Its how it goes in the book, other than Merry's blade has less magnificence in the films. In the books its a blade from the Barrow-downs, a burial site for kings of men of old. So old they may be related to the Nine men with the Nine rings who became Nazgul. The blade is magical and ties to them.
Plus Eowyn didn't just show up and beat him. She got her ass handed to her and only Merry, finally plucking up courage to fight, stabbed him in the knee from behind allowed her to fight back. A Hobbit and a woman killed that which no man could kill.
