Ransomware works by using a public-private key system or a symmetrical key. In the public-private key system, the ransomware has a public key (usually unique by download) and uses that to encode your files. You would only be able to decode it by getting the private key, which you have to buy from the ransomer.
In the symmetric system, the program generates a random password, uses that to encode your files, and then sends the password along with the ransom fingerprint to the ransomer; it never stores the password.
This program would be trivial to reverse-engineer and bypass entirely. It has to keep the key locally to do the decode (though it might make efforts to mung it in memory and decode it immediately before using it), so the entire leverage that ransomware has (that you don't have the means to decode the files yourself) is completely lost.

It hit so hard at once that some companies paid the ransom, decoded their database, and found only another ransomer's ransom note (so one ransomer hit it first, and the second had encoded only the first ransom).
So yes, it doesn't just hit faggots on the internet. Yes, it is the eating tidepods of viruses, because you have to be clueless and retarded to get hit by it. It's like eating tide pods, but instead of retarded little kids, it's retarded little companies.
