AMIGA THREAD
Talk about Amiga/Commadore games here and discuss using the Amiga in CY+3 as a computer. Post your favorite games and demos. Post your favorite machines.
I'm personally looking to get a A1200 soon. I wanna screw around with emulation on a RPi, but I heard RPis are full of binary blobs. All the other alternitves are Chinese and have no documentation.

I'm looking forward to that C64-retro-mini-whatever they're releasing at the end of the year. Apparently you can use it like a proper C64, it's not just some ROMs and a front-end menu, so I wouldn't mind doing some old BASIC programming on it.

Oh fuck, a Commodore thread. I just set up my battlestation with a PET, Amiga 500+ and breadbin C64. Have a extension in my C64 power supply to protect it, and finally ordered a heat sink and other shit for it, and updated my kickstart in my 500 to 3.1 with new Workbench disks.
I really want to get my PET hooked up to the internet to use a glorified IRC terminal, and once I finally get off my ass and get a Vampire 2 card for my 500, I'll consider using that as my main PC for a while.

Most of my gaming childhood was on DOS/Windows PCs but very early was Amiga for Pac-Mania, Hybris, and Crystal Hammer, plus a few randoms. I'm still trying to remember a few games though, one was a grid-based puzzle thing, and another was extremely primitive 3D moving around. Also what's the equivalent to No-Intro for Amiga games? Because too many of the ones I've found have, well, intros/trainers and they're cancer.

A little bit of column A a lot of column B.
You had stuff like Fire and Ice, Ambermoon, Darkmere and generally superior versions of PC games but then you also had a bunch of garbage which got praised for being made by popular developers like Gods.

Istead of a Beagle Bone Black or what ever is also on the market I would choose an implementation on a FPGA or other reconfigureable hardware
If you can find it (or build it yourself), a cheap Minimig (Amiga 500 on Spartan 3) or the new MiST (has also cores for Atari ST, C64 or an Amiga 1200 AGA) which costs around 250 monetary units.

I like this kind of cute game, but no matter what words I try to "spell", it rejects it and sends me back to same level. ;_;
As far as hardware goes, I'm fine with just a barebones Amiga 500 + 512K expansion. And these days a floppy emulator of course.
My favorite old times with Amiga was playing games like Lemmings, F/A-18 Interceptor, Flashback, Gods, Leander, Loom, and Monkey Island. Shadow of the Beast was weird and fun but a tad bit too hard for me. In contrast, Agony was a tad too easy.

It's still 5x the cost of ARM board, so not really dirt cheap. Plus the SBC isn't limited to just emulation.
FPGA only seems cheap because real Amiga hardware prices have gone up a lot in the past 5 years. It's entirely related to the retro console collector/reseller craze and youtube propaganda. In reality, most Amigas just sit unused while people actually depend on WinUAE or similar for convenience. But it wasn't that long ago you could find a working Amiga 500 for $50.
In a way it's curious that this happened, because Amiga isn't idiot-friendly like game consoles. But now you can find people on eab.abime.net making demands as to how hobbyist programmers should make their games in their own free time. Yeah, that's not gonna fly, especially since hardly anyone still makes Amiga games anymore. Why bother, since you'll just get shit on by lamers, when you could instead make a C64 release and not deal with all that grief?
So anyway, maybe the lamers will just get bored and leave Amiga scene eventually, thus bringing prices of hardware back to something more sane.

Looking back at old western European games, my god, most of them are shit. Tracker music and demoscene are cool, but just going through all the games released in the 80s there is so much fucking trash. About the only really decent Commodore/ZX Spectrum/cpc games are
Dan Dare
Saber Wulf
Jet Set Willy and Manic Miner
C64 Turrican
Giana
C64 Cybernoid
Everything else is really shit or kind of mediocre, Apple II ports or arcade ports, with even the mediocre ports tending to be more fun than the main software. And most of the good Amiga games have IBM DOS ports, about the only good things that weren't ported over were Psygnosis games and Turrican, that's the main reason why people mention them when they talk about Amiga games.

The Amiga gaming scene actually makes me fucking mad because of all the sheer wasted potential inside. The programmers, graphics artists and music composers at the time were fucking top-tier as a result of everyone trying to show off in the demoscene, but the game designers themselves… Jesus fucking Christ.
For the C64/Speccy/Amstrad you could at least make the excuse that the hardware didn't allow for much beyond cheap Atari 2600 tier games in terms of scope, but even by the time the Amiga came out none of the Europeans had any frame of reference of what makes a really good game that stands the test of time, with only some few exceptions here and there. They couldn't even match the inventiveness of Japanese arcade gaming either.

You're either full of shit or have very narrow interests in a niche genre that didn't get much attention on C64. If you head over to lemon64.com you'll find plenty of games rated 7.5 or higher. They tend to rate pretty fairly too, with ample discussion/reasonings in the comments sections.
Anyway I don't care about if a game is better on another platform, otherwise I'd have collected arcade cabinets and Neo-Geo games. The IBM PC clones were expensive compared to a C64 or even Atari ST or Amiga 500 in the 80's. All that mattered is if a game was fun to play, unless you happened to be rich and could afford to throw money out the window. Now of course there's emulation, so you can pick which versions to play without spending money. But even so, as someone who grew up on 8-bit computers, I appreciate a well-made game. It wasn't all just lame Spectrum ports (not hating on the ZX Spectrum, it has some nice games too).
8d9263 No.14637231

Those 8-bit computers are way beyond an Atari 2600 tbh. Even the lowly ZX Spectrum allows for much greater depth of gameplay. For example:

Windows 3 was just an add-on for DOS. Most PC games before Win95 ran in DOS, and rightly so because back then you often needed to grab all the resources, unless you're talking about really simple and/or slow turn-based games. Actually, even in DOS you sometimes had to free up all the memory by removing TSR's, juggling memory configuration in CONFIG.SYS, and sometimes outright making a boot floppy just for that game.
Curiously, the C64 as a platform continued to get manufactured until 1994, which happens to also be the same year Commodore went out of business. It's entirely possible they would have continued to produce it longer otherwise. After all, there were markets like eastern Europe and Russia where most people just couldn't afford expensive computers. You can even observe this today if you go on here:
http://www.atarimania.com/advanced-search-atari-400-800-xl-xe-game-_8_G.html
and search by date (plug in 1995 for example), most of the results are from Poland, Czech, and so on. It's not much surprise that today they still have Atari parties in Poland.

Will you help me identify a game? I was very young when I played it, so I don't remember much. I think it was for the Commodore64.
The first level was a side-view beat-em-up. You fight one guy. No fancy, flashy moves with special effects. Just two guys brawling. I think they were dressed like bikers. Just one round of fighting.
After beating him, you go to the next level. This level is a top-down racer. You're on a motorbike, being chased by a truck. You have to avoid rocks and use ramps to jump over puddles of water. If you hit an obstacle you slow down a bit. Slow down to much and the truck hits you. I never beat that level, so I don't know what comes next.
