Wide hallways? Oh, yeah, don't wanna have any scary, large but well designed levels

>Had a great sense of progression and introduction of weapons/enemy types

Quake had that too.

>Used puzzles and platforming to break up the gameplay

It had puzzles, OK. But Quake's platforming was inherently superior, and it wasn't even necessary there, but it felt goddamn satisfying.

>Actually knew what it was doing and where to place ammo, enemies, halways, ect in such a way to make each interaction feel different

Again, just context. Quake and DOOM just threw everything around and that still had more freedom to execute around. The going-fast part on HL was just left there accidentally until HL2.

And HL1 is probably superior to any of it's clones like COD or Halo, or even it's own sequel. But you could only say it was the best FPS ever like you could say TLOU is the best TPS ever.

I'ma be honest: I look back on Half Life and I can't remember it having a "good part". It might have been better if I'd played on medium instead of hard.

>Black Mesa/Anomalous Materials

Setup and showing off the engine. Great for your first playthrough but turns replaying the game into a massive annoyance

>Unforeseen Consequences/Office Complex

Simple and basic, good atmosphere. The enemies are too damn easy though, even on hard mode; headcrabs can only hit you if they surprise you, Zombies can be taken out with just the crowbar with no effort, and every other enemy has a massive delay on their attacks, making them pathetically easy to murder.

>We've Got Hostiles

And now we see the other side of the "too easy enemies" coin. The soldiers have way too much health and fire way too accurately with hitscan attacks. The only reasonable way to fight these guys is to basically lame their AI by popping around corners with a shotgun or abusing the fuck out of tripmines. The MP5 is fucking useless because it becomes 2% accurate at any distance longer than 5 feet, and you don't really have any better weapons at this point except the revolver, and ammo for that is more than a little hard to come by, and even then you need headshots. Maybe this would have been OK if I was playing on medium but on hard this is just fucking annoying.

>Blast Pit

This gimmick was really fucking annoying and the enemies are back to being easy as fuck

>Power Up

More easy enemies. Some exciting bits with the giant flamethrower guy though. Soldiers still suck to fight

>On A Rail

Plus side: the combat here is probably as on-point as it's going to get, and the MP5 grenades even the odds a lot between you and the soldiers. The enemy variety is very good and the situations you fight in are interesting. Minus: this fucking train is a bag of ass and you have to use it throughout the chapter unless you exploit glitches.

>Apprehension

You know what fucking sucks? Platforming in first person. The fights with the ninjas are interesting though

>Residue Processing

Oh yay, just as the weapons were getting interesting they all get taken away. Also whose idea was it to put invisible landmines everywhere? The signs are not helpful. Also more first person platforming.

>Questionable Ethics

This area is interesting from a story prospective, and the aliens are actually threatening now, so fighting them becomes more fun. Escorting scientists sucks and will always suck though.

>Surface Tension/Forget About Freeman

Now that we actually have a good arsenal, fighting the soldiers is actually kind of exciting. They still have way too damn much health though

>Lambda Core

I barely remember anything about this other than the portal bit which was kinda cool.

>Xen and everything else

Oh god no. Everyone hates Xen and they are very right to do so. It combines all the worst elements of the game thus far; half the enemies are ridiculously easy and the other half are retarded bullet sponges, there's first person platforming everywhere, and the bosses are also unthreatening bullet sponges.

So yeah this game wasn't bad but it got way too bogged down in first person platforming, terrible gimmicks, and boring weapons; all the interesting weapons either sucked or never gave you any ammo.

Just use the fucking pistol like everyone else, that shit is super accurate and does a fuckton of damage if you can aim worth a shit, the MP5 does fuckall for damage, even the pistol in rapid fire mode does more damage than it, only the grenades are good and even then only for minibosses.

It's really not that difficult. I actually like first person platforming. It's pretty fun in games like Quake and Tribes that give their player mechanics to control themselves in the air, and it's really not that bad in Half-Life. But the Half-Life isn't about that, it's about something familiar, something safe: the giant secret research facility, but the things goes wrong and Black Mesa becomes the most dangerous place on Earth! The whole facility is being tearing apart, slowly dying. And this is the key point! We trapped, we have to find a way out, we have to bring help, but it's all useless, this whole place is against us, the facility wants to swallow us, kill us, we are trapped in its surrealistic corridors. Everybody is going crazy, people die everywhere, soldiers kill innocent scientists. BUT step by step we outsmart this horrible place, we go further and further, trying to escape. To me it's a perfect case study of a game in progress. A lot of people still don't understand how games are made and how cut content works. Most people lament cut content, wishing what was removed was left in (hl2 sees a lot of wishing about this stuff.) The HL alpha is great because you can see clearly what became elements in the final game and what influenced other parts of it, how it was polished up for release to be better and better, and how much content from such a short demo eventually ended up spanning across the fairly long SP campaign in HL1.

>>14586644

In the case of HL2 the original plot and the whole atmosphere had changed during the development and many still mad at Valve for ruining that dark depressing style and want to restore the way game intended to look like.

But for the HL1 it went more smoothly, they really polished that horrible alpha and cut what they didn't need. Yes, they cut a few monsters and we'll never see a scene of Mr. Friendly raping Freeman, but at least they left almost all cut content in the game folder.

304aa5 No.14586752

>>14586594

Deus Ex, maybe? I'm not sure what exactly you're looking for.

eedec5 No.14586757

>>14586709

For the sake of allegory, lets talk about Mr. Friendly in comparison to the cut content of HL2. The way Mr. Friendly was described to work was to pin the player and probe them with his dick, sort of like a really aggressive dog in heat. He was implemented, functional, but think about how it must feel to round a corner and have one latch onto you and you just can't move period. Not much you can do. A lot of modern games have experimented with this sort of stuff and usually end up with requiring the player to preform a quick time event to break the hold - something like tapping a button or wiggling a stick - hardly very fun.

Designers like the concept of a player being trapped and understand it must elicit a type of fearful reaction, and noone has managed to implement it correctly. HL2 has a well documented case of an enemy type just "not being fun" which is the hydra. Cool, conceptually cool, but not fun at all to fight. HL2 had a lot of cut content. We all know because they ended up making a 6 hour game and another 10 hour game with all the content cut but only after a few years of refining it, and it wasn't even the full story - we're still missing a big chunk.

What we got in HL2 was the best they could put together for that original part of the story. It had its flaws, but it was large chunks of that beta fleshed out, optimized, and refined into something playable and pretty good for the most part. The cut content is interesting and notably different in tone but I think wishing for something like that is pointless. A lot of the overbearing in your face elements were toned down to background elements which does fit the HL2 style pretty well.

It's a little difficult (way less so than hammer) but once you remember the binds (wasd to move, C to clip, V to vertex, RMB to free look, MMB to pan) you'll be churning out maps incredibly quickly. The editor has simultaneously the fastest and also the best 3D editing tools I've ever seen. You'll be iterating insanely quickly. I think it's getting support for HL1 if it doesn't have it already.

The zombie marines in that game are portrayed as maintaining all of their tactical acumen but in terms of actual game design are nowhere near as intelligent as Half-Life 1 marines. Maybe it's somehow related to physical or mental conditioning that allows them to become merely brainwashed instead of braindead, who knows, I'm not about to argue lore in Doom. Clearly the former humans in classic Doom maintained the motor skills and cause-and-effect thought processes necessary to know how to shoot a gun at someone, so there's that.

Because I tried that and it didn't work too good, you need like 5 or 6 headshots to kill one of the fuckers, and the only times they don't move is when they're shooting at you, which means either you're going to take shitloads of hitscan attacks or you have to hit a tiny moving target. And this was Goldsource movement speed and jerkiness so they weren't predictable moving targets either, like the Combine are.

Regen health is lazy.

Here is a list of things that you don't have to do, as a game designer, when you implement regen health:

>Place healing throughout the map in a way that doesn't make the game too easy, but also doesn't make it unfair on the player

>Design enemies that can't hit you with cheap shots because those cheap shots can't just be instantly recovered from

>Implement any kind of system that prevents autosaves from being made in an unwinnable situation, IE undodgable projectile is headed for you, autosave is made right before it hits.

>Design levels to allow players to navigate them with minimal damage

Etcetera. Of course the implementation of regen health also means that the player can play carelessly because they never have to worry about when their next heal is coming. There also is no such thing as a "war of attrition" scenario with regen health; being stuck in a hostile area with no health packs is no problem at all when you don't need them. The only way to really ramp up the difficulty in a regen health situation is to either introduce enemies that can disable your regen health or start throwing in cheap instakill bullshit.

The only time regen health is acceptable in my opinion is when you are making a highly tempo-based game where you do not want to break flow by forcing the player to health pack hunt, or play super-carefully when low health. Mirror's Edge may have gotten many things wrong, but regen health was the appropriate choice for that game. Another good example is Doom 2016, which didn't technically have regen health, but since enemies turn into health pinatas when you're low health, it might as well be regen. But that works for Doom 2016 because being able to stay constantly in the fray is a PLUS for a game like that. Of course, since most devs are fucking lazy, they generally just throw regen into slow-paced shooters to avoid having to do level design work to the detriment of the players. This is a practice that should never be encouraged.

Not really, I just don't give enough of a fuck to explore vents in their levels to find a stupid Doomguy bobblehead. Classic Doom was also about exploring the levels and health, guns and powerups were great rewards for doing so. The levels feel much more segregated into "Here's the explorey part and here's the shooty part" instead of feeling organic like many of the classic levels.

halo is a genuinely good game though, it has a great setting and feels fun to explore. as a shooting game i find it very average but as an exploration game i feel it rivals ocarina of time, which i also consider to have great locations. you are just a contrarian
