Besides Katawa Shoujo and Everlasting Summer, how many other VNs actually turned out well that wasn't made in Japan, or Korea? I see all these VNs on Steam and most of them don't look good or interesting. Art wise, many can't draw nice looking women either.
Also forgot to mention that I added 2 new links to the resources at the top of the OP. A link to a bunch of VN recommendation charts and a guide to good tablets for VNs. Then I added that little parenthesis section for the VN starter kit after seeing many replies of people asking for download links to VNs that are already in the starter kit. I doubt people who are new to the threads, or want a certain download, bother checking that pastebin so I thought that would help. Is there anything else I should add/remove? I removed the Otakulair link because the guy hasn't updated it in months. If he does start on it again, I'll most likely add it back. I was trying to find blogs on VNs too and haven't really found any worth linking yet as they were abandoned.

It's the threadly shitpost. Just filter, report, and move on. No need to reply to bait. But for those who take them seriously, I see visual novels are their own medium. Some just happen to be video games while there are some that are interactive DVDs like Phantom of the Inferno. Instead of having to explain which is and isn't a video game to every single person who could be curious or shitposting, they were all allowed to make things simpler and not devolve every discussion into semantics. Even then, visual novels have been on consoles and PC for decades now and I see no reason to argue that every single one of those are/are not a game when the person asking can look that information up themselves. If they really cared, they would request a VN that has gameplay and people here would recommend many VNs with gameplay like Ace Attorney, Sengoku Rance, or Utawarerumono.

Saying that, the company that localized it, NekoNyan, is pretty new so I believe you should support them if you want to see more from them. This is assuming their translations are good. The fact that they're bringing games over uncensored and with no DRM is still a great thing though. We can shit on Sekai and ward people off all day but not supporting their competition isn't going to help at all either.
One nice thing about this VN is all the options it has that you would expect more VNs to have. Ability to change the font, font color, read text color, and the colored text boxed. You can also make it so the text box appears below the CG instead of on the CG like it normally does. You can see this in the third image. Another nice thing is that every time the songs change, it tells you what song is playing (you can adjust how long the notifications stays on the screen too.). You can turn it off though. I'm guessing they took a lot of pride in the music they made.

Unteralterbach will always be the best western VN. It's genuinely well written and funny, and one of the things I appreciate most about it is that it doesn't try to emulate the japanese style of art and humor like most westen VNs do. It is unapologetically german, and is much the better for it.

For those who have tried using a tablet to read VNs, how did that go for you? I used a cheap NuVision 8-inch Full HD PC Tablet (http://a.co/gaoP19G [goes for $64 as of now]) to read VNs. Princess Maker 2 worked pretty fine on it though Funbag Fantasy had a problem where the character CG would disappear, then the background, and then everything. So I had to save often. Meanwhile Demonbane couldn't display the animated videos which is what stopped me from playing it. It was comfy and great to read on when it did work properly but annoying when it didn't. Doesn't help that Windows 10 takes up too much memory.

As much as I liked it Tsujidou Road does suffer a bit from living in Majikoi's shadow That and the MC being egregiously pussy in Ai's route
From what I can tell the sequel seems to have more of the group banter/dynamic that made Majikoi so good and less off the Ai intruding in every other fucking route to the degree her appearance in Maki's is better than her own
Pity the delinquent element got downplayed or skipped over in some of Ai's h-scenes goddamit more than I'd hoped.
Also they missed a good opportunity in Ai's route to have the MC pull a Grease and go full delinquent when he has the barganing conversation with Ai, it would have fit perfectly with the earlier fireworks shenanigans Really the MC needed at least some level of growth even if his autism was comedic.
As much as I complain I still loved it maki best girl At least which has a route in the first game

Zero was shit so if it's true that the anime isn't faithful, that's likely a good thing. The biggest problem though is that the most important part of the plot is the worst part of the entire VN, and I can't see them changing that at all. In case you haven't heard about it yet, let me spoil the ending: The ending is that he simply goes back to where the whole Zero story split off, so to the point where the bonus episode changed shit. It then continues as normal. The entirety of Zero is completely pointless aside from Okabe getting a new waifu in the dead-Kurisu timeline. The only thing it does is cheapen the characters of the first Steins Gate by making them weak willed. Mayu-something doesn't just slap Okabe, now we need to go on a months long trip back just to end up where we started so that she can slap him. Obviously this retcons their personalities from the first one.
As for whether you should finish the VN, who cares, really? Would you prefer to react by going "they changed this from the VN" or "I wonder if this was changed from the VN"?

VNs are usually more expensive in Japan than in the US. Over there they sell for around 40 - 70 dollars. But they usually come with other things like body pillows or wallscroll. Those sets range from 80 - 120 dollars. Meanwhile VNs go range from 15 - 60 dollars. On sale they're like 5 - 20 dollars. Yet they're still making enough profit bringing them over.

I've been wondering if I should make a post here about this but the thread's gonna die soon so I might as well. It's a game that has minor VN elements, kinda like Dang-it Ron Paul.
I've been laying Lobotomy Corp, basic premise is that of SCP in that you harbor dangerous anomalies and gather energy from them while studying them. Mayhem breaks out when they breech containment and you'll probably be losing people regularly. The gameplay I enjoy, farming up enough boxes to get the extra equipment and then the new anomaly the next day. The translation is… a korean trying to translate native hangul into English without an editor. It's rough and it went through early access before this but it's hit 1.0 and they redesigned most of the things from what I understand. They might spring for a better editor in the future but we'll see.
The Anomalies themselves are a mix of items that can help you like give bonus stats or keep people save but usually at the cost of something, like their sanity or making all the Anomalies breech if you stay in too long and monsters that you need to farm energy off of but also have a variety of effects. There's a few good ones like Little Red Riding Hooded Mercenary who'll breech if Big and Might be Bad Wolf goes by. She can also be hired to get any that have gotten out but again, she runs into Wolf she goes crazy. The one I hope to meet is called The Knight of Despair and although she's high tier, she also gives a blessing to a character. If she breeches containment it's a bit of a pain to hunt her but her character design is something I really like. There's also a magical girl that can help but can also hinder.
That's what I've been going through instead of Tsujidou-san. Even if you don't play it, if you're into SCP or the like and wanna check out the different Anomalies then it's worth consulting the wiki, that and for the actual abilities of monsters between the broken english.

They never learn from their mistakes either. The only thing I can say that's positive about them is that they're bringing more attention to VNs. But anything becoming bigger in the west isn't something to be glad about in current year due to various reasons.

MangaGamer is the only place to buy VNs if you're looking to buy. Maybe DLsite but those aren't all in English and aren't usually given a fresh Decensoring treatment. Kyonyuu Fantasy never looked so good as it does from them.
They've also got a great collection ranging from Fata Morgana and Kara no Shoujo (Kara no Shoujo 2 can CHOKE ON DEATH I HATE YOU) to famous and indie nukige and more.
A really cheap but very well done VN was Crimson Gray I personally liked. Best yandere vn I've come across so far and it's indie. You also have Rance which is, well, Rance, and Kuroinu to look at if you like gangbangs and crap endings. If I keep going I'm gonna sound like a shill. They're good that's all. I'm really enjoying it so far, but I've also had to skip a few exchanges because the humor, although witty, does get rather long in the tooth. It's definitely a SOL style game that takes its time at its own pace, likely even moreso due to the huge cast of characters involved and each of their interactions.
Plus there's this itching urgency inside me while I play it. I'm so used to Nocturne-teir storytelling that I keep waiting for the other shoe to drop and speculating which character will be the traitor, how many will try to kill the other one, who's gonna attempt to rape who, etc. I'm just not used to fun that wasn't a facade for something grotesque or horrific happening soon.
Only other vns I play are nukige and BOY does that make this feel even longer. Still fun so far, though. I hope it doesn't wear out its welcome for me like it did for you anon. Sorry to hear that.

Utsuge is the tag you want then. It's for VNs made to depress people. Kara no Shoujo, Subahibi, Narcissu, Fata Morgana, Sekien no Inganock, Corpse Party, and Symphonic Rain are considered pretty depressing VNs from what I've heard. I also always hear good things about the first Kara no Shoujo as well. And from my experience, Corpse Party was a fun, miserable ride.

What is with this company and making incredibly long prologues? This is unbelievable.
That said, as much as I like Majikoi (still in prologue there, too, though I've gotten more choices) I'm starting to see what anon's problem with it was regarding the humor. Junai Road has plenty of humor as well but it's given a LOT more breathing room. Majikoi is certainly a comedy but Junai isn't really a comedy in the same sense. It spends time developing drama and makes you feel conflicted about the characters, ever reminding you that these cute girls are indeed thugs and they will be just as cruel as any gangbanger.
However the comical aspects come when the two elements of cute girl and violent thug come into contrast, like with how adorable best girl Maki is (when she's not going to eat your screams) or how adorably silly Renna can be (when she's not humiliating a girl and forcing her to lick her shoe in public). The other characters as well, especially miss "I'm gonna dislocate your hips and make you into a loose woman" which, man, talking about making a cancerous first impression.
Or that adorable blue loli who has this semi-Master Blaster relationship with the freakish giant.
Contrast is the overall theme of Junai Road and it shows in absolutely everything from the setting (a quiet little oceanside town that's also home to the biggest gangwar in recent history) to the heroines (cutiest of pies also being vicious animals except for Ai ) to the other characters (the sister's dual nature is hilariously on the nose with the theme) and even to the protagonist himself who, for once, has a reason for being a heroic near-pacifist who's extra calm and nice - and you can even see why the girls would find him attractive in a world otherwise filled with either cowards or victimizers.
Majikoi has much more to it that I haven't gotten to, I'm sure, but I'm several hours very deep into each game's prologue and I have to say that the comedy, albeit top notch in a way I have never seen before, gets exhausting, and the constant theme of contrast in Junai Road makes it more interesting to me. That and the protagonist doesn't have a stupid lol randum hermit crab fetish.
