I remember trying (installing and running the game) multiple times on different occasions with each compatibility mode setting and never getting it to work. All I did this time was switch to windows 95 compatibility and Run as Admin and it works. Thanks for your help. I wouldn't have tried again if your post didn't imply someone out the was running it on 8.1.

That's because it's a known culprit that Explorer causes it.
People had to shut it down so that the color would look normal.

Pratically the entire SNES, Genesis and GBA libraries aged like fine wine, expecially the Genesis imho.
Let's talk about games that aged like dogshit instead:
I was replaying mafia 1 recently and while the driving mechanics are still fine, the gunplay feels absolutely horrible by today's standards. I also noticed this is a problem for most early 2000s Third Person Shooters.

There is a big difference between using proper joystick and mouse with fully cranked sensitivity. Me and my friend specifically played Freespace 2, I had mouse, buddy had basic joystick. He had no prior experience playing FS, but had played other flight sims, while I knew how the game works. I managed to beat him at the start but once he learned the ropes, he started get upper hand eventually. Not to say mouse isn't good, but there is a world of difference between that and a joystick.

I'd argue that both GDI and Nod were within acceptable limits of "good" in TD, but in TS both went into nightmare territory. I oppose the globalism of GDI in TD, but I also oppose the sheer propaganda/sadism put forth by Nod (ironically a real life globalist tactic.)
The Soviets being bad in RA1 goes without saying. Too bad they're the only faction to play as on any map without water.

I was saying you play as Soviets on any map that doesn't have water, and allies on any map with water due to OP cruisers. That's pretty much the only thing the allies have any real advantage in as both their ground and air power are a joke.

disc throwers mixed with other units are generally horde deterrents with lucky shots, and as far as i remember, they're effective against anything except air units and fast units. but since the discs don't explode unless they lost their momentum or unit, their range can be longer than usual, you can do with small squad of dt's some hit and run tactics, throw it right before on the ground, run away, rinse and repeat, you can thin enemy ranks well. paired with cliffs or hilly terrain, you can bombard enemy base farther. and in defensive purposes, you can put squad of dt's away from cliff and bombard enemies without getting hit. hence, you need to micromanage their actions.
