It seems like mods kept that game alive with tons of inventive ideas and it was prime youtuber b8.

Did the modders also drop it when their youtube overlords turned to streaming?

Or if i were to go and look do people like the yogscast and achievement hunter STILL make minecraft videos to a massively declining audience?

It seems strange to think it was this massive fad and nobody on earth but giga autists care anymore.

The game is like 8 years old now, no shit it's not as popular as it once was.

Too many threads like this seem to try and start a real discussion, but end up just asking dumb questions, that the OP can likely answer himself

0ce68e No.14595683

>>14595619

I don't think people understand that the biggest appeal in the game that gave it it's popularity was 1) not having a gun strapped to your right arm at all time like every other FPS, you actually got far more interaction with the game with other stuff and 2) being able to change the environment on the fly to suit your needs.

It's like giving someone a level editor for their favorite FPS but it's so simple to use that even kids can do it and doesn't feel like it's pointless or apart from the gameplay since it's the actual gameplay. And on top of that, you do end up doing far more in that world than just shooting things.

However, these concepts have already been copied and redone a million times with a million clones. None of them will ever be as popular as Minecraft but each one does a specific thing better than Minecraft and will atract it's niche of players, slowly dripping away from the Minecraft playerbase.

For instance, you want actual exploration and a better progression, you get Terraria. It's only 2D, some of it looks even worse, but if you care more about actually discovering neat shit and fighting fun enemies, you'll prefer it.

Or you can go with FortressCraft if you like Factorio in 3D (or so I've heard). Probably won't have the same type of content and simplicity that Minecraft has, but it has a lot of content and inbuilt industrial progression.

Or you can go with Dragon Quest Builders for the town building aspect.

Or Portal Knights if co-op and construction is your thing.

Or 7 Days to Die if you need your zombies and realistic guns.

Or The Forest if you just want to make it out in the wilds against cannibals.

These and many others do lack stuff that Minecraft has, but at the end of it, can you name a specific reason to go back to Minecraft? Something unique it has that you can't find now in other games and that merits playing Minecraft instead of some other game? That's why it lost popularity, because why download a mod to include that specific type of gameplay you want when you can instead download an entire game built from the ground up to have that specific gameplay you want?

What really gets to me is that no one bought the LEGO rights and made a Minecraft clone out of them and then hoarded shekels by releasing content packs with characters, critters and enemies from old sets and adding functionality parts that let you building machines, vehicles, etc. Seems like a missed opportunity to be drowned in cash.

Same fundamental problem as Skyrim.

>Core gameplay is shallow

>Mods don't fundamentally alter the gameplay, just add bells and whistles and polish to it

That being said, Minecraft had the single best game mode of all time and I'm sad it died out. Let me tell you about

>Dwarves vs Zombies

>Be dwarf

>Pick from classes or customize your gear in he lobby

>Join a game of 20-40 players

>For the first 10 minutes, run around mining cobble, making torches, building walls, making armour and most importantly, gathering gold

>Then something happens, killing a portion of the dwarves, usually something that temporarily encourages team killing

>Dead dwarves play as monsters, and where monsters go NPC zombies crawl

>After a rousing speech from the hero NPC (that one lucky player is chosen to play) it's fucking on

>Monsters can attack, and when they deal damage they get points that they can use to level up

>At one point you could be a zombie, bomb-laying 'goblin' (creeper) or a skeleton archer that could shoot fire arrows

>Random events would frequently happen to give the monsters bonus mobs to play as such as ogres, spiders, rats, skeleton pirates

>The monsters goal was to conquer each shrine and kill the dwarves

>The dwarves actually had no win con, you were just fighting to see how good you could give it

>As a dwarf takes damage their armour slowly decays and when on no armour they take massive damage and can die quickly

>Remember that invaluable gold you mined?

>Gold in your shrine slowly ticks down to restore your armour

>When the gold runs out of a shrine, you desperately hold off for as long as you can but inevitably are forced to retreat

>All the while you're trying to throw up more defences to stall the mobs

God damn it was fantastic. 40-60 minute full last-stand experience and I loved it every time. Paladins became a favourite of mine when they made it so hammers gained bonus damage for every 100 mob kills you got, and hammers did splash damage to begin with, so you were encouraged to stand in the middle of a hoard of enemies and swing until you needed to bail out.

I'll never forget the NPC chant before battle began. Shit got me pumped like you wouldn't believe.

I feel similarly about the alpha anarchy servers.

Servers that never got reset, were populated by so many different groups and guilds that came and went, each changing the land around while they stayed.

You ended up with castles and towns half destroyed, with other castles and towns above and below them. No flat spaces and water falling everywhere. It was a surreal experience to be in a massive team battle where all the layers came into effect, and you would go from shooting arrows in a water stream to fighting in a destroyed town to running through a labarynth of old battle grounds.

On some of them, you'd even see the map get mined put almost entirely, devoid of resources and trees, where every stick and plank is worth it's weight in gold.

Damn I miss it.

The problem is that there is no actual game designer working for Minecraft. It's a collection of Coders who will either make new stuff if it's easy to code like Reskinned animals. Or if it's challenging to code, such as fire optimisation or leaf growth in the least number of cycles, Notch was particularly proud of that last one. Because of the lack of a designer, the game is growing in no particular direction and is starting to suffer because of it.

It's not becoming an industrial game like Infinifactory. It's not becoming a combat game like Terraria. It's not got infinitely explorable and varied terrain like No Man's Sky.

If the coders at Notch had any idea what they were doing, they'd have literally the best game ever made, unfortunately they spent 10 years playing with Nerf guns and are getting what they deserve.

it was fun for kids to do multiplayer, and fun for autists to experiment with, and fun for some people to play survival for a little bit before it gets boring at the very beginning of the games life.

the game added half cocked updates that added some neat stuff but none of it really worth replaying the game so once you got bored there was little reason to return. once microsoft bought it and added story modes, nobody cared except the autistic kids still playing it.

minecraft had some base building customizations. i remember i built a giant walled compound full of animals and "farms" for infinite supplies of food. (and many satelite stations so i was never too far from a place to rest and resupply/totem poles/signs) and used torches to make paths and landmarks. eventually building a railroad system between them.

the "gameplay" focus in minecraft is base building. the the reward for the grind is to build bigger/better bases which makes exploring easier, so you can build bigger better bases. someone who has played on a map for a long time will have a larger/cooler base as the fruit of their labor.

contrast this with the "gameplay" focus in NMS; exploration. the reward for its grind is to explore more with no tangible reward besides "i got to see more stuff" and there is no purpose to seeing more stuff, just to grind more and see more stuff. no fruit of your labor that you can sit back and feel like you accomplished something.

"making a lego box house with no windows is just as good as an autism-mansion" cmon, do you honestly not understand the appeal of legos and other similar toys?

Also my problem with MC is that vanilla lacks things to do, and mods are incoherent bloated messes.

Sure you could make a graphing calculator out of pistons and redstone like that one Redditor did, but it'd be a frustrating effort of slapping your dick on the keyboard until it's done, especially because placing redstone and timers is cumbersome at best. So at that point you might as well use a mod that adds simple timers and logic gates, and then it becomes a "trivial" project so why bother?

Like what? A boat that you don't need? Or a bucket to remove lava flows? Or a diamond pickaxe to mine through everything? The problem is that these are in your own words "you can mine shit to mine more".

NMS on the other hand added vehicles to aid exploration and has more varied terrain and fauna than Minecraft.

Minecraft took 100 days to program horses that probably aren't worth the cost, much like dogs.

The problem with NMS was that the entire premise was "lets look at procedurally generated stuff" and they added in bland gameplay and a dumb story to fill the bits in between to justify a $60 price tag when the concept deserved a $5 at best.

The problem with Minecraft is that the lack of direction and the lack of motivation of Mojang's employees has let the game rot in it's filth for 7 years with nothing like Pistons to actually move the core gameplay forward.

Only an aspie would build things for no reason. You have to have some reason to build and to have actual things you need to build for Minecraft to be an actual game. Otherwise it's just a way for aspies to build a 1 for 1 replica of the USS Enterprise.

As a perfect example, why build things from stone when dirt works almost exactly the same? In fact, the best way to defend your home in Minecraft was to disguise your house as part of nature rather than making castles.

Updates have effectively split the modding-base. For a long time, there were no updates, with 1.7.10 was the most recent version. That caused a lot of mods to be made and updated for that version. 1.8 eventually came out, and so much of the fundamental code was rewritten, that modding had to be figured out all over again. So there was even more time where 1.7.10 was the latest moddable version. Then Forge for 1.8+ versions was released, and that caused the first division. A lot of people didn't want to move from the version that had all their favorite mods. Others demanded that every mod be updated for 1.8+, because they refused to play on anything but the most recent version of MC. Some modders didn't want to bother having to update to a new, very different version of MC. Some wanted to only support the most recent versions, for the curse bucks. Just as icing on the shit cake, each new version of Minecraft is incompatible with mods for older versions, meaning each update fractures the modders even more. Also, modding, in 1.8+, takes a severely larger amount of resources than previous versions, because the main dev behind Forge is an egotistical, autistic fatass who refuses to acknowledge most problems with it as being his fault. Either "it's the modders for fucking up", even when it is demonstrably Forge that isn't working correctly, or "people simply don't have good enough computers." Because it's reasonable to expect people to have top of the line PCs for playing fucking Minecraft. I have never seen a modding community as arrogant, greedy, and stupid as Minecraft's, and it's a shame.

It's not an issue of "must" vs. "can", it's an issue of "why bother". There's no incentive to build a house more complex than an empty cube. There's no reason to do anything but build a small wheat farm for the purpose of feeding yourself. Sure, you can build a giant, redstone automated farm that gives you thousands of wheat in a short time-frame, but there's no purpose to getting that much wheat in that little time. You can build a big, pretty mansion, but all you get out of it is something pretty to look at. While both of those can be a satisfying result, as a builder, it largely ignores the "game" portion of Minecraft, and you can accomplish the exact same thing, for the exact same reward, in creative mode. Minecraft makes a good sandbox, but it's a terrible game.

numale's cry has a lot in common with Minecraft, it's a tech demo for creating worlds with a bunch of random as fuck gameplay mechanics thrown on haphazardly. But that's the problem with these types of games. They start out as cool tech demos, and that's all they are. But you can't sell a tech demo, so they try and turn it into a game by just randomly throwing things on it. Everyone who was playing Minecraft from the early days knows it. It started out as an autistic block building and exploring game. Then they started adding more building tools, and it was cool. but then they ran out of ideas, the new building blocks were stupid and they barely got used. So they gave up, and decided it was better to try adding new game mechanics. And that's when it all started going down hill with shit like the hunger bar. And BlowGang didn't know what the fuck they were doing or how to make a game. They knew how to make a voxel block based tech demo where you can add and remove blocks in a generated world. Everything after that was an afterthought. And that's why it turned in a steaming pile of shit and a giant mess. Obviously MS helped, because I'm sure every step of the way there was some business man telling all the developers

>oh no sorry you can't do that we did some market research here and that won't sell

>>14598027

It's basically what Minecraft ripped off, before Mojang started shilling it on places like leddit and Minecraft grew. Only thing Notch was good at was making a bloated tech demo and conning ledditors into thinking it's a sweet game.

Holy fuck, this was the post I was going to make pretty much exactly.

Apathy can be a devastating weapon when applied on a grand scale, and Minecraft is no exception. Because they didn't update for over a year, they created a bubble within the community, something that hadn't really happened before. Post-Adventure you had some of the purists upset over the removal of the Far Lands, but it was a simple fix and most of us kept trucking on. The build up to Bountiful was something entirely different.

One of the biggest flaws with modding, as pointed out in >>14597527, is that they have little to no coherency. Integration is sparse, except for those with a million+ in downloads, made by teams that would rival Mojang's own. And why aren't they integrated, you ask? Because those who develop these mods have no time to do that. You integrate your mod with another, you integrate it for one version only. Next version their mod will be built entirely differently, as will yours, and you'll have to figure it out all over again. The continued insistence on using Java is the exact thing that has done Minecraft in ever since the Beta days.

They should have implemented a service that dealt with porting mods from version to version, because as it stands, you have a majority playerbase who considers everything beyond 1.7.10 non-canon, and an ever-dwindling minority that tries to move with the times before inevitably getting ran over. Modding for this game is a complicated nightmare with the only consolation that everything is open-source and provided you have an elementary understanding of Java, can polish some of that roughness out to make something that looks somewhat Vanilla.

I remember exactly what you're talking about, though it took me a minute to find the name; I shilled it for free a while back, since I thought it looked a teensy bit promising. It's Skywanderers.

Principally made by one Frog, might have some other contributors. Notable for having seemingly solved the scalability, maximum speed and mid-development featureitis problems, maybe optimization also since I assume this frog doesn't have a supercomputer; everything has been dedicated towards frontloaded engine groundwork and baseline features. Has over 30 dev diaries, numbered or otherwise.

Since it's in closed pre-alpha for Kikestarter donators only, and I haven't been paying much attention at all, I have no idea if it has a real gameplay loop yet or isn't just a test mode. Rather than try and sift through for the most relevant diaries, I'll just drop this shiny looking display video of a Mobile Suit-style mech; beside ships, groundwork was laid very early for terrestrial and semi-terrestrial vehicles, namely hovercraft, Battletech style walking tanks with vehicle controls, and humanoid Mobile Suits that control like a player character walking around.

There's far more relevant videos I could link, but I feel like the MS and the scale of this one are novel and attention grabbing even at this early stage; it'll be interesting to see if pseudo-AMBAC granted by having ordinary player controls gives similar agility advantages to MS in Gundam itself in space combat.

It got stagnant and the updates started to become boring and mundane. What mods accomplish could be added legitimately into the game in a matter of days, but for some reason it takes them forever to add water physics.

Beside that niche interest of mine, you can see anything really relevant in this >>14598039 trailer, although it's pretty plainly a mockup made with alpha mechanics. Again, unless more progress has been made than I thought, there's no gameplay loop yet, no survival shit, just groundwork on groundwork. But other novel features, from memory and after a quick review, include;

>parts can clip instead of having hard collision at all times on the same craft, which is very useful in varying degrees for things like sliding doors and telescoping parts

>easy function parts/blocks that are more or less out-of-box functional like the trash that is Minecraft redstone or piston blocks without taking up the ludicrous amount of space or having the same lack of control; at the same time they have a good degree of the programability of Space Engineers or Empyrion without so much menu clutter, as you can directly go up to buttons & panels and link them to function blocks in the 3D environment

>environments are more or less 1:1 in scale, FTL speed is a matter of sheer throttle and not a warp mechanic as I recall

>proper bubble shields, though the current WIP appears to only be up to capacitor blocks

>repair system that remembers destroyed blocks' placement; gamestate save of a ship and exported/imported blueprints are kept separately, which I imagine should help prevent wonky misremembering by the game of damage levels

Sage because I'm doing it for free and feel a bit distasteful. But essentially, the reason to keep tabs on it is because the development cycle is not fucked up and backwards like every other game in the genre has been, so it looks like it'll turn out a lot better given time than those games which blew their load on shitty survival modes with incomplete mechanics.

This is caused by several things:

1) minecraft was never designed to have fast movement, and whenever something was added to let the player move faster it fucked shit up because of how long it took a load and/or render chunks, there was never any smart way of predicting where the player would move to next so that a path could be loaded preemptively

2) if parts of the world were not visible they were rendered regardless, if you looked down you were technically "seeing" all the caves and light sources beneath the ground

3) merging the client/server code did not help matters except for modders because now you connected to an internal server to play single player and none of the above issues were rectified

4) forge, forge is actually a monstrously bloated hunk of shit that drags down performance without any other mods, and it has been like that at least since 1.6.4 and only gotten worse as far as I can tell, seriously do a comparison, run minecraft vanilla and then install forge, see how much of a difference it makes

I've compared tekkit (v1.2.5) to FTB (v1.5.x) to FTB (v1.6.4) and despite FTB for 1.5 having more mods and graphical enhancements it performed far better than for 1.6.4 with less mods and graphical overhauls, tekkit for 1.2.5 was on-par with FTB for 1.5 getting over 100fps at any given time

>>14596578

I know these points all too well, but building is all about the aesthetic, and having a nice base is all the reward I think is needed for that.

Other things that are completely not thought out:

>boats, meant to help you traverse water instead of having to build a railway are less convenient because of them breaking when they hit everything

only for the combat update did they fix that, but made boats irrelevant by adding the frost walker enchant

>beacons, a reward for beating a harder boss than the end dragon, has virtually no use because of the time/materials required to make the beacon base vs. how far it's AOE buff reaches

I could only see it being useful for fighting the wither again but for what purpose? and the wither could just blow up the damn beacon

also

>takes far too much time and resources to gather wither skulls to summon a wither vs. the reward for beating it

a nether star, which only has two uses now (thanks to the combat update), a beacon and I think it's used to re-summon the end dragon

>potion brewing now takes blaze powder as fuel, when the whole point of a blaze rod being in the recipe was that the blaze rod always burns thus no fuel is required

>potion clouds require dragon's breath, which is rather difficult to obtain and offer no benefit over splash potions other than if you miss your target they still have a slim chance of walking through the cloud

>potion tipped arrows are only really useful in pvp because of healing/harming having opposite effects on most mobs or not being able to hit teleporting mobs, in which case it's cheaper just to throw a potion

>risk of getting blaze rods is mostly negated thanks to addition of shields

>glider (elytra) requires the most time to obtain but takes DAMAGE on use, requiring constant repairs

>villagers are still jews, there's no fucking reason to waste resources on trading with them when it's cheaper just to harvest the resources yourself

>temples are fucking gay because they reward you with shit you get within the first few minutes of playing, discouraging exploration at all

the only example that differs is the ocean temples but enjoy your cyclops cat-urchin lasers

Oh, and one thing I learned recently was that potion brewing was originally intended to be done with the cauldron by, you guessed it, throwing items into it to modify the recipe (hence why the cauldron fills 3 bottles) but it was scrapped because notch thought it wasn't intuitive and too complicated

There was even a mod that I think never made it past half-baked status that implemented a crucible for making metal alloys but in the same way notch originally intended the cauldron be used for potions.

Are there any mods that nicely complement Matter Overdrive? I was thinking WarpDrive + Mystcraft (it seems you can make Myscraft dimensions acessible through space with WarpDrive, so they'd work like planets you can visit and all that), but is there anything else?

>ICBM (for ship-ship fighting)

>Sync (little mod that enables you to make clones of yourself and transfer your conscience into them when you die)

I'm looking for mods that will give me something to do, enemies to fight with my plasma guns, weird alien creatures to discover and catalog, etc. Anything interesting, really.
