There is no way a 80's themed or any thematic Battle Royale as the pitch would work, hipsters don't play videogame and Battle Royale is not about "theme", but gameplay and all gameplay ideas of this game are horrible, even if they worked out and came without bugs.

Also game should have random events, good and bad fro Runners (drops of gear, extra escape gates opening, some escape gates are closed, unleash the dogs etc). So it lures players with prospect of having lucky match that leads to easy win huge bonus. Players play more, gambling is fun and cancer that is proper for cancer game.

Stalkers should be alone on the stage. First this is how it was in the Running man. Second, balancing such highly asymmetrical game is already a challenge, balancing it with multiply stalkers would be FUBAR.

From the time it takes the first runner to reach it, you have 30 seconds to get back there before it opens otherwise any runner that reaches it can just waltz through and skip the boss fight (where the environment is SPECIFICALLY tailored to you- by killing runners you unlock stuff to customize your arena), so make sure to get back in time for some good ol' killin. Note: It is possible, but very difficult, to escape a stalker arena without killing them.
You could have an unlocked ceiling up to 100 or 150 runners per game, which wouldn't be so bad on the processor and netcode if the graphics are simpler and you DONT USE CRY ENGINE FOR THE LAST TIME COME ON. Also note: If more players can play stalkers than the current tower allows (usually 4, but maybe 5), then 4 or 5 players will be randomly selected to play stalker- any player with a valid stalker will not be punished for playing and dying that round (since they weren't a stalker). Moar note: In designing your arena, you choose valid ways YOU can bonus score (like subzero scoring a goal in the clip) and a legitimate way for runners to escape without killing you (like hitting a particular button. You will have to run your arena before publishing to prove it can be done) Last note: Always remember the environment is always the deadliest- to players, for stalkers, and to stalkers.

Games that were not originally f2p but decide to go f2p (especially early on) are damn right telling signs that the game should not be touched by anyone with more than half a brain.
I can't name a single game that went f2p as a desperate last ditch attempt to garner popularity and became appealing to play at all.
Also this Battle Royale meme has to die. The concept sounds fun but none of the games that mimic it can even execute it decently.

Once upon a time, Guild Wars 2 had a beta event called 'Hunger Royale' that was damn fun. But, in true arenanet fashion, they never brought it back I don't think.
How to do it well? Give it to competent developers and build it from the ground up to factor in things like hackers, player latencies, and don't make it p2w. Sadly, all of those things seem to beyond the capabilities of any studio these days, so we're destined to wade through shit.

I can't believe how many pieces of shit there are out there that will defend a game company for shitting out a multiplayer-only game that trusts the client. Why do they all trust the client? You can't secure a game like that. Rust is dealing with that issue constantly, and they tried to fix it with hacky shit like seeing if they teleported too far (and banning hundreds of regular players).

As for why devs do P2P instead of server-side stuff, it's a complex answer. It's more complex work code-wise, you have to spend more on server setup and continued maintenance, not all off the shelf engines offer that kind of functionality, and a bunch of other reasons.
The single best anti-cheap methods are a price tag in excess of $30, and permanent bans (forcing people to rebuy) for confirmed cheaters.
