d99959 No.14406138

Kenshi update is out on the experimental branch.

>what is Kenshi?

A squad-based RPG with buildable settlements, robot skeletons, and a ridiculously large non-procedural map where nobody cares about you and you'll probably starve to death in the desert or get your legs eaten by frogmen. Aesthetically it's somewhere between Desert Punk, Morrowind and feudal Japan. It also has some pretty great lore if you're into that sort of thing.

New features

>when limbs drop below -100, they become amputated

>you can replace them with robot limbs as prosthetics

>dogs will pick up, carry around, and eat severed limbs

>crossbows added, they can friendly fire

>there are crossbow shops now

>perception and precision stats added for crossbow use

>crossbow crafting skill added

>lockpicking is now its own skill, thievery will level faster to compensate

>blood effects on people and on the ground, people crawling and bleeding will leave behind "slug trails" of blood

>they merged that item icon mod into the main game

>new facial hair and shit, new Hiver models

>can sneak around on the ground while playing dead

>tent blueprints for cozy innadesert camping and also protection from acid rain

>bandits will eat your dog

>fog islands now have tons of resources, you should move your base there, it's a really nice place to live

>more xp from fighting while outnumbered

>chance of death from combat is generally higher because not enough people were dying

>campfire will be worked automatically

>idle people in your settlement will find a chair and sit there, now you don't have to assign them a sit task at the end of their work queue for your comfy cornerclub to be populated

>armor and weapons are a quarter of the price they were before, because everyone was just stealing shit and nobody bought anything

>trade profits rebalanced, distance between towns matters more now

>a shitload of other tweaks

>some bugfixes

>why is there a general?

We had them before, and now there's a big update.

>What's still missing that makes it early access?

The bottom right quarter of the map and maybe some luxury features. But given that they said that amputation and crossbows wouldn't even make it into the game until long after release if at all, it looks pretty close to done.

So does the game still run bad and have memory loss out the ass?

Weapons sell for less, although it's not a 75% reduction. It'll be harder to get rich, though.

It still runs like ass for me, but I'm using a first-gen i7 and the game has always been CPU bound. I'm running into a different issue right now though, clothing models are all artifacting pretty badly regardless of what my graphics settings are.

We'll probably see a proper optimization patch along with or after the final map release.

>stories

My last game, I had just watched Seven Samurai, so I took the start that gives you five guys but no cash, scraped together funds, hired two more, and wandered the desert in search of justice. I named them all after the samurai in the movie and gave them poses and weapons to match. Because they clearly needed a village to defend, I eventually hired a bunch more peasants, put them in a peasant squad, and set up an outpost in the blue sand area east of the Great Desert. Incidentally, that area is also infested with Beak Things, who did an excellent job of regularly killing off tax collectors who tried to visit me. I didn't make much money out there, but it was self-sufficient and I got it to grow pretty big. With constant attacks from the wildlife, my original peasants were all at 40 or so toughness by the time I decided to abandon the town and move into the Great Desert. I had also ended up with so many peasants that it took multiple squads to manage them - crafters went in peasants, farmers had their own squad, and I had a bunch of "freed" slaves that I made keep their shackles on. They worked the mines and refineries and did all the hauling. I also gathered a couple of skeletons to use as monks and set up a robodojo.

I should actually revert to the last version and take some pictures of the town I had. It wasn't finished, I wanted all the peasants to have small houses and the slaves to live in metal shacks, and there was a shop and a bar. I used the dev menu to redirect a nearby road into town, so I had a fair number of slavers, bandits, caravans, and armies wandering through and buying rum at the bar or attacking me. The town didn't actually have any iron, so I set up a slave camp just outside but close enough that it was counted as part of the main settlement, posted some guards outside and made slaves mine and refine iron, then would manually use a runner to ferry the plates into town. Even got it looking nice and squalid, that's the 4th pic in the OP.

There were a few adventures, mainly revolving around theft. I had a glorious final stand on a massive bridge deep into cannibal territory, where Shek bandits with massive swords kept swarming my squad. A few people would sleep to heal while the others defended them. Occasionally some weak cannibals would sweep through or bonedogs would attack. It took two days to slowly retreat across the bridge to the lab we were there for in the first place. I had Kikuchiyo sneak in and promptly discovered why it was referred to on the map as "Suspicious Lab". We got out fast.

There was also that time Kikuchiyo ended up being followed and constantly guarded by several dozen ancient skeletons whose programming was bugged. Tried to use them as meat shields for an open attack on the Free Empire armory, but sadly it didn't work out. I retrieved a few that weren't killed and tried to use the prisoner recruitment mod so I could get more robomonks, but that didn't work either, so I had them hang around my settlement until we abandoned it. I locked them in cages to sit there forever until a new master comes along.

Still not my fetish though, I just enjoy despair, and a race of frail, pathetic machines designed for a utopian society now forced to dwell in the dirt with barbarous savages, unable to remember the people and nation they were once so devoted to, fits this for me. If that's still not to your taste though there are always the Turkish deep ones and cannibal gourd people that I have also developed but people seem to like a lot less, probably because they are not pretty.

Lots of desert, lots of UC territory, some chokepoints held by the Holy Nation, a wasteland with a bunch of bandits and a bandit fort, some nasty acid rain areas with nice loot, a Skeleton city, massive chunks of a broken spaceship, fossilized (or metal) tentacles the size of an entire town

>>14409320

Kinda, but fairly low-tech in the sense that you can build diesel generators and make biofuel for them but everyone fights with swords, clubs, and now crossbows.

Some people say that the game is post-apocalyptic. The dev says it isn't. In reality, there have been at least two apocalypses, possibly three.

d8d8fc No.14409969

Oh yeah my squads.

Made a guy with a dog who rolled the name Blacksheep. Which seemed fitting because I am doing a martial arts playthrough. Started in the area between the holy nation and the united cities, got my asskicked and almost died. I had to carry my puppy and he was getting worse, and I was about to crit again.

I saw a squad of holy nation troops run into some United cities samurai, then some more bonedogs joined. I waited and just before I was about to pass out I was able to get a med kit. I had to sit around for a day until my pup healed though.

I made my way through some UC territory but didn't find much to do, picked up Rane the Giant, got beep and some shyke chick from the Mogrel, then had to save them from fogmen, watched as my now adult dog outright kills bandits and hives who have no or shitty armor.

Its going well.

I love punching people, I never use armor, only the Gi, and I can dodge just about anything so far. makes it hard to counter. Rane it the heavy and is starting to get to the point where she can swing and take out multiple low rank enemies. The dog though man. He just rips guys up, if they drop they just start to bleed out. Plus hes tough as shit because animals don't really do the dodge thing.

I took out the Dust kind and am trying to think of other shit to do.

On my other file I got a base going in cannibal territory but wouldn't you know it that was a terrible idea. IZUMIE-CHAN, NOOOO!!! So I think I might just break the shit down, pack up and head to greener pastures, or pastures that don't have guys who try to eat me.

There's like six different types with different skills. Junkbows and Toothpicks are good for throwing a bunch of shitty bolts at people real quick, Springbats are short range but punch through armor, Rangers are the average crossbow, and Cross Eagles are sniper crossbows. There are also Old World Crossbows which are basically really good Ranger Crossbows.

I'm running a rock bottom character that's going to be a bounty hunter for a while, and as soon as I get a mech arm to replace the one I lost I'm getting a crossbow as my primary. Well not really as good as a Springbat. Basically

Toothpick- close range, fast reload, low penetration

Ranger- medium-long range, medium reload, medium penetration, low skill cap

08e66d No.14419396

>>14419382

It doesn't have to be as good as a Springbat, I fully understand the Springbat will deal far more damage to armored opponents, I just want to make sure I don't have to go through 60 toothpick bolts to take down a single enemy if they're wearing anything thicker than cloth armor (doing negligible damage to plate armored opponents would be perfectly understandable though)

I can do it easily with 5. It really depends on crops and how much money/food you have on hand. Desert settlements are objectively the comfiest, but you need to research enough to be able to make dustwiches for your main food. It's much easier if you buy a stormhouse in a city and keep your researcher there doing the basic and free techs, while the rest of the party keeps adventuring for money. Another major factor is simply how good your party is at combat - raids can really set back your production. During raids it might be a good idea to lock a sneaky guy inside your houses so he can patch the other villager up after the fact.

For an easier time, just do as much preparation as you can ahead of time, otherwise you could risk mass starvation.

Once opened, the stealing chances weren't 100% so I had Armor King notice my thief who then ran upstairs causing Armor King to do so as well, then he ran back downstairs to the safe and stole everything he could carry before Armor King got back.

Honestly the only thing that'd prevent theft is to have at least one guard specifically ignoring the player and keeping an eye on the valuables at all times.

Also there are spaceship parts and giant metal/robotic tentacles in some parts of the northeast. And don't forget that there are ruined highrises in some places, and the southern portions of the map have so much rebar sticking out of the ground that it looks like plants, until you zoom in

052bea No.14438550

Depends on what you try. My first time playing I didn't know what the fuck to do so I just started picking away at some wreckage and selling the copper I got from that to buy a house, then I autistically researched all the tier 1 techs in complete safety, going back to mine copper when I needed money. Don't ask me what I did after that; I'm still trying to figure it out.

From what I gather if you try to go out and kill shit as your way of progressing you'll end up dying alot until you know what you're doing.

6a7432 No.14438561

>>14438482

No.

Keep a medkit handy and don't go around fighting things that'll eat you when you're down or are strong enough to kill you before you can wake up.

Hire a bunch of shitty friends at 300 cats each, the more you have the better the chance early on that one of you will wake up in time to save the others.

66016e No.14438665

>>14438482

As an RPG its fairly unconventional. If you never want to worry about money again sneak around town for a while until your sneak is around 40, then pick store locks while no one is looking (sho-battai and bark are great places for this, heft not so much because there are a lot of NPCs). You can run a circle around the three towns selling the stuff you stole, where blueprints are the most efficient due to slot and weight, and stealing it back to sell elsewhere. If you get multiple teammates you can use them to distract the shop keepers and guards while others lock pick. If you do distract, watch the time because the store will lock you in and the npcs will suddenly move very likely busting you. There is a shinobi guild in Heft that has some training dummies you can put to good use as well. Good luck.

d81d15 No.14438823

>>14438482

The main point is you're going to get your ass kicked a lot early game, you're going to be down KO'ed and shit and hopefully not die. Losing is part of the early game. It is important to hire some friends so that if your bleeding out one of you will get up and medic the others after the enemy has moved on, otherwise your main guy might die. (5 man start is good for this, but not needed) 1 man can mine copper or iron or whatever to buy some recruits.

naganita with +50% vs animals for main weapon out doors really seems to me like a no-lose situation (also comes with no minuses to skills)

samuari clothpants - covers legs with some extra stomach protection, feels comfy

drifer's boots - again, so comfy

The lore of Kenshi is pretty good.

I don't obedience was an betrayal, I think Obedience was literally like its name.

Skeles went to war with someone, and created giant skele's, after they won they ordered them to march into a great metal furnace, which they did, where they then named it obedience.

Also there are definitely aliens, there were a ton of unused assets you could access earlier that were biological chests and furniture.

I don't think the races in Kenshi like Shek are alien, in fact given the lore and mythos of the Holy nation, Shek were more then likely engineered from Humans.

The world of Kenshi seems to be a planet where the rise and fall of civilizations equivelent to the grandeur of Rome, build, deteriorate then rebuild.

d99959 No.14455131

>>14454630

What if whoever manufactured the skellies were the ones who sent the giantskellies to their deaths, and the normal skeletons were worried enough to revolt, sparking a massive war, downfall of one of the empires, and birthing the Holy Nation's hatred of them?

What I can't figure out is what the role of Narko would be, given that he was a giant skelly, and undoubtedly real. Maybe one giant escaped the doom at Obedience and wreaked havok on the greenlanders, becoming a devil-figure in the process? Maybe that was what sparked the war?

7b703a No.14455290

>>14455131

The mythos of Narko and Okran are two deities who were originally one.

I take this to mean a group of people who were so advanced they were revered as Gods, but a philosophical difference made them split, I think one went in the direction of biological manipulation and the other of tech.

Which is why Skeles are abhorrent to Holy nation, but sheks are cursed beings that are in need of saving through hard labor.

Though the Holy nation religion is heavily manipulated to allow its rulers slavery, power and zealots I don't think its entirely accurate for how it depicts things.

However I think it has probably the best recorded history as many religious groups have in the past IRL about Rome and Babylon

I picked up a pretty interesting item out of an "armoury" today. I have not see it before iirc and the wiki didn't have any information on it or where the pattern can be bought. Check out that environmental, 7, yes 7 protected locations this thing gives.

I like the idea of the dust and leather coats, but they have such bad clipping issues with every single pair of pants I can't use them. I wish someone would create a pants item that's tight enough on the legs it won't clip through and make you look like you took a pair of scissors to the coat to cut out fashion holes or some shit

How is your base guys? I have build my first right here because it's got everything and it's close to 3 cities. Meat farming is a short walk into Hive territory, while the immediate area is filled with dust/starving/escaped bandits to skill up on.

And I decided to test whether lanterns are worth having a second time. The first time, I saw that I had a penalty and assumed it was the same as not having a lantern. This time, I actually bothered to look at the values. It seems penalties to perception, precision, crossbow skill, and accuracy are reduced, but not completely eliminated when you have a lantern. If the "charges" stat in the lantern's info window relates to how much light it gives off, with a default value of 20, then having five characters each equipped with a lantern and standing close enough together that the light radius completely envelops them should eliminate any penalties.

Final Judgement: A single lantern is good enough to reduce night/low-light penalties for your character, but not completely eliminate them, and the values stack the more people equipped with lanterns there are in a small area. Also, I would make a terrible game analyst.

I've still never seen one for sale in a hive village.

They're there, that for sure I am certain of because I'm in a hive village store with the trading screen open and I see two of them. They're not a guaranteed stock though, since about half an hour ago I was at this same shop and they didn't have it then.

Is there any endgame to this?

I played it a while back for about a day.

> recruit squad of 12

> skill up killing bandits

> steal high quality weapons and armor from World's end and Armor king

> steamroll everything in the map

> get bored and quit

Was I supposed to play this as an RPG or something?

79b699 No.14467093

>>14466777

No, this game just isn't suited to someone who looks up the easiest way to kill their own fun. I have a feeling your "about a day" was more like "about a week" and yes, after a full week the game gets boring and you will move on, I just recently restarted a new game because as open world rpg it's a lot of fun. Don't be made bro, nothing lasts forever.

Dude you are so amazing you did the whole game in a day congratulations on finding the easiest path to victory and flawlessly navigating your awesome 12 man squad to supremacy. You should do esports or speed runs to prove how awesome you are on youtube.

On behalf of the people who do play, and were satisfied with their first game and came back to play a second after a break, I apologize that your inability to find fun after "about a day" may have something to do with your small benis.

Well, losing doesn't have to be part of the early game if you know what to do.

Still, losing makes for a more interesting story in Kenshi than just winning everytime.

But losing doesn't necessarily mean the end, just like M&B.

You get up and learn from what happened and get better.

The holy nation is against them, after all, if thats a robotic arm wouldn't it be easy for the REST of you to be robotic???

Time to be purged darkone.

As for cannibals they will probably cut it off and throw it to the side.

Building a powerful team seemed like the obvious thing to do.

I ran around for hours trying to find interesting NPCs to talk to, quests to do or bosses to fight. There was a bit, but not much. I built a base, but it wasn't really a compelling game mode. There was one attack on my base, but I didn't want to sit around for hours waiting for another.

Apart from you being a fag, my point was to ask if there was something I'm was missing. It would appear the answer is no.

The faction leaders are pretty tough and killing/capturing them will get retaliatory raids sent to your base, from what I understand.

6a7432 No.14468189

It's funny that ordering someone to hold makes enemies immediately target them.

I'm pretty sure that since the game considers target acquisition to be an attack (hence enemies running towards you as soon as you give the order), ordering someone to hold position locks them in place but they continue to attempt and fail to acquire a target. These repeated attempts rapidly increase their threat, to use an MMO term, quickly drawing enemies towards them. It has to be the exact opposite of what passive mode was previously.

6a7432 No.14468683

New update, 0.98.7

-Characters now get covered in blood

-Animals stats are now reduced to 25% when you buy one. This is because animals grew into high stats by default, so they were overpowered because those high stats weren't earned through combat, just time. Now they have to be trained up like everybody else. This doesn't apply to strength and dex, so they still get big and strong naturally without training, just the skills need to be trained.

-Adult player dogs no longer play with limbs, though they still collect limbs and carry them around a bit, they eat them quickly and don't run off. Adult wild dogs still run off with limbs.

-it now takes about 20 seconds for a bandit to butcher your pet dog, so you have a chance to stop him

-Characters won't sit around idle if they are selected

-Being in HOLD mode while sneaking no longer ruins your sneaking

-Fixed "use turret" orders not working when too far away

-Changed the ranged combat target selection function to be more flexible, let me know if things improve or not with target selection

-Fixed a miscalculation in the strength XP gain rate for encumbered martial arts combat. It was like 10x too high, now it's the same rates as using a heavy weapon.

-Fixed the FCS character random weapon selection

-Possible missing wordswap fix

-AI improvements for town guards roaming too far from town

-Possible AI fix to help stop Shark getting wiped out by spiders

In one game I assassinated most of them while getting their high tier weapons.

Well fuck, turtle punching while encumbered is now nerfed.

>AI improvements for town guards roaming too far from town

I wonder if that will calm down Mongrel getting constantly attacked by fogmen?

It was probably added sometime late last year, but I'm not entirely sure. I only started playing again a week or two ago.

The encumberance nerf stings a bit, but ultimately all it means is that you've gotta punch more turtles.

6a7432 No.14468797

Eyegore is a Soldier Drone from the Southern Hives, and the general of the United Cities armies. According to the FCS he has 90's in all combat stats except for strength which is 99. If you kill him he's replaced in raids with elite hunters which have 75's.

Kind of disappointing, moon cleavers are outclassed by paladin's cross, edge 1 paladin's cross is overall superior to an edge 3 moon cleaver.

Instead of the bonus robot damage, moon cleavers should have a small bonus to head/limbs, like 5-10 percent.

I find it's hard to make proper loli because the face models are a bit rough especially female face 2 only really works if you want a brown QT which is cointuitive since it appears to be for super light skin. Female face 1 and 3 are ok though and with as many sliders as kenshi has you can really get a good variety. The only thing you could ask for is a buttock slider. hehe.
