That's fucking neat, though the regenerating health is gay.

Honestly, there's so much untapped potential in the arena shooter genre is ridiculous, yet it's so incestuous in terms of design since every iteration is just another Quake 3 clone with negligible alterations to weapon balance and movement tech, instead of fundamentally shaking up the core. Imagine an arena shooter with destructible environments or dynamic environments, or being able to flip your own gravity so you can walk on the ceiling instead of the floor, or weapon ammunition being much more limited, or relying more on weapon combos, just to throw something out there.

That's a pretty blatant ripoff of Portal, hopefully they do a bit more with it.

The second map they showed really surprised me due to it being boring at first until I realized all the verticality hidden outside view it had, including that single platform at the bottom of the map.

I was expecting some really lazy tryhard shit but this is actually looking decent outside the generic weapons and obvious early build.

Also like how the movement works, after you make a first jump you dont have a second one, it's more of a jetpack ala Tribes.

If it had higher time to kill it might be fun. You would have to use the portals in clever ways to flank your enemy. This just looks like trash, with the portals just making the level more complicated that it should be with a fast paced shooter.

The gameplay looks incredibly slowed down like any other CoD type game and the portals while interesting seem to just be an artificial effort to make it any different from the new halo games. But the portals aren't nearly enough to make it a completely different game.

It just looks like a generic console shooter wrapped in portals.

It's an interesting idea, but they need good level design, especially if they're going to introduce such a mechanic. The demo looks like some very mediocre map design that doesn't leverage the portals at all.

With the devs deliberately making maps with portals in mind, it seems unlikely they'll gimp their core gimmick to remove "exploits." Reddit loves portal and they love the shiny glow-tech aesthetic which the game has (like overwatch, rocket league, heck even portal). They often view arena-shooters as the premier old-school hardcore experience, and playing them makes you cool. It's like a redditor's "meme game," and it'll probably be well received there.

It looks okay-ish. It needs more Unreal Tournament-esque weapons to really flesh out the portal idea though. Currently it's just a basic FPS but with portals. Add in shit like spider mines, bouncing deathballs, and homing rockets and you've got something that would be fun as fuck.

Huniepop is a different beast from a PR perspective, because of the nature of the game they would never get good PR in the first place. Since that's the case, it was a good decision for them to get people outraged at them and flustered. The Wormhole Wars devs seem like they aren't close to releasing a product, so allowing a slew of articles to call them misogynistic shitlord would cause those articles to be the only results when they finally do release quite awhile from now, when the inertia of "any PR is good PR" had worn off.
