It is cool, but the whole "gun that doesn't work as a gun" thing ruins it. The PE2 gunblade is the superior gunblade, because it is both a gun and a blade. Jetstream Sam's scabbard is the proper way to attach a gun to your weapon but not have it be able to shoot. It doesn't pretend to be a gun any more, it's just there to make the sword even swordier.

As a day to day use sure, but they're still issued and sometime used in CQC.
Bayonet usage against people was always very rare (against horses less so, but even that went away pretty fast), but it's one of the thing that no-one can decide to abandon because it's better to have a bayonet and never use it than need a bayonet and not have it.

The Gunblade was never intended to fire bullets. Pulling the trigger causes the blade to vibrate, and when timed correctly, can cause significantly more damage to a target. Gunblades in this context are separate from pistol blades because a pistol blade is intended to effectively be a projectile weapon with a fancy bayonet.
Again, this weapon was NEVER intended to actually fire. Squall's Revolver is essentially a stylized version of a cheaply-made vibroblade.

Lever repeating guns existed ("Lorenzoni" pattern pistols and rifles), cartridge guns existed, etc…
There were crazy good guns at the time but all were hand made, commissioned cost an arm and took an artisan maybe as much as a year to make.
The army issued matchlocked or flintlocked (mostly only the french because they were the only ones with special high quality flints quarry making them really reliable) because that was what could be "mass" produce, but it's not representative of technology or understanding of engineering.
