The e-Reader/e-cards was an interesting little idea that was basically DLC add on's without the internet, the downside was clunky was of using it. To access e-Reader content into a GBA game, you need a 2nd GBA and link cable (while GCN was just standard GBA to GCN connection) Considering Nintendo didn't even bother to release it in Europe, even they didn't have full confidence in it despite having some good ideas like Super Mario Advance 4 addition content

Nintendo really dropped the ball with Wii-NDS connectivity when it would have worked better than GCN-GBA. Wireless connectivity, more buttons (and touch/microphone) inputs, more screens for "hidden" info for each player, better processing power, longer battery life and light up screen.
Here's a basic list of Wii to NDS connective titles (game in each hardware)
>Pokemon Battle Revolution (the first)
>Pokemon Ranch (WiiWare)
>WarioWare DIY Showcase (WiiWare) to WW:DIY
>Animal Crossing:Wild World to AC:CF for transferring your item catalog where Nintendo region locking nearly bit Aussie players in the ass due to transfer issues
>FFCC:Echoes of Time co-op (the Wii version is basically the NDS game but could also be played locally or online)
>Geometry Wars
>Batman Brave and the Bold (unlocks Bat-Mite for "basic" 3 player co-op)
>Guitar Hero/Band Hero roadie mode multiplayer and set list creation
>Castlevaina Judgment to CV:Order of Ecclesia
>Earth Seeker (JP only) to an ES DSiware application for minigames and item transferring (possibly the only Wii game that connects to DSiware title)
Wii to NDS without a game in each system (one sided if you will)
>Jam with the Band to Wii Speaker Channel (only available via code with JwtB)
>Nintendo Channel for NDS demos
>MaBoShi: The Three Shape Arcade (WiiWare) downloads a demo of the 3 games
>My Word Coach Wii (for stylus input of letters instead of drawing with Wii Remote)
>Transfer Mii's from Mii Channel to Personal Trainer Walking (or even 3DS)
Wii U to 3DS
>Smash Bros Wii U to 3DS version for Mii fighter sharing/optional controller or eShop's 3DS controller app
>The Download Play option for the DS which allowed multiplayer with only one game cartridge was one of the least Jewish things Nintendo has ever done. A shame it fell out of use in the 3DS era.
It's been around since the GBA era, (single cart multiplayer) with games like Mario Kart:SC, Advance Wars (which didn't really need funnily enough with it's turn based gameplay) and many more. One of the issues with this is transferring a small enough version of the game into the other systems RAM, it's why games like MK (SC/DS/7) or Luigi's Mansion 2 multiplayer just use pallet swaps of single characters (Yoshi/Shy Guy/Luigi) to help save RAM space. With 3DS games are now much bigger and with online play being popular this has possibly made it's use go down. Then again Nintendo released Tank Troopers through eShop last year whose entire marketing gimmick was download play even though the dev admitted that an earlier build did have online play but was removed.
