It's an ok game.

The game is pretty good, it has its flaws like some wonky bosses and some areas feel too small or unfinished, but the gameplay, music and art is solid, and the plot while nothing special is nice. It is more of a case of the sum of the whole being better than the individual parts in my opinion. It is not revolutionary nor it is a masterpiece, it is not Super Metroid, but what it does it does it really well and I think, even if it sound kind of bullshit, "soul" so to speak, it is evident that it was made with care and attention, and it is quite longer that it seems at first glance. It also isn't really popular. In fact I was surprised of how little it had sold despite being so well made and even spoken about by some e-celeb for what I heard. Perhaps the hate it is more a reactionary response to an over-positive first reception and exaggeration of its qualities.

Now, when it comes to tumblr pandering, it is easy to miss and not even that explicit. At the top of my head only the Grey Wanderer has an explicitly lesbian lover, which is dead by the time of the game. The thing about the blacksmith is that you can kill him and is given as a valid ending, not even evil, just the saddest of the two, and him being homosexual is only implied on the trophy you receive. The scene itself is just the blacksmith learning a new trade from the nailmaster after having perfected the art of nail-making, therefore finding a new purpose in life. By the by, the name of the trophy is "Happy Couple", so it easy hints of an homosexual relationship (although I'll say it stills leaves space for just a non gay couple, just friends, but I may be grasping at straws here).

Now the thing about the protagonist being genderless as pandering to tumblr is the fucking bullshit and I wouldn't be surprised if anons are spreading the lie just to discredit the game. The reason he is genderless is he is a creature created by the late king, a god, using the void, darkness and source of infinite life. He made sure Hollow Knight had no mouth, will, feelings or desires so he only obeyed, a golem or robot basically. Infact the main character is just one of many, and no even the perfect hollow knight that the king choose to seal the Radiance. Therefore he has no gender as the main character isn't really a "human being" so to speak. Of course the king fucked up and the Hollow Knights end up developing will and consciousness as well as desires, ergo becoming imperfect vessels. The fact that your halfsister, Hornet, daughter of the king and the queen of beast, is called "you gendered sister" is because she is a real union of two living beings, while you are more of a artificial construct of darkness and light.

There is no really anything else. It has one explicit dike character and one implicit faggot. There is no comment about oppression, right or wrong sexuality nor way of thinking nor politics. Actually, I must correct myself, there may be another one, but it is another hint of pandering, but is not conclusive. There is a character called Cloth. You find her multiple times through the game and if you follow her storyline to the end, she sacrifices herself for you, dying. You can speak with her soul or dream remnants or whatever and you discover she wanted to have a glorious death and reunite with Nola. Now, who is this Nola is never said. Nor if it is a he or she, neither what was it relationship with Cloth. But it seems Cloth was a baker's character first proposed as male, and then turned into female. This is not damning by itself but is something.

As a counterpoint, at the beginning of the game you meet a happy straight couple which are happily together and which storyline has a perfect happy ending. So if there is pandering, I would say it is not maliciously or cheaply done. At least in my opinion.

The thing with Grey Mourner is that she is a backer's character. So actually it may had been idea of the original creator to make her lesbian, can't say for sure yet. The link you posted before had at the trivia section a link to the reddit comment where the developers said she was designed by one of the backer. Now, the backer seen to be chinese or something, so I would find weird he had come up with the idea of making her a dike, but I cannot say for sure.

The Nailmaster is the only one that kind of fits, but it doesn't even have any kind of social commentary, and is just implicit. If it weren't for the fucking trophy name it would be quite a lot easier to interpret as a man who abandoned his old purpose, nail fighting, after the tragic death of his brother to take a new one, creating art,and then deciding to help another man who had fulfilled his old dream, creating the best nail, to find a new one instead of just killing himself. Still, I may grant you this one kind of, as it may be a gay couple having a happy ending in post-apocalyptic bug kingdom, and therefore you may consider it pandering.
