Developers are updating the weapon models for Crylink, Electro, and possibly more weapons to come. Some new models come with extra firing animations. Not yet officially released, but available on some servers.

I noticed, but the ping can go from 100 to 300ms from here to US servers, so I wanted to check. I was hoping I could maybe get 100ms and that it was tolerable.

Just entertain this one thought: what would happen if we got the Xonotic devs to do a public interview on /v/. They are essentially right there as in one of them occasionally comes to the /v/ servers to play, and they're in the expected places on IRC.
Personally, I think they will spill spaghetti and botch it entirely. Some of the questions that /v/ may bring up related wouldn't apply because of the game they work with itself (uncommon genre, open source, not making money off the game, weird (non-)structure of the development team).
So I just wonder if anyone has a more positive perception of how they may handle this.
I will still be wholly convinced that it is a bad idea.

I gave it a try and it generally gets across what I want from a video host, and unlike YouTube, I don't need to jump through hoops to unlock being able to respond to comments and uploading longer than 15 min videos.

If you have a video with the encoding type of HEVC and you upload a video, what will happen is that there will be no video played back, but you will still hear audio.

BTW, my general idea on that was to compress most of the Quake 3 arsenal down into 2 weapons, and then also have a weak spawn weapon. General idea is:

Basically, the advantage of surprise or having superior positioning or having both weapons when your opponent has only one should be able to overcome the advantage of having more health. Not that it can't in Quake or Xonotic, it's just much, much harder than it would be in this game concept.

This weapon is somewhat already in the game, except it's a Lightning Gun on the primary and "condensed" Lightning Gun on the secondary. The difference is that it's range limited and it heals team mates.
I don't exactly think its newb friendly. It might be more accessible in the broad sense, but what really helps new players is showing what the game is about.
For example, there are a lot of different mods for Xonotic that try to help the newbie experience like Overkill (only 3 weapons, and most items on the map removed) and Instagib, but it can really detract on what the game is about. Players from the former tend to idiotically rush at people with a shotgun off spawn. Players from the latter are overly focused about aiming to the point they ignore every other fundamental concept of the game (& it really gives off the there's nothing else to the game except pointing a gun at someone first vibe). Both are likely bad at controlling key points on the map.
With this idea, people might not realize there's more to weaponry than the rail gun, rocket launcher, and lightning gun trinity.

OK OK OK, different, better idea. I think that arena shooters, Xonotic included, are missing one key thing: a good single player experience. Xonotic has a campaign but quite frankly, it's a joke. It also has bot matches, but for some reason if you want to make a bot custom match, you have to go into multiplayer and make a private server, which is counter-intuitive.
What a good campaign should do is teach the player all the mechanics of the game in a slow, steady, easily digestible way. At the moment players are thrown into the fire with the assumption that they know how arena shooters work, because if you're downloading a game like Xonotic you probably were looking for an experience like it. I'm going to be honest, even Unreal Tournament and to a lesser extent Quake failed at this. Their idea of easing the player in is to just start with rock stupid bots and just crank up their difficulty as you go along. That really doesn't help the player improve all that much. I played tons of UT as a kid, and I didn't even fucking know what a shock combo was until a friend told me about it.
In short, what we need is a teaching campaign, and customizable bots. This is one thing that UT did well, if I recall correctly. Remember how bots in UT2K4 had different stats that made them good at different aspects of the game? That should be in Xonotic as well.
It would also help if Xonotic bots did not do things like get stuck on map geometry and fail to collect armor that's right in front of them, but what can you do?
So I'm thinking the campaign would teach the player one step at a time, like so:
1. A simple taste. FFA game with trash bots, basically just target practice.
2. Movement basics. Obstacle course with blaster. Get the player used to blaster jumping and blaster boosting
3. Weapon Intricacies. Explain some extra details about the weapons, such as explosion damage going through walls, the Crylink inversion and ricochet, Electro combo, mid-air Devastator detonation, etc. Then throw them into another FFA game with bots that are still dumb (so they'll do things like walk into electro grenades and such), but can actually aim, and set it on a close quarters map with thin walls so that these new techniques can be readily used.
4. More complex movement. Race map, beat an easy time to move on. Explain the diagonal jumping acceleration and ramp jumping. Make sure both of these skills are used heavily in the race.
5. Item control. Duel with a bot who has good aim and won't just walk into traps, but does not even attempt to control items. Emphasize the advantage that this gives you, and make sure to inform the player of item timers. Perhaps even keep the spectator-mode item timers on-screen for this match, but inform the player that they will not be present in normal gameplay.
6. Moving and shooting. Another blaster obstacle course, but this time also include targets to shoot with a Mortar while moving. Encourage the player to keep speed up but allow them to move on even if they're slowing down to shoot stuff.

Apparently no plans for blaster jumping bots. I think the devs are mainly concerned about the cpu usage of bots ever since the last release with bot improvements came with a lot of complaints of servers not being able to handle them.
In a few cases like the MA on bloodrun, a bot can probably grab it with a hardwired waypoint.

I don't know what you're talking about. The channel we're in also has a bot so the server chat is linked with irc.
The network rules are you can't have more than 5 bots. One client for yourself, and another for a bot that will always sit in some channels should be enough.

When the shots hit the ledges, that's typically because the origin of the shot is the gun as opposed to being from the crosshair. There is the effect where 2-3 people playing on a server causes the rest lurking the server browser to rush in at some point. It normally depends on when that 2-3 people are playing around on the server.
Sometimes there's small activity in the mornings and afternoons, but unless you're getting notifications from the server it's unlikely you catch a match then.

Alright, been out for a while but now I've tried The New Map (tm)
Crimzone looks bretty good. I think I see glass and water though, plus lots of warps, so 10 flaming toasters out of 10
Layout's mostly good, except the stretch from MH to MA is fucked. Way too much power concentrated in one little area of the map. Plus there's ammo there? Too much
I'd personally move the MH more towards that bottom of the staircase area. Maybe add a little room or cubby down there for it, or a ramp and a ledge maybe? In any case, I shouldnt be able to basically grab one mega, and then lay down fire on the other one to either grab it myself or whittle down someone who tries to steal it. At least on the prior antmap you could shoot at the other powerup but you had to drop out of LOS to get it

I never interacted with Mark or got banned, nor had any first hand experience with any issues that get brought up about him.
I don't have anything against posting on a smaller board, but moving over because of some hearsay and scuffle that I'm not involved with personally doesn't sit right with me.

It's going to take a lot of experimentation with the item placements. I think b2 should come out to at least put real curves on the domes, instead of the blocky ones that are in now.
I think the mega items should be redone entirely. I agree.

You could probably get away with rearranging items, map looks big enough for that though it will still probably be more of a casual map. Nice job with the textures. Looks like a real Xonotic map and it's much more toaster-friendly than the other /v/ warp zone map.
