Yeah NDS_TGM. That one's good, but it's not entirely accurate to the originals, notably, there's no grade system, and no Cool! system in the case of TGM3 mode. It got C&D'd too. I normally play NullPoMino, or emulated TGM2 for those. I suck bad at them too.

20G piece stacking seriously hasn't clicked for me. I try to mostly play on T.A Death because it demands stricter piece placement than TGM3 where you have the hold box and the addiction of floor kicking which really helps with the I-block. But yeah, I'm terrible.

>the gameboy version
3 problems: 1. The distribution of pieces in that one is completely random, meaning you can get a lot of I pieces or a few. So your score depends too much on luck. Newer versions of Tetris are biased towards a more egalitarian distribution (a problem is that the standard demanded by the company since around the year 2000 is that it has to be literally a random sequence of the seven different pieces followed by another and so on, which feels a bit too homogeneous). Another way of dealing with this unfairness would be to keep the distribution highly random while adjusting the score to that, though I've never seen that. (What I mean is a part of your score would consist of automatically getting points for every piece that drops, the lowest for the I-piece, the highest for z and s). 2. Stiff controls make it unplayable at high speed, see the Arika titles for how it should be done. 3. You only see one piece into the future, making it less strategic than newer titles.

Trying to tweak score based on the outcome of a bad RNG would be terrible compared to just fixing the RNG. I do like the model of the TGM1&2 which biases against the last couple of pieces, and isn't as complicated as the TGM3 one.

Hmm, even without programming anything I just realized that this isn't perfect. I had only thought about close repetition, especially of s and z (three of them in a row are impossible with that), but I forgot droughts. Since this starts from a bag of 14, and one bag can have one type of piece at the beginning of the sequence and the next bag at the end, it really needs some modification to make sure you don't have to wait too long until a piece is repeated in the sequence.

https://tetrisconcept.net/threads/randomizer-theory.512/
It's linked from that hardrop article but this entire thread is worth a read because it shows some of the ways older Tetris games have managed to bugger up their RNG. Sometimes subtly, sometimes majorly. That one in GB Tetris where they don't compare the piece type correctly is pretty hilarious. There's other threads in there that might be fun too.
At the other extreme you have Bastard Tetris which deliberately gives you the pieces you don't want.

I remember a "sextris" from… probably the '90s. Some of the pieces were male, some were female. I think the goal in that one was to fit them together so that they're fucking, or at any rate that only the pieces that are fucking would clear.
