New Deus Ex thread, because we need one. cuckchan, that's terror.

I just started my third playthrough. Playing on realistic, with an emphasis on heavy weapons and explosives. No dragon tooth sword. I'm not yet crazy enough to try one of the really absurd self imposed limitations, but that fucking sword breaks the game in half and I need to beat it for real.

d0a94d No.14594323

Sucks that you don't get anything special for avoiding Simons throughout the game. At least, I don't think you get anything. By "get anything" I mean like an alternative scene of him getting ass raped or something. You know, some closure on his character. If you avoid him at the hangar, he just kind of stops being relevant.

Have you seen the dialogue they put in if, following Paul's defection to the NSF, you refuse to send the Comm link to the resistance in Paris? I feel like they had a whole 'nother route planned where you stay bluepilled and side with UNATCO.

Am thinking of doing something that one anon mentioned last thread with no skills/no augs/realistic/drop all items when boarding helicopter but not being able to hack terminals is pretty close to rendering the game unbeatable for me. What do you guy think?

It is.

>Did they add quests or anything like that?

>The environments look radically different.

Yep! It's pretty much a pure gameplay and cosmetic (texturing, sound effects) mod. I think there are some subtle changes to most of the maps, mostly to include more detail, more trashcans in alleyways, stuff like that.

The augmentations have been altered a lot, which is probably the best change the mod makes. In the video you can see the strength aug allows you to not just move and carry heavy stuff around, but to hurl an explosive barrel away from you at 100 miles per hour as well. Seriously fun aug to use, and it only drains your bioenergy when you're hurling something heavy, which I think is fair.

The other aug worth mentioning is an arm aug that recovers a few points of biolectric energy for every melee kill or knockout you make. And the reward is doubled if it's a sneak attack. I think if you max it out you can get 15 points of energy for each knockout/kill, which you can use with the running speed aug and cloak aug to really tear through the game with a low tech weapon build. Very fun, though more challenging than I would have guessed (you really gotta keep the pace up or the cloak will shrek your bioenergy).

The gun handling in vanilla Deus Ex is pretty mediocre, imo. It just feels clunky and kinda non-responsive, like I'm phoning it in. The sound the guns make is also often lame. I mean, that white-paneled drum-fed assault shotgun makes a deep sound like some industrial pump humming along instead of an actual "BANG". The 10mm pistol (the one you start the game with and cannot silence) makes more of a grinding note than a "pop" or "crack" like it should.

My idea for good gun handling in games would be Crysis 1 or the Call of Duty Modern Warfare games from 2009-ish or so (say whatever you want about those games, but to me the guns feel very fun to shoot, with a distinct "feel" to each).

Many mods have addressed the gun handling and sound effects, though. Deus Ex: Revision and the latest GMDX both do it well, I'd say. Having unsatisfying guns in a first-person shooter of all things is unacceptable.

The only thing I would like to see changed with Deus Ex from where we are now is putting all the game content in a new engine, and possibly re-doing some artwork to match the more modern game engine's capabilities. Right now, we have mods that cram high-definition texture packs into that poor Unreal Tournament engine, but there's only so much you can do with that. Fully dynamic lighting, realistic shadows, and a more thorough sound effects library would be welcome. If you spend the whole game sneaking around, you might as well hear quite a few boot scuffling noises.

Embed related is some additional GMDX shilling, since I'm not sure everyone here has played it (but they should).

As long as you talk to everybody first to get quests / information / trade for goods, that's more or less okay.

There are quite a few NPCs you really don't want to antagonize, though. Smuggler, Ford Schick, Jock, Jordan Shea, anyone inside the Luminous Path compound… I'm not sure you can even kill or knock out these NPCs at all.

Vanilla Deus Ex doesn't put much loot on non-hostile NPCs, and I think what loot there is is fixed. I know I had the BionicMod or something installed once which gave randomized loot drops. A bit strange to find an augmentation upgrade canister from a bum's still-warm corpse, but w/e.

>>14605526

I thought the original Deus Ex was good about headshots for unarmored targets. Were you playing DX on "Realistic" difficulty? If not, yeah be prepared for bullet sponges. "Hard" difficulty is actually harder than "Realistic" for this reason.

Also, your post reminded me that one odd decision the devs for Deus Ex made was to allow skill points invested in e.g. rifles to increase the damage done by a sniper rifle, assault rifle, etc to the point where the "master" skill level gives you a +50% damage boost compared to "untrained". Which… makes basically no sense from a realism standpoint (for anything other than hand-to-hand weapons), but from an RPG standpoint it makes investing skill points in one or another weapons category more meaningful. Still, I think it's a problem, because Deus Ex is a first-person, real-time game where you manually line up every shot you make, rather than letting your character's stats determine the odds of a hit when you roll like in a conventional RPG. It's very frustrating how the game gives you the impression of thinking you really are lining up a shot, only to find it makes you miss or do little damage, at least until you invest those precious skill points to make you capable of shooting as accurately as you already actually can. STALKER wasn't completely innocent of this either… the crappy Makarov pistols in the early game can't hit the broad side of a barn (Were they actually that inaccurate? Maybe they're like those WWI-era M1911s, where the component tolerances are all really loose but it makes them reliable trench guns). But at least it didn't make you level-up your gun handling skill; that was something you were doing by playing the game itself!

>Why arent there any mods to make Fallout's gunplay more like STALKER? I just want realistic ballistics

I only really spent any substantial time playing Fallout 1&2, but they sorta do this already. When using a gun, making a targeted shot to an enemy's head is liable to knock them out if it doesn't kill them outright. A targeted shot to an arm or leg also can cripple the limb, making it very useful to shoot melee attackers in the legs to slow their advance towards you, or to shoot enemies using a two-handed weapon in the arms so they have to switch to a one-handed weapon (usually a crappier weapon) or fight unarmed. And of course, shooting someone in the groin is very likely to make them fall to the ground writhing in pain for a few combat turns. I think there's even something that pops up in the lower-left message box if you score a critical hit on a female NPC's groin, something like "With a perforated uterus, her child-bearing days are over as she slumps to the ground." Absolutely brutal.

yeah those were alright, I was talkin more about the newer ones… basically you start off with a perfectly fine 10mm pistol and even the weakest enemies take like 5 point blank shots to the face to kill them… its extremely disappointing.

There's something like "advanced settings" in the preferences with GMDX that lets you make security cameras physically tougher with alarms that go off sooner, as well as "overwhelming odds" that seems to increase the number of enemies by 50%. When coupled with the new AI you mentioned, these make the game a lot harder if you're doing a combat build, especially when MJ12 troopers some of whom can even CLOAK now are swarming onto your position. I had a great time on my second GMDX playthrough with those options (if I recall, you can't turn them on until you beat GMDX at least once or find some console command to override it).

And then you explain to your brother Paul at the Hell's Kitchen station that you "did your best". Kekkles. You know JC Denton, he's gotta protect his reputation as an agent who only sometimes visits the ladies' room at UNATCO.

Oh snap, I had this problem, too, playing it on Windows 7. Very annoying.

The only way I got around it was to go to the "Configure" panel in Kentie's GMDX launcher and choose these settings, which I arrived at through experiment:

>Renderer: Direct3D 10

>Viewport: Fullscreen

I think "Viewport: Windowed" worked as well, but it was… windowed. Not my style. Direct3D 9 might have worked as long as I did NOT choose "Viewport: Borderless fullscreen window", I can't recall now.

Pic related, my settings panel.

I think stalker somehow managed to pull this off in a very natural way, like you said rather than level up skills you just kinda level up irl and git gud, the pacing in the first half of the game perfectly accentuates this aspect of the game, it makes for very rewarding gameplay, I wish more games could pull this off

I'm running it through Wine on an old laptop, so newer DirectX libs tend to be much slower. Currently I'm using OpenGL renderer with New Vision removed (just deleted New Vision folder from game root), Framerate is more or less ok, no crashes during gameplay so far.

Any details on CPU/GPU/screen res for that "old laptop"? I got steady 120 fps on a Core 2 Quad with a Radeon 7850 at 1080p. But of course, I was running it natively in Win7…

The damage and accuracy enhancement for targeting is just too good, that's why I always abuse it. If you max it out it's like having "master" accuracy/damage for weapons skills while only investing enough skill points to achieve "trained" status.

The vision enhancement is fun and all but it only seems well-suited to a pacifist/stealth player or someone playing cautiously, or perhaps for the first time. Sadly, I've played the game enough to already know where the enemies are, so…

>>14609743

Oof, what is that laptop, from 2008? Anyway, glad to hear you can at least play the game even without all the fancy new vision stuff.

It's clunky and unbalanced. The game is important for the possibly accidental redpilled writing not the gameplay.

The interactivity and sheer variety of options at your disposal at any given moment are the main draws of the game. Player agency is consistently recognized and respected, which makes Deus Ex more than just the sum of its parts.

b02629 No.14622087

>>14621911

I'd say that the only balancing issue is that you're basically unstoppable once you get the dragon's tooth sword. This isn't much of a problem in realistic but even then the combination of that + stealth aug makes the game trivial. I always make an effort to go non lethal, though.

8da88e No.14622268

>>14622087

By

>stealth aug

did you mean "cloak" or "radar transparency"? Or either?

While I'd agree with you on the dragon's tooth sword, isn't this kind of balancing issue inevitable in a game with a high degree of player freedom regarding weapon selection and character customization, particularly in a game that offers both violent and pacifist solutions to every situation (Anna Navarre and Gunther Hermann don't count because "sticks and stones" :3), and does not usually reward or penalize the player for choosing one or the other?

I mean, I could make the same argument that the game is basically over once you achieve "advanced" skill in rifles and get the automatic shotgun and assault rifle, using buckshot for soft targets and 20mm HE grenades and sabot shells for robots. You do that, and you can practically forego stealth entirely and directly attack everything in the game and win. Deus Ex just plain has to be an easy game if you want that player who maxed swimming and environmental training and put no points into anything else and missed half the augmentation canisters to have a chance.

Shit, looks like I ran into another problem. After some package update Direct3D and OpenGL renderers stopped working in Wine. I'm using DX installed through Lutris with GMDX. Tried reinstalling graphics drivers, no effect. Wut do?

Tested base DX on the same prefix and Unreal on another, all have the same problem. Downgrading Wine has no effect either.

GMDX goes too far by forcing these nurenderers. the previous versions didn't have this stupid fucking launcher that forces new vision and forces the new renders.

does regular deus ex still work?

b7cc8e No.14628361

>>14627309

No, it seems to be a driver/OpenGL issue.

b7cc8e No.14628778

Alright, looks like I managed to fix the issue by completely removing nvidia drivers along with any traces of its dkms package and installing them again. Seems like something in dpkg broke during one of kernel updates.

>>14627309

>GMDX goes too far by forcing these nurenderers.

It doesn't force them, it gives you a choice of them. If you're playing under Windows the new Direct3D are a noticeable improvement.

>forces new vision

Just delete the New Vision folder, mod works just fine without it. I wish there was a version without New Vision, though. Fuck downloading 2 gigs from ModDB.

GMDX 9.0 is packed into a single exe installer, I don't think you can take New Vision out without breaking the installer.
