall or re-enterfrom said planet (getting it off of that one moon it had crashed on was a big enough job already).
What i would rather call it is a luxury liner/pleasure cruiser.
Here's why.
>It has when fully upgraded the following facilities
>Extensive automated mech repair facilities
>Room for about 3X6 battlemechs
>Room for more than enough pilots of said mechs
>Medical facilities for more than hallf the crew at a time
Now, so far this sounds like a military transport, right?
But then it gets silly.
>Extensive R&R facilities which include
>Lounge
>Improved lounge
>Library
>Improved library
>Low G pool
>Gymnasium
>Arcade
>Hydrophonics
And that's as much as i remember.
So, what i think this ship used to be before the star league fell, was some sorta luxury liner owned by a single billionaire, or a pleasure liner owned by space viking line, taking space Finns to space Estonia to buy cheap liqeur.

The reason it isn't mentioned anywhere is because the place was invented for the game.
The area its set in, between the MoC and the Taurian Concordat would latter become known as the Fronc Reaches when it colonised again by a combined MoC and TC operation during the FedCom civil war.
At the time of the game, some 40 years before the fronc reaches, its so far out in the sticks it doesn't even have a name on the Explorer Corps maps.

Dropships too big to actually be able to land on planets are actually part of the lore.
http://www.sarna.net/wiki/Behemoth_(DropShip_class)
Like the behemoth, the Argo also takes up 2 docking points on a jumpship and is supposed to be of a similar size. The silliest part of the ship is that its supposed to have a docking collar for parking other dropships on it, while its attached to a jumpship.
Its also not supposed to be a military ship. The main reason they didn't build more of them, as it was built just as the revolts in the periphery where winding up, setting off the biggest war fought in the innersphere for hundreds of years.
It was supposed to be a kind of mobile mothership for setting up colonies. All the fancy R&R and mechbays are to keep the the machines being used running and giving the workers a place to relax.
The most insane thing about it, other than it being the only one of its kind, is trying to use it as a military commandpost for a small time mercenary company.
No real reason to make something like this up though, could have just given the player a run down overlord and the result would have been much the same.

It's amazing how bad the writing is. She is a Canopian puppet by the end of the game when you pause to consider. Honestly, its hilarious because its a great move by the Magistracy in universe. The Aurigan Reach is between the Capellans, Davions and Taurians due to its position. By funding a rebellion:
>a regional threat is weakened to the point of being no threat
>its relations with your enemies are soured so no chance of them allying against you
>you have a easily manipulated puppet who's dependent on your funding installed on the throne
>the Reach is now either a speed bump or distraction should any other power move against the Magistracy.

I have an idea.
Instead of the boring standard scifi setting where humanity set up a large empire across the stars and then a revolution stars to spread among the colonies, how about a revolution that spreads from earth itself.
The original terran government has to go into exile and must now attemtp to reconquer the solar system, while simultaneously resisting the urge to drop nukes on all the importanr historical sites.
The rebels of course are scum and don't feel bad about using biological, chemican and nuclear weapons against the much less industrialized colonies.
I feel like you could put a nice spin on some used up settings this way.

Once you get a hang of it yes. Invest in boarding enemy ships, firing on the ship you are boarding can demoralize and kill enemy soldiers. Selling captured ships can rake in big money and can be cheaper than buying a new ship. Depending on your alignment boarding is the only way to obtain some ships such as those from "outlaw" worlds. If you plan on smuggling illegal cargo invest in a cloak and stay hidden the moment you spot security ships or when docking.

That's kind of convoluted.
The problem is that Ender's Game was originally written as a lead in to a story about a guy traveling around earths colonies in the far future spreading the word of god and learning to communicate with aliens that are so different from humans they end up killing us by accident.
First example of that kind of aliens was the buggers, but the rest of the series has more of that kind of misunderstandings.
Enders Game was so successful the writer began writing other spinoff stories based on it, mostly following Bean if my memory serves.
So which series do you want to read?

If you aren't afraid of old school RTS gaming, there's Conquest: The Frontier Wars.
Its kind of an early blueprint for SoaSE with maps connected by jumpnodes as part of a bigger map, with your buildings stuck around the planets, carriers that launch autonomous fighters and a few ideas that still haven't made it into more games despite how well they worked (admirals who can handle some of the micromanagement of the ships for you, supply lines and supply ships to keep your warships from running out of ammo).
Its a really great game that was far ahead of its time when it came out, 17 years ago…

I'm horribly addicted to the simulator, and can't stop blowing things up with the Hyperion. Turns out enemy shield AI doesn't know that you can teleport strike, so the ISS Gwydion here (now the "Cherenkov") can wear down a Paragon. I love how she can just barely manage to get a teleport and fire all 4 antimatter blasters. Getting rid of the torpedoes was well worth it.

The missile autoforge isn't as cool as I thought it would be; it seems to be a one-time refill of all missiles. Part of the reason I recommend the Scy Nation mod is the "high end seller" at "Prism Freeport", where you have better odds of rare stuff being available, albeit with a 200% tariff smacked on top of the price. I've just started playing KotOR 2 for the first time, but I've hit a problem trying to go to the surface of Telos.
The game crashes either at the end of the loading screen after the crash-landing video, or right as Bao-Dur starts talking. I've tried twelve times and only twice did I get further than that, of which one only made it a few second further. The other got as far as [Bao-Dur has joined your party] and crashed. I tried disabling shadows and frame buffer effects since I've seen that recommended to increase stability, but the only difference it made was that instead of crashing entirely, it jumped back to the main menu as soon as the loading screen finished.
The only mod I'm using is TSLRCM.

And for those who are wondering what different DLC adds, here's a cuick rundown on what is in them and how usefull they are.
>Apocalypse
Adds above seen doomsday weapons that can either blow up a planet, scorch its inhabitants, convert them to your citizens or create a slave shield around the planet.
It's ok in my books.
>Utopia
Adds megastructures that you can build yourself, shit like habitats, galactic sensor array, dyson sphere (a giant battery basically), science nexus and ring worlds (each comes with four 20 space Gaia worlds).
Not necessary, but not terrible either.
>Synthetic dawn
Adds a new end game disaster that can happen, the contingency, which are a bunch of robots that want to kill all squishies. Also adds playable robots.
Pick if you want to play as Necrons.
>Leviathans
Adds some rnadom encounters in space, stuff like specters (roaming giant energy monsters that kill shit when coming in contact with), crystalline entities (bigger than what you would find in base game), ethereal drake, guarding a star system with tons of metals, ancient dreadnought (A super ship you can kill and then either rebuild and add to your fleet or use the scraps for research), dimensional horrors.
Not really necessary one, only pick if you want to see more shit while exploring space.
>Humanoids pack
Adds some new portraits (such as space dwarfs and space elves) as well as a new hull type, humanoid type (which looks cool but then again there are mods out there to change your hull type anyways).
Visual stuff/10
>Plantoids pack
The humanoids pack before it was cool, adds plant aliens and their own ships.
Visual stuff 2: the revengeance of the son of the previous pack/10

>War weariness is now a gameplay mechanic, your people get tiredof war over time and if you can tire your enemy faster you can force them to your demands, unless they are a fallen empire or fanatical burgers purgers, also you dont need to worry about war weariness if you play as a purger, squishy or mechanical.
>Star bases are now a per star system thing instead of per planet ones, also got buffed and can be specialized with shit like shipyards, anchorages, trade docks and other shit
That's as much as i remember.
Now i gotta go, my bed needs me. Or the other way around, i cant remember which.

However please note that since the mod will search audio with "french" on it. you will have to rename some audio file that mean:

3, Ice meteors are a thing now, they are blue, have a different flavor text and so far thats it.
4, Discovered anomalies get sent to a list so managing them is going to be a bit easier than before.
5, Fleets cant move to unexplored systems now before a sci ship has gone and poked its nose inside the system.
Gonna post more info with more pics.

6, Brown dwarfs are tiny compared to other stellar objects yet count as stars.
Also on a sidenote, it seems like i cant build more stations around the other stars within the system. Wondering how multiple starsare going to work when i start getting megastructures.
7, Apparently we can now jump without nump lanes with scouts, apparently. Or at least once we get the right science researched.
And that's so far all ive got.
Opinions so far?

The fuck? Wouldn't a ship, simply by virtue of entering a system, render it explored?

Luckily all the sci ship needs to do is just fly into system and then the navy can fly in.
Navy is too scared of the unknown to bother flying into an unexplored system.

Few things i ran into in this game.
Fanatic purifier orcs, raider space elves, fallen empire dwarves and i also discovered that a fanatic purifier can bomb a planet into tomb world status.

Hunted down a large frigate in-atmo on a snow planet. Unfortunately it had no loot.
First capital ship prepared for her maiden voyage. I did what I could with a flying brick. It's made of top-notch combat armour, my reward for all the time spent salvaging hostile bases.

I don't mind all this DLC and stuff but is Stellaris worth playing if I'm looking for a space game? How does it compare to the likes of Sins?

Your ship is just a box. That brought me a good laugh anon. I want to know, does it have a boarding pod?

It's unarmed for now (disgusting, I know). The goal is to get the resources I need to add offensive capabilities. The only weaponry is carried on the combat shuttle (4x15mm miniguns and 1xspinal railgun)
>does it have a boarding pod?
It will soon.
Interior is one long rectangular room which has a landing area and all sorts of shit stuffed in the back. The windows have been doubled up for safety purposes. See the warp drive on the ceiling? It emits lethal levels of radiation, but it just barely doesn't reach the floor because computer-game, rendering the floor beneath "safe" (just don't jump). There is no bed, nor bathroom, nor shower, but we do have a small hydroponics bay growing corn behind the gravity generator.

Sins is prettier, easier to get into and far less text.
If you like to roleplay as an emperor of your onw space empire then this game works pretty well for that purpose.

Neat, Though it will be better once you won't have to duck to avoid getting brain cancer and when you add more things. I'm looking forward to your improvements.
