The fact that the userbase is so split between defending the skins with the "it's like a football jersey" argument, and denouncing Blizzard for disguising a massively overpriced cosmetic drop as "team spirit" items is really testament to how good Blizzard is at developing whales, and how cancerous sports trends are.
The "digital goods" question is largely a minefield… but I think, server costs and ongoing development being what they are, the bottom line is that people who drop money on microtransactions should, at the very least, get what they pay for. Five dollars, as it turns out, is definitely not worth a simple recolor and decal, especially when a near-equivalent item can be purchased using about an hour's worth of in-game currency.
