I've always thought Pokemon needed more competition to push it to be better. Unfortunately the only thing that really came close to that was Yokai Watch and I think it did influence Pokemon, but in a terrible way. U/SM felt like it was trying to imitate Yokai Watch through the anime and replacing endgame content with minigames. The Pokemon anime seems to have gotten the better end of this, though.

I agree, I've seen people say this before but it doesn't make sense to me.
You don't collect and raise different Navi, you just get one, and it's more just another character, it's not really a creature. I've heard people call Gash/Zatch bell a mon franchise as well and it's similar and I disagree with that for the same reasons (If you've ever only seen the anime for Gash you out it to yourself to read the manga, unironically the best completed long running battle shonen series ever made, but the anime adaption was trash and the dub was even worse. If you've never read/seen it at all, I highly recommend it, with the caveat that you need to know going in it only goes from "pretty good" to "fucking fantastic" once it switches from villian of the week to arc based a number of volumes in, which is also when the art starts to rapidly improve and the fights become more and more strategic)
I'd argue that both of those belong to a "battle partner" genre, alongside stuff like Shaman King, the Fate (I think, i've never seen it, but it pairs the fighters/"normal" humans up like that too right?) and Jojo from part 3 onwards. Digimon is sort of half and half

Alright I played a little to try it out. Here's some notes about the very early gameplay.
There's no explorable overworld, it's just UI.
Combat feels like Pokemon lite with classifications such as chinese food and what ingredient it is primarily made of.
Winning battles nets you the opponent's recipe and some ingredients and money.
Also, it's funny to note you name the dish before you make it into a Foodon.

Alright finally got into a battle. Already more stuff to do in this game. Seems like different toppings have different effects on different foodons, ketchup made Omelet's sour attacks stronger but when I used salt as a topping the defense went down. Egg and rice both healed FP. (fresh points I'm guessing)
As for the aid menu, it seems like it's random whether or not you get an effect or not but what I managed to get is: "yell" raised attack, "cheer" raised defense, "be cautious" raised evasion (that's what the 回 represented), "Watch carefully" doesn't seem to have any immediate effect because it doesn't give the "Your voice didn't reach your foodon" message but nothing happens.

If we're gonna be stretching, the 3 Garakuta Studio games all are kinda /mon/ games. Magic Pengel is a good monster raising game where you draw out the monsters and battle them. The combat is simple but focuses a lot on prediction.
The sequel, Graffiti Kingdom has a better drawing system but the gameplay isn't an RPG and instead a beat beat em up. A bit boring aside from drawing monsters.
The last Garakuta studio game, Lost Magic, also has you collecting monsters.

You have two options for scans in terms of release groups: NULL, which has done the entire manga, and Anime-destiny or A-Destiny, which has done volume 18 onwards.
The image quality of both is pretty much even (worth noting the image quality starts out rough but improves the further in you get), the main difference is that NULL has better typsetting, and more natural sounding english, but it has less strictly accurate translations, wheras A-destiny is more awkwardly worded. but is more accurrate. I recommend NULL, with the caveat that you, as you read, have this pastebin with you: https://pastebin.com/UXMzLTCb, which includes both actual translation corrections and just random bad grammer that should be reworded. You can find NULL's scans via their site (http://www.n-u-l-l.net/), or on mangasaurus (http://mangasaurus.com/manga/651/konjiki-no-gash)
The other option is the entire manga was storytimed on halfchan's /a/ board, and there is a lot of neat disscusion that went on as it was dumped (though also the occasional spoiler), which is also where the translation corrections come from. There was also a rar from that that included a bunch of goodies, such as fanart, the aniime OST (since the OST froom the anime is really good, unllike the rest of the anime), super high res scans for the last few chapters, reaction images (which the series is a fucking goldmine for) and most importantly, some videos that you now can't find anywhere else on the internet that sync up key scenes from the manga that the anime ruiined or never adapted set to be timed with the anime OST, which are really, really cool.

In FFT, you can get random Chocobos that will show up in your party. They're pretty useless depending on your build and they breed like fucking crazy, causing your party slots to fill up. Later on, you can capture all kinds of different monsters. But the thing about monster types in FFT is that they can't learn any new abilities, switch their jobs or have equipment. So unless you're doing a monster challenge run (or you have Construct 8, the only useful monster), they're pretty much useless.

The main thing I don't like about Izanagi is that he sucks beyond the first dungeon. I kinda wish he (Persona 4's starter persona) stayed more useful throughout the game. Kinda like the starter pokemon in Pokemon games, or SMT Nocturne's first demon (Megidoloan Pixie).
He only became good imo after a bunch of tedious fusing. I finally fused one last month with Primal Force, Power Charge, Ali Dance, Absorb Wind, Cleave, Tarukaja, Rakukaja, and Rakunda.
I'm having a similar trouble with Mitey (from Ni no Kuni) right now. I wanna keep the little guy all way to the end, but I also hear that his final forms are statistically some of the weakest in the game.

The wheel focused more on setting up outside of combat while the tactics grid focuses more on the combat itself. You have to actually move your Youkai around to gain spirit energy and some moves can make parts of the grid dangerous for several turns. You can't just rotate out of strong moves either since moving Youkai has a cooldown. It doesn't really make the combat a whole lot more difficult, but it's more involved and more punishing than the wheel.
