It would be more accurate to say that they knew what their audience wanted, but have since shifted away from doing so because of politics. Practically every fucking show these days has a trap faggot. It's fucking jarring when almost every cute girls doing cute things show has to shoehorn in a yaoi fanservice, when they is clearly not what the audience is looking for if they're picking up a CGDCT show. Another example is how anything even slightly mainstream involving lolis will use loli fanservice to draw people in and then thump you over the head with 'lolis are bad and you should find an older girl (and have a bunch of kids because birthrates)'. Why the hell would you use lolis as your selling point when you're just going to beat the audience over the head with how your generic main character goes for the high school girl instead? That was clearly not what the audience was looking for going into it, and anyone that doesn't like loli will obviously not be watching the show in the first place. And of course, the 'main character's motivation is to make everyone live in peace and coexistence' theme that is everywhere. If Monster Girl Quest hadn't been a porn game, you can bet your ass it would be considered globalist propaganda because the entire story is about how a guy rebels against the Not-Christian faith stand-in to tear down all borders and promote race mixing.

Climate's fucked for magical reasons. A bunch of Tumblr kids get together to save the world via a piece of magical music, each of them with different musical talents. Main character is a chosen hero type born and bred for the purpose. That's not even the really impressive part. Accidental greatness happens. What is impressive is that the character is a "minority" - or at least a lighter shade of ethnic - and (like current year female characters) are verboten from being depicted as anything less than inspirational and shining examples of the best that humanity has to offer, and bravely facing and overcoming the horrible discrimination they face despite their perfection.
Character flaws are sweeping dogwhistle criticisms of entire races/cultures on the part of the author in current year+.

I'll give you an entire summary of the game, which will take a number of posts and is probably not what you wanted, but just in case anyone is curious.
Epilogue:
Magical global ~warming~ cooling is being caused by modern technology. A particular bloodline of half-fairies need to play a magical song once every couple generations to reset the world. If the song is not played at a particular time and place then the world will freeze over.
Chapter 1. Gathering Cancer:
When the game begins the party consists of Alto, the main character and member of the half-fairy bloodline, and Teagan, Alto's childhood friend and ultimately the game's "villain." The two go off on a quest to play the song that saves the world, though Teagan thinks the entire story of the song is a lie. She spends the beginning of the chapter trying to convince Alto to drop the quest and run away from her abusive family. Alto doesn't consider this an option and continues on the quest. The first party member they meet is Cancer Trap, also known as Saki. Saki just so happens to have a part of the sheet music for The Song that Saves the World (Also known as the World Tuning). Upon Teagan looking at it, she is suddenly convinced this whole Song the Save the World business might be real, as the sheet music seems supernaturally appealing to play.
Now with proof that the quest is real, Teagan asks Alto to think deeply on who should and should not join in on the quintet which will play The Song that Saves the World. Alto, naturally, allows the first two people who ask to join, both of whom are complete amateurs. The first is a violinist who doesn't know how to read sheet music and the second is a self-conscious singer who can barely make her voice heard.

Chapter 2. The First Attempt:
Despite Teagan warning Alto that perhaps picking up amateurs isn't the best idea when it comes to playing The Song that Saves the World, Alto keeps the loli-slut and worm colony (she's not a literal worm colony, it's just what anons started calling her because she demands being called by plural pronouns) in the quintet. Over the next week Teagan does her best to get the group ready to play The Song that Saves the World. The quintet fucks up The Song that Saves the World and end up summoning some kind of magical storm that almost kills everyone in the party.

It is here that Teagan rips up the sheet music to The Song that Saves the World. This is probably the only time Teagan does something wrong (in my opinion).
Chapter 3. Saki has AIDS and Fairies a Shit:
After Teagan verbally dismantles everyone in the party, the party splits up. Alto ends up bringing everyone back together, but Saki's Cancer AIDS begins to afflict him. To push back his death a few more months, he requires a special herb that grows in a long abandoned village. Along the way the party stumbles across a secret fairy village. It is there that it is more or less revealed that Alto has fairy blood in her because her ancestor was a rape baby from a war between humans and fairies some 1000 years ago. It is also revealed that the fairies have the ability to stop the coming apocalypse, but choose not to because human technology is haram. The fairy queen then gives the party the magic herb and the party leaves.

Chapter 4. Teagan did Nothing Wrong:
With the party almost fully restored, Alto goes to track down Teagan. The party races down to the docks where the whole game started and corner Teagan on the pier. Teagan refuses to go along with the idea of Playing the Song that Saves the World because all it will result in is Alto getting hurt again and again. Alto and friends, not enjoying that response, proceed to literally beat Teagan into submission. After this is probably the closest thing to a heart-to-heart conversation in the entire game. Alto screams and cries at Teagan, but does not allow Teagan to say anything in response. Throughout the rest of the game, Teagan tries her best to apologize for everything she did to Alto (even the things that made perfect sense).

Chapter 5. Our Hero, Everybody!:
With the sheet music to The Song that Saves the World destroyed, the party asks the fairies what to do, seeing as the Song that Saves the World has secretly been fairy magic the whole time. The Fairy Queen tells Alto that deep beneath the first dungeon in the game, there is a secret dungeon that leads to the ~hyperbolic time chamber~ ~space synagogue~ Uncommon Time, which is a pocket dimension created by Alto's ancestor that holds a magical-AI-copy of said ancestor. It is believed that the magical-AI-copy will be able to tell Alto how to recreate The Song that Saves the World.
After entering Uncommon Time alone (despite Teagan saying that's a really bad idea), Alto goes through a dream sequence where she fights her ~Persona~ darker parts of her psyche culminating in a 1v1 boss fight against herself in a mask. After dispatching the part of her that wants the world to end, the magic-AI-copy shows up to inform Alto that the reason why The Song that Saves the World failed:
Alto wanted it to fail.
Alto wanted all human life to cease.
Because the training she undertook to play The Song that Saves the World made her hands hurt.
The AI then informs Alto that the song itself isn't even special, the only thing that matters is that someone with fairy blood goes to the top of Metronome Tower and plays a really intense song written using magic ink. It is at this point Alto leaves Uncommon Time and tells the rest of the party what she learned (while still berating Teagan for being worried). The party then goes about collecting the ingredients to make magical ink to write the NEW Song that Saves the World.

Chapter 6. Remove Alto:
The last part of the game is essentially a slice of life segment about the party writing and preparing to play The New Song that Saves the World. Nothing especially important happens at this point except for the night before the party plays the song:
Standing outside the Metronome Tower (the place where The Song that Saves the World needs to be played) is Teagan. Teagan wants to talk to Alto and apologize for everything and anything she has done to Alto. It is at this point that we learn about Teagan's backstory. Teagan was essentially just your average kid until the day she spotted Alto. Alto is from the richest and most powerful noble family in the world, but despite all of this, Alto was quite melancholy. Teagan realizes that Alto has no friends and is lonely, so Teagan vows to become Alto's friend. After being caught by a guard, Teagan is banished from the Half-Fairy estate and extra guards are posted to ensure she never gets back in. Previous to this, Teagan heard that Alto needed a practice partner for her training to play The Song that Saves the World. As such, Teagan begs her family to pay for music lessons and a violin. After a while Teagan's parents cave to her demands and give Teagan lessons, which is quite odd in this world, as normally music lessons are for people who can use magic (Teagan is the only non-mage in the game). After a time Teagan becomes so undeniably good at the violin that she is recruited as Alto's practice partner.
It is at this point that Teagan asks Alto for forgiveness one last time.
Alto refuses.
Alto not only refuses, but goes on a diatribe about how forgiving people is a sign of weakness or even immorality.
Teagan, utterly defeated, just sighs and says "Fine." (Or something like that, I don't quite remember).
The next day the party climbs to the top of the tower, plays The New Song that Saves the World (which the audience doesn't get to hear), and save the world from a frozen apocalypse. Soon after, the game ends.
And THAT is the story of Uncommon Time.

That was just a joke anon, much like how many people joked that Aubery (the girl from the past) was actually a worm colony. Aubery isn't actually a worm colony and Duet anon (to my knowledge) is not trying to bang Feral. Instead I think he's engaged in something far more pointless in that (going off of what he said in the thread we were discussing Duet) he is trying to save Feral. I think Duet Anon was struck by how good the game becomes with just a simple tweak and so he (foolishly) believed that there is potential in Feral's abilities as a writer, if only she could be cleansed of her tumblrism. At least that's my theory. I don't really know one way or the other.
That being said, I'll get to work on the summary of Duet. Hopefully it doesn't take too long to finish.

Background:
Long ago (which is to say about 3 years ago), when /v/ first witnessed the ending of Uncommon Time and, more importantly, the "I will never forgive you" rant, many anons tried to give Teagan the game or ending she deserved. Although there were many attempts, something always felt off about each one. As one of the people who helped with the first Teagan Quest, there was a foolish attempt to essentially inverse the entire narrative. Turning Alto into a mustache twirling villain and Teagan into a paragon of virtue, rather than representing both of them as they truly were. I honestly walked away from most of the Teagan Quests when I realized most of the team didn't realize one simple truth:
No matter what, even after everything that happened in Uncommon Time, Teagan loves Alto. Even at the end of the game when Alto has already stated that she will never forgive Teagan, Teagan still wants Alto to leave the grasp of her abusive parents and to go and live a happy life.
It is this very concept of a tragic friendship that gave rise to the anon-written fanfic Pittura Ingamante:

A super short summary of the fanfic is thus: After the end of the game Teagan tries to help Alto, but ultimately the two come to the painful realization that neither can remain the friends they were at the beginning of the game. In the game, the magic-AI-clone convinced Alto that being spiteful is the same thing as having confidence; as such the new Alto is painful to be around for Teagan and so Teagan leaves, but even after leaving, Teagan still attempts to help Alto, but from the background. The ending of the fic is pretty bitter sweet but was ultimately the only conclusion one could reach from the "best" ending.
Pre-Duet Branch:
One thing most people (including myself) leave out of all tellings of Uncommon Time is that, in the early parts of the game, Teagan is a dick to Alto. A lot of Teagan and Alto's interactions are dedicated to Teagan calling Alto an idiot. It is somewhat implied that Teagan just views this as friendly banter while Alto takes it somewhat seriously. One thing that many people seem to forget (or perhaps don't realize) is that in the scene where Teagan gets drunk, she outright says that she sometimes regrets becoming Alto's friend (though I believe it is more that Teagan venting her about how things might have been better for her if she never met Alto, rather than an actual want to end her friendship with Alto).
I bring this up because Duet Anon, much like the anon who wrote Pittura Infamante, did not want to shy away from the good sides of Alto nor the bad sides of Teagan.

Duet Branch Part 1. A Moment to Think:
The Duet path leaves the canon path at the time Saki (Cancer Trap) is cured. Instead of leaving to track down Teagan, the party instead goes straight to the fairy forest to ask the Fairy Queen about how to get a new copy of The Song that Saves the World. They are told the same thing about how they need to visit Uncommon Time to talk to the magic-AI-clone. At this point the Fire Fairy (there's a fairy for each element) states that she wishes to escort the party to Uncommon Time.
As the party reaches the first dungeon, the scene changes to Teagan on the pier. As it turns out (which, it's mentioned at the beginning of the game) no ships are going in and out of the island because the ice has become too thick for ships to safely dock. Because of this, Teagan has a long time to think and ultimately realizes that she has abandoned her one and only friend. Suddenly disgusted with herself (and inexplicably gaining the face of a goblin), Teagan rushes off to find Alto.
Duet Branch Part 2. Philosophy in the House of the Space Jew:
In the Space Synagogue (which is the dungeon one must trek through to get to Uncommon Time) the Fire Fairy begins conversing with the other party members. She, in essence, pokes holes in the tumblrite philosophies of each member (either directly or indirectly). I cannot say for certain if I remember exactly what she said, but there is one conversation I do remember.
Before I discuss that, though, there is something I forgot to mention in the previous summary; Saki is the "adult" of the party, but really all he does is shrug and say "People should be able to do whatever they want!" Saki is actually the reason Alto goes into Uncommon Time alone in the canon route. When Teagan states that she wants to follow Alto into Uncommon Time, Saki stops her, stating that it is Alto's choice to go on alone and Teagan should learn to respect Alto's wishes (although the last time Teagan respected Alto's wishes the party was almost killed by a magical storm).
In the Duet path, the Fire Fairy stops Alto before she goes into Uncommon Time. The Fairy does this to apologize on behalf of Fairy kind. When Alto inquires as to why she would do such a thing, Fire Fairy mentions that all fairies suffer from indolence. She mentions her friend, the Earth Fairy (I think, I don't quite remember), who hates all of humanity, has only come to such extreme ideas because the Fire Fairy did not step in to stop it. It is at this point Saki interrupts stating why it would be wrong of the Fire Fairy to respect the beliefs of the Earth Fairy. Fire Fairy responds that hatred is a poison and asks Saki if he would let a friend drink poison (referencing a bad ending where Saki lets loli-slut kill herself). After this conversation, Alto goes to enter Uncommon Time only to have Teagan show up at the last second. Without a second's thought, Teagan charges after Alto and both enter Uncommon Time together.

Duet Branch Part 3. No One here but Us:
The Uncommon Time sequence plays out very similarly, but there are very important differences and I never discussed what happened in Uncommon Time previously, so I might as well discuss it here.
In Uncommon Time Alto meets with symbolic representations of her perceived torment which mostly consists of distorted versions of herself pierced with keys. As Teagan and Alto travel through Uncommon Time they come across Alto's past, which is to say, the only places she has ever been before embarking on the main quest: Her family mansion. As Alto looks around her room, remarking on the things she remembers, Teagan gains insight into the extent to which Alto was abused. Through the discoveries and reminiscing, the two become closer as they battle through the mansion and finally out of the garden gates. I will state there is a wonderful bit of dialogue where both Alto and Teagan mention that the gates used to be the only thing that separated them and how they both wished to be able to knock the gates over. Teagan being the older, stronger woman she is, breaks down the gate with her bare hands and the two leave the mansion together.
After leaving the mansion, the two find themselves on a dark pier during a storm. This area was not in the canon game, and after walking down the pier one quickly realizes why. Standing in the way of the two stands Teagan. The Other Teagan shouts out the things Teagan (and the player) know to be true. That Alto is an idiot, weak and cowardly, incapable of doing anything right. Teagan, suddenly seeing this hyperbolic version of herself throwing insults at Alto makes Teagan realize just how poorly she had been treating Alto. Teagan turns to her friend proclaims that the Other Teagan is not her. She continues with "I'm Teagan, your friend, who loves you."
With that Teagan charges toward Other Teagan and a 1v1 boss fight breaks out. Upon being defeated, Other Teagan mentions that there are worse things than her deeper in the dungeon.
Traveling deeper into the dungeon, Teagan and Alto come across the Masked Alto. Before Teagan can react, Masked Alto freezes Teagan in place. Masked Alto then goes on a tirade about how Alto really wants the world to end and doesn't really care about the Song that Saves the World. I don't quite remember how the rest of the conversation went, but Alto and Masked Alto begin another 1v1 boss fight. At the end of the fight Alto hits Masked (now Nuclear) Alto with some Gurren Lagan inspired attack (which I felt was a bit much, but I can overlook it because it seemed to work in the moment). As the Nuclear Alto lies defeated she states that she can never be killed and will always be apart of Alto. Alto kneels down, hugs her Nuclear self. She says that she understands and cannot hate nor deny that part of her. The Nuclear Alto breaks down into tears. At this point Teagan and Alto leave Uncommon Time and both vow to find a way to recreate The Song that Saves the World.
Help from My Friends by the Beatles plays as the credits scroll. Alongside the credits we see the characters going through the remaining trials of the game, now without the pointless drama.
And thus ends Uncommon Time Duet.
Or something like that, my memory is a bit fuzzy.

I could be projecting, but over the years I've met people who insist that you're a loser if you aren't exclusively DEX/INT or running nonhumans/nondwarves. Coincidentally I've always been made to play as the designated strength/tank guy, even if I liked the playstyles they offer.

Feral seems to have the idea that forgiving someone for something is the same thing as allowing them to do it again, so when Alto states that she will never forgive Teagan, Alto seems to justify it by stating that Teagan should always feel hurt by it (and therefore will never forget the lesson to never have banter with a tumblrite).

If I had to guess, it's probably a mix of having a female character with masculine tendencies and setting her further apart from the party. Teagan essentially acts as a foil to all other characters in the game as she is the "villain," as Feral puts it in the after-game library. Feral even has Teagan's portrait face left while all other characters face right to further cement Teagan as an outsider of the party. A nice, subtle touch from Duet Anon is that Teagan's portrait changes direction during the nightmare-pier scene in the Duet route.

Each Teagan Quest seems to choose a different ending as the "true" ending.
The first Teagan Quest chose the ending where Alto loses to a boss fight in the Uncommon Time, which causes her to come back possessed by her most wretched thoughts. As a conciquence of this Alto speeds up the coming winter and Saki and Loli-Slut, sensing the coming end, kill themselves.
The second Teagan Quest I don't remember.
The third Teagan Quest chose the ending where Alto and the party lose to the Teagan boss fight, in which Teagan ends up murdering Alto.
Personally, I want a Teagan Quest where the canon ending happens, the party splits, and Teagan just leaves to go on an adventure to get away from her previous life. Teagan essentially spends the majority of her life befriending and protecting Alto. When the two finally split, I can only imagine this would require Teagan to get away from everything to simply process what has transpired.
Though, my want for a Teagan Quest honestly subsided with the ending of Duet.

From what I recall of the post-game Dev room commentary, part of FeralPhoenix's original desire to create this game came from the fact that she always felt dissatisfied with any stories she read about abuse survivors where the victim winds up forgiving their abuser by the end. She apparently came away from each one feeling as though the victim wasn't actually ready or willing to forgive anyone, and was simply pressured into it by the people around them out of a desire to not continue the (and these are her words) 'cycle of negativity'.
So she intended to create a story where the character suffered abuse at the hands of another, and did not forgive that abuser, and was not shamed or vilified for it. Except that she also wanted Alto to (and again, these are her exact words) 'embrace her hatred' and yet still be considered the good guy, which is the sort of thing that really only works when the bad guy has no redeeming qualities, which is obviously not the case with Teagan. The end result, as you saw for yourself, is a story that's an unintentional and somewhat poorly-written tragedy about a friendship breaking apart and an abuse victim turning into an abuser herself.

That's bang on the money. If Alto were written intentionally as a grey or villainous character she'd be more sympathetic. Duet is as effective as it is because it realises Alto's potential but also has sympathy for her; rather than vilify her or Teagan, it uplifts both.
