1 character or 1 player? If the latter, most RTS games are 1v1 like starcraft etc. Sure there's the possibility to play with a team but the most competitive mode is 1v1.

Rune Gold/Classic (Whichever one is the one that has multiplayer)

There is a mode where many people are in a game, but it's an arena where two people 1 v 1 while the rest watch from above waiting in line to fight whoever wins. Not sure if anyone still plays it, but I had a lot of fun with it.
