So I never owned a Wii U, and I just built a new PC that can emulate Wii U games. The problem is that this thing seems to have a worse library than the 32x. I already played through the undying disappointment that is Mario Kart 8 (WHO THE FUCK THOUGHT IT WOULD BE A GOOD IDEA TO TURN RAINBOW ROAD 64 INTO A 1 AND A HALF MINUTE CHECKPOINTS MAP?), and Smash 4 is underwhelming. No it's fucking not. N64 Rainbow Road is the comfiest track in the series, and it so happens to be the ONLY throwback cup map with checkpoints. It's supposed to be 6 minutes of chilin' the fuck out, but it blows it's load and ruins everything. The level designs were the worst part for me. Giant empty large pits you need to fludd hover over, all spaced apart so the game is excruciatingly slow, design that is basically "put the right shape in the right hole and don't try to rush things!" The only good parts of the game are when they take away the fludd pack and they ruin those sections by making them gimmick sections in the late game. It's so shit. It's unpleasant to look at (plastic is a good way you put it) and the music is all the same. Holy fuck imagine if every mario 64 level was green hills and no exception. That's what sunshine is stretched across its entire miserable experience. Fuck that game.

the wii is very convenient, I'm not a fan of emulation but it does solve a lot of common issues like high quality output that is affordable and convenient (component), support for 480p making it not intolerable on flat panels and native 240p for CRT users. It's very nice to have around, plus it had great homebrew support so you can use anything from the gamecube controller to the dualshock 4 if you want.

Tropical Freeze and XCX were my favorite Wii U games. The whole Wii U's existence was basically Nintendo first and second party limping it along, there's not much to choose from. I would play those two if you had to choose. XCX doesn't start getting really fun until you get your mechs though, it suffers really badly from JRPG syndrome where it takes 5 hours for the game to get good.

if you can find one on 5.5.1 they are honestly fantastic machines for Nintendo homebrew and piracy. you get native wii and gamecube support plus a shitload of virtual console titles. Homebrewing a wii u to install custom firmware and software takes a few hours at most, and you can install everything onto a portable HDD.
It supports a ton of controller, plus gamecube controllers if you can get one of the smash adapters

If you have any 8/16-lane PCIe slots, get a dGPU on eBay instead. It's not too hard to pay from $40-$80 for a AMD R7 260 or nVidia GTX 650, to $120-$150 for a AMD RX 560 or nVidia GTX 1050. Plus maybe some memory (8GB of DDR2 is about $20-$50).
I'm stuck with a similar system (was Core 2 Duo before I picked up a Core 2 Quad for $10) rocking a GTX 960, and it easily handles most older titles and any emulator short of Cemu/RPCS3.

As far as graphics cards go, it has to be PCI Express 2.0 and there's the matter of the power supply that's never been replaced and I wouldn't want a card to eat up too much power or need additional cooling without replacing it. PCIe is fully backward compatible from gen1 to gen4, so that doesn't matter at all. For power, as long as your PSU has at least one of the connectors in pics related on a 12v rail (so called "PCIe power connectors"), you should be good to go on anything with a TDP of 130W or less.
