Which is a shame really, because even though I probably will never play FFXV for more than 5 minutes since it's probably trash, it still deserves to be preserved in history for all the hard work and effort that was put into it by hundreds of people. denuvo is based off of VMprotect, which in short runs your code in a virtual machine so you can't read it easily. Now the performance impact is in the range of 100-3000 times less performance, yes 3000 times slower. Because of this the virtual layer isn't used in the entire game but at certain "checkpoints" where the DRM layer checks to see if your game is legit. This is why in D2016 some people reported their performance dropping significantly at certain areas where there are no enemies, because that's where the dev decided to do their DRM check, which makes sense, best to do it where it won't fuck you in the middle of a fight. Now the implementation of this depends on the game, I can't remember which, but I think an MMO does a DRM check overlayed with denuvo each time you loaded an item in and out of inventory to stop cheating by hex editing.
