The source code for the classic mac version of System Shock was just released by Night Dive Studios, as penance for their failure to deliver on schedule with the System Shock remake kikestarter. Let's have a System Shock thread in celebration.

regardless of intentions, source code release is always a good thing. Of course, the reality of their intentions are they are just throwing us scraps, do not call them based at all. Only John Carmack deserves that for releasing all the ID tech engines as soon as they were done with them. The mac version seems to have CD audio, 2D elements redone in 640*480 and maybe more color? However it's written for PowerPC CPUs so it will not work on x86 unless alot of work is put in.

comparison screenshots from the systemshock forums, as you can see, the woman's portrait looks significantly better and everything else is higher res too. Also, the music seems to be different than the DOS version, i.e. some parts are longer, some parts were removed, some parts added, extra instruments etc, rather than just done in a different sound font. Here's an example video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f3q356rZqQ4

Yeah, Mac ports were invariably about a zillion times better than wintel originals, or even Amiga/Atari ports, thanks to the fact Macs did everything in software with far more powerful CPUs, instead of relying on invariably primitive hardware "acceleration" tied to laughably outdated CPUs:
>640x480 or much, much higher with multi-monitor support in the case of most flightsims and the like instead of 320x200
>8-bit with 24-bit palette, or higher, instead of fixed 8-bit palette
>full PCM sound instead of wavetable bleepbloop with crappy hardware MIDI
>6 or more software sound channels instead of the 3 or 4 usually imposed by wintel soundcards
>designed with large SCSI HDDs and 1.4MB floppies in mind, instead of tiny/optional HDD and outdated 5.12" floppies
>decent memory addressing, and most users had megs of RAM, instead of playing with goofy segmented addressing
>CD-ROM/LAN/joystick that was actually plug&play, so more people actually used them
It wasn't until the late 90s that wintel accelerators really advanced beyond what Macs did in software (VooDoo 2, TNT, Aureal, SB Live, etc).

I don't think this is a left vs. right thing. The SJW craze is very much like older right-wingers becoming "born again" and going fundie, only it's new enough for most people that it still has an air of authenticity within counterculture.
Such moralfaggotry will eventually be purged from counterculture, too, but I think we need at least one full generation who grew up struggling against their parents' enforcement of it for that to happen.

Truth is often unintentionally created by story authors. Maybe these accidently made or good game? Or a third option: They were simply different people back then and didn't let politics distact them from making a good game, especially since games then weren't infected back then, they had no excuse to do it. Also the design philosphy of games were also different, effort was required and you wouldn't want to waste it making trash.
>>14620224
how about a third option: You're a retard. The DOS version isn't going to natively support CD audio, game content is trivial to aqquire and you're making a non point.

I don't think that's the issue, because you can see there were some pretty good-looking Amiga shootans. It's just that Commodore kept repackaging 1980s tech with minor improvements, while the shitty IBM-PC actually got much better with time.
