I'd be surprised if anyone at Nintendo still cares about it. The hype died, they made fat dosh from when literally fucking everyone across the world and their dogs played it last year. Pokemon is actually pretty intimidating to a lot of normalfags, mostly because they'll hear some autist obsess over IVs, type weaknesses and the like. A lot of them that I know, at least, think that it's impossible to get into unless you've played since the early days when it was simpler. Basically mistaking "competitive Pokemon" with the core game.

A battle system that is pretty much rock paper scissors, some pokemon are better stat wise than others, and that you can train the little monsters since gen 1 even if it has all gotten a bit more complex since then (but really it hasn't changed much since Gen 3 beyond adding a few dumb things).
Intimidating is the wrong word. Boring and a huge time sink are the real words you'd want to use. Getting the right pokemon, getting the right moves on it, and training it in levels and battle exp is rather time consuming for the level of reward you can maybe get at the end of it all. It doesn't help that out of the ways you can shrink the time requirement (various drugs and now boring ass mini games) it still takes tons of hours as well. After all you aren't getting much of a reward if out of the 800 some odd pokemon you choose only a small % of them are actually able to handle a real battle. Cause pokemon is a imbalanced piece of shit for a competitive game (cause of course it is when there are 800 of the things).
Thankfully stuff like pokemon showdown is around to cut all of the shitty work out of pokemon and get to the good stuff.

This right here. The time sink makes no sense for the kind of game it is. The PvE end game, such as the Battle Tower, is also an unbalanced piece of RNG garbage even with the most ideal setup.

Definitely the latter. Fire Emblem Heroes is also mobileshit and its way more coherent and successful than PokeGo is. Also Niantic is basically (((Google))), which already should have been a red flag from the get go. The game was at its best at release, and since then Niantic has dedicated most of its time to ruining their money printing machine in as many ways as humanly possible.
The game just isn't fucking fun.
