A guy I know is selling a Dreamcast, said I could test it before buying but he's no liar and told me the CD drive "runs like butter" and it comes with one controller, one of them fancy memory cards with a screen on ot, and no video cable.
But I know I can buy a cable elsewhere.
When I was a kid I was all about Sony and Nintendo, only recently got my first Genesis and collecting for it has been fun. I think I wanna collect for Sega consoles because there are countless games I haven't played on them.
I understad pirating games for the Dreamcast is damn easy, too.
Sooooo, should I buy it?
Considering I don't have an old TV, can it be modded or adapted with relative ease to HDMI?
Should one buy a second controller, or an adaptor instead?
I guess it can run emulators of other consoles too. How's that scene? Also, how's the homebrew scene?

That depends. Do you like video games? I mean, more precisely, do you like fun video games?
>Considering I don't have an old TV, can it be modded or adapted with relative ease to HDMI?
Buy an old TV too, faggot. You wanna play retro games, you should own a CRT. The ideal Dreamcast experience is CRT and S-Video (as some games are not compatible with the VGA mode). There is an HDMI adapter, but it costs a pretty penny.
>Should one buy a second controller, or an adaptor instead?
I know there's an adapter for Playstation controllers, but I find the Dreamcast's controller pretty comfy so I prefer that.
>I guess it can run emulators of other consoles too. How's that scene? Also, how's the homebrew scene?
Well, there's only so much you can do with that old hardware. Last time I checked, it emulates Genesis and Neo Geo CD pretty well, but struggles with the SNES. (Even the PS2 can't emulate SNES at perfect full speed, although a Gamecube does) Other than that, there are some nice homebrew games. Gunlord, Sturmwind, and Rush Rush Rally are awesome.

I'd like to, but that's something I'll have to do later. I didn't wanna make the post too long, and the fact is I do have an old CRT but it's too shitty. Like, seriously it's embarrassing. It's kinda OK for consoles that did 2D only, but the Dreamcast deserves better. When I do invest on one, I wanna buy a good one.
Also, you know collectors of old consoles need a nice TV from the past, I know collectors of old consoles need a nice TV from the past, but how would you explain that to a wife who's not into games?
I had a hard time convincing my wife of buying the nice flat TV we do have, as she figured all TV sets are the same if they are the same size. She's that kind of person.
Also, I keep my shitty old TV in my office where it bothers no one, and it would make no sense to bring here a big, old TV considering we'll be moving to a bigger place in about a month. After we move then I'll probably consider getting a TV.
I'm about to mancave it up! I think!
I hope…

not the one in your picture. xbr960/970s are 16:9 CRTs with a lot of image processing and only output in 1080i, meaning they upscale 240p, 480i, 480p and 720p sources to 1080i, generating perceptible input lag and a blurry image. You want a standard definition model, the fv310 or other silver flat screen trinitrons (FD trinitron badge/wega) are considered the best for old games and the lack of processing. Also look for similar Panasonic Tau, JVC I'Art or Toshiba Theaterview SD TVs, curved usually means better geometry. None of these TVs will accept a Dreamcast VGA/480p signal but will take an SD signal and make it look great. You want to avoid widescreen models as they have digital processing. Check places like craigslist, curbs, facebook market, letgo app, and other local selling services and don't pay more than $25 for a set, people mostly want to get rid of them for free.
These aren't the best CRTs to get, but are definitely the most commonly available options, those are the brands you want to keep an eye out for (sony, jvc, toshiba and panasonic) Other noteworthy brands in the consumer space are mitsubishi and NEC but their TVs with options like component/svideo aren't as common. There is also the professional monitor scene but these are very expensive and hard to get into unless you have numerous resources.

The only thing you are missing out on is the VMU which most third party developers completely ignored in the first place and wasn't vital for anything. Its not even like older systems where you have an argument for sound being off since most if not all games at this point completely abandoned midi-like soundtracks for prerecorded audio.
Dreamcast was great because of the innovative attitude it represented and the off the wall shit that was launched for it. You don't need the old hardware to play the games it was great for.

I'm mad because of this:
>>14669016
>an objectively better experience

Nigger, there's an EMOTIONAL component to gaming!
THAT'S a huge part of the EXPERIENCE!
When I play Mario Kart on the tablet part of the Switch, that's OBJECTIVELY in a lower resulution than when I play the same game on my TV; but when I play with my sister there's a whole new component to the experience and that has nothing to do with things you can meassure.
I like, to this day, play with my old Super Nintendo system. Fun games and all, but dude, I like to play with my Super Nintendo system. I have a different experience than if I play the same game knowing it's someone else's Super Nintendo.
Are there objective factors? Sure. You can count FPS and some numbers are, of course, objectively bigger than others. No debate there.
But that's only part of the experience, which is different from person to fucking person!
Hey, maybe some people like the original hardware for reasons that are merely emotional. So what?
Are you gonna argue with how they themselves live their own experience and you're gonna show them graphs and numbers proving they're not having as much fun as they think they are?
You can show me a dog that is an exact clone of mine, looks the same, even has the same memories and emotional reactions, but it's way smarter and more obedient. I still choose the dog I already have over the clone! Why?

I regret buying mine. I don't know, Dreamcasts don't seem to be very durable. I bought one and it only lasted a few months. Replaced the lid switch with a button, didn't work (but I know that solved the issue with the lid), tried to calibrate the laser again (second time), didn't work, replaced the laser, didn't work. Now it's just sitting there, wasting space, for years now, and I haven't tried anything else because I don't care anymore, but I don't want to throw it away either. Considering the amount of shit on the internet about fixing Dreamcasts, it's safe to say that it's not a very well made system.
My PS2 (and even my PS1) that I bought new has been running nonstop since then and it works perfectly. From what I see, Dreamcasts in particular seem to have lots of issues. Early CD consoles just seem to be a bad thing to own most of the time. It's like buying a CDi, a 3DO, a Saturn, the Mega CD, or the Jaguar CD. There is a lot more to break there than in a system that uses cartridges, and they still hadn't quite figured out how to make them last. Good look finding one that works perfectly, and even if you find one, it probably won't stay that way for a very long time. It's especially bad if you buy something rare, of course. The Dreamcast isn't all that rare, but maybe it will be, since many people seem to own multiple systems, because they just don't work.
I don't think I can recommend it, even though the emulators seem to be complete shit, and will probably never be good. Maybe if you can replace the drive with USB, but that is expensive as shit. There are like, two people on the planet that actually make this part.
If you don't want to take this risk, you will have to live without this one. I don't intend to buy another one. Just seems like a really bad idea to me, since I already regret buying one. At this point I just hope that Sega makes some new Dreamcasts and Saturns, since the emulation will never go anywhere.
>>14694127
The Dreamcast generally has the best versions. Easily the best arcade ports.
>>14695309
It can, but most games don't work. VGA has much better compatibility, and there are modified images out there that allow you to run some games that aren't otherwise compatible. I never bothered with that, just used composite (and it looked good because my CRT has a very nice screen). I use component on my other consoles if I can, though. S-video is possibly the best choice overall, since I believe it doesn't require the box, but my TV doesn't have that.

Did you miss the part about it not working no matter what? Not a big deal, it was only the entire post. Dreamcast games are great, but the consoles are really not built to last. In my case, I couldn't fix it at all. I removed the lid switch and soldered a button to the board as a replacement, and it did solve that issue because it made the CDs actually spin, but the games still didn't work. Replacing the laser didn't make it read anything either, so I just gave up.
Most people aren't willing to do even half of what I did, so how could I tell OP to buy one? That would be some horrible advice. If he buys one, it will break soon unless it's modded to run games through USB (and that isn't easy or cheap to get).
>>14704039
>The best games for it have been ported to many consoles
You are talking about the few exclusive games that everyone knows, generally made by Sega, and Sega is willing to port their own games. The Dreamcast has a shitload of great games that will never be ported to anything else.
>HD versions
You must mean (((HD versions))). Playing the original versions on a CRT, maybe with VGA if you have a CRT monitor, is the correct way of playing them.
>awful controller
I would definitely agree with that, but I got used to it, and it didn't bother me after that. Not nearly as good as the Saturn controllers, though. Not that it's good, of course. Thankfully, I have an adapter so I can use my stick, at least for arcade games. Not that it matters, since the console itself doesn't work because you know how they are. The fact that they break too often and too easily is the only reason to not own one.
