I can't tell you how many times I've seen people comment that it's good to finally see Kratos getting some character development, so he can finally turn into a character we identify with and can relate to. Which, first of all, seven fucking games in - it's a bit too goddamned late to be working on character development. Secondly, you're not supposed to identify with or sympathize with Kratos. He's just a paper thin excuse for gameplay mechanics, and a villain on top of that. At the most charitable, he could be described as a classic Greek hero in a tragedy. If you identify at all with him, it's through his faults which end up fucking himself and everyone around him over - and which always serve as the downfall of the hero and the ruin of nearly everyone he comes across. A hue problem with the game is that it rewards basically everything you do, and the most XP you can get is through non-lethal takedowns. This is a shit way to handle character progression, because it does not encourage to play the game as you want.
In the original Deus Ex you only get XP for completing objectives and quests, leaving the how up to the player. If you want to go on a rampage and gun down everyone you're free to do so, the same holds true if you want to ghost by without alerting anyone, both styles of play are equally rewarding with skill points.

Even beyond this, it irritates me that people keep acting like this side of Kratos is something new. In Ascension, Kratos was much softer spoken than we're used to and was visibly sad at having to kill Orkos (the guy with the black goop powers), and that was on top of the brief glimpses of his softer side that it showed through the flashbacks of his family. Even in the first game he wasn't shouting all the time and its final boss fight went as far as to have a one-off mechanic where you fucking hug his family to restore their health. And the devs didn't make anywhere near as big deal about it in either case as they're doing with this new one.
If they didn't pretend it was some brand new aspect of his character it wouldn't bother me so much. The way the marketing's focused on the story so much makes it seem like they're not confident in the gameplay itself. God knows people aren't going to be making combo videos out of it like they did with 3 and Ascension.

It was a fun game, but it lacked a lot of replayability. This could have been easily solved by adding in a few alternate paths in the game. Little bonuses would have been nice too like if you get to that one building under a certain time limit, you can save that one chick from dying. The ability to join that one group at the hospital rather than killing them all would have been nice. TLOU had a lot of potential, but it wasted a lot of it.
I would have loved to spend more time in the initial outbreak as well. Can you imagine that if you could save your daughter from dying, you got an entirely new game? Rather than trying to take Ellie somewhere, you spend the game protecting your daughter as society falls around you. Kinda like in the first tell tale twd game, but with gameplay.

I'm the kind of person who likes complex action. I don't especially care for crunching numbers, but stuff like DMC, Dragon's Dongma and games where you have all sorts of combat depth, extras, easter eggs and new game+ appeals to me. The game could have had some depth to it, but it was shoehorned in to the most boring genre possible, and that is fucking over-the-shoulder TPS, where there is very little depth and room for creativity. Oh but the game had CRAFTING (adds no depth and lifted from other games) and BATVISION/INSTINCT/WHATEVER THE FUCK (also lifted from other games). You can see how badly these mechanics fit in to the game, and that is because the gameplay lacks inspiration. They went story first, everything else later, if even that. The only selling point was the story, and in that case it is no better than a god damned movie.
The Japanese manage to make anything, ANYTHING, watchable, readable or playable without breaking suspension of belief, no matter how insane a premise is and manage to actually make it fun. The west was capable of this, but now it fucking fumbles in telling the most simplest of stories. It is not that TLOU was unrealistic or about muh family, but because it was so utterly and disgustingly BLAND, both storywise and gameplaywise. It felt "designed" to tug at your heartstrings, and I honestly felt like my feelings were being manipulated. It was not the good kind of manipulating you usually feel from a good video game, but rather this game was really fucking straining to get you to feel something, and I saw right through it. The game didn't feel "genuine," it was like watching aliens try and design a game for humans. And surprise surprise, everyone fell for it, because you can only catch certain fish with a certain bait.
I have to admit I didn't even stomach WATCHING this stupid shit on Jewtube, because of how incredibly cliched the entire story and premise was. Playing that would have put me to sleep.

I really wish we got to play that portion of the game rather than having to sit through a time skip where everyone has already settled down.It's like playing a wild west game set after 1900. The deaths would have been fine had there been different paths, so that some of them could be avoided. The way they were set up was too obvious. More gameplay would have been great as well. Why not do what DA:O did where you can be attacked on the world map? Why not create a world map for players to navigate? It doesn't have to be some major open world game like MGSV tried to be, but more like FFT where you can move in certain directions to go to different locations and towns. Create locations and let players navigate them at their leisure. Create events that have to be done in a certain order for them to initiate. You can add little bonuses like new weapons, ect for them too. Add ng+ and make it so that players have to go through twice to unlock them all. Have multiple endings, so that players can choose the one that pleases them best. It's so obvious and it's been done before in other games over the years. RPGs used to be big on them. I don't see why people eat up the cinematic experience bs when the core gameplay isn't there. The movies were supposed to be little rewards for playing the game and not the reason to play them in the first place.
