It depends a lot on the group. I once had a game start with someone pissing their pants because they didn't feel like rolling to piss on the vault door even though it didn't need a roll. By the end of the second session we started a race war by arming an amazonian tribe because a party member bumped into a random person and we murdered/crucified them for being a dick about it. These are my thoughts :
Overall, the event was nice. Would watch again, but I wouldn't attend unless someone close to me wanted to really go.
Looking at the schedule, what strikes me is the lack of older games (fourth generation consoles or earlier)… I guess it's a matter of preference, and there are good arguments on both sides, but for me anyway speed running and retro gaming kind of go hand in hand. And, by 'retro' I don't mean 'PS2' like millennial …
Also, I associate speedrunning more with consoles than with PC, but that is again just me and down to my own preferences.
An ideal speed-running convention would be mostly older console games with one or two recent games as kind of highlights ; but they should not dominate like in ESA.
That all being said, stand-out moments :
- Cuphead easy run chat reactions
- Firepawlz never-ending grin South Park run, especially the Bootay moment.
- IrregularJinny Super Mario Odyssey closing run. The excuses he constantly made were pretty epic : first it was 'physics', then RNG …
Unfortunately, I missed the first two days and I think I would have enjoyed GreenalinkSDA's runs.
He pretty much single-highhandedly played all the older games :
- Streets of Rage I (Sega Genesis)
- Streets of Rage II (Sega Saturn)
Not sure if anyone caught those, would be nice to hear some thoughts, I see he ran one of those easy.
Would have also liked to see (some of) Joshimuz' run. I'm giving this a good year until he goes full very feminine.
Things I didn't like too much :
- Corporate cuckery taken way too far. Literally the worst : Twitch, Red Bull… Gross. Really makes me want to puke.
- Chat disabled as some points.
- Also, how the fuck to you run for almost a week and raise 20.000 euros only?
- Announcer screwing up majorly with a donation.
- 'Serious time' meme. Wtf is a 'serious time'.
- Closing talk was really cringy with the champagne glasses.
Finally : it doesn't feel like a real speedrunning event unless there's a tranny or two. Sorry, it just doesn't.

According to what I read ESA has only been a stand-alone event for 2 years (previously they were integrated into the wider happenings of Dreamhack), so there's room for improvement I guess.

It's when everyone shuts up so the runner can concentrate. I think jewyama coined it in the first year or two of GDQs. It stuck, because sometimes the runner would legitimately have to concentrate, and the couch wasn't a quarter mile away from the audience.
