First, the SkullGirl devs kickstart a game with Valkyrie Profile inspired gameplay, then out of nowhere I find this game has done the same thing.

Is it really that hard to come up with a new and unique RPG battle mechanic? Out of all the games to mimic, why Valkyrie Profile?

The battle system mixes real-time and turn-based in a way that doesn't immediately shit all over the floor. I'd rather see a fresh batch of VP ripoffs than the usual "action RPGs" that've been done to death.

Emulate the first one, as a PS1 game it should run on anything. If you want the best ending you have to mess around a bit, check a FAQ.

Fallen Legion itself looks like shit. These Valkyrie Profiles clones try to add extra stuff to make it more "dynamic" or whatever and it collapses into a mess of gauges and button-mashing. Part of the reason VP separated player and enemy attacks was to allow the player to pull off fancy combo attacks; Fallen Legion removes this, so the game quickly becomes a mess of guesswork and button-mashing. If these people want to rip off the game, they should do a better job.

That genuinely made me laugh out loud and you deserve those trips.

Also: the most memorable thing about the original Valkyrie Profile was the dub, which VERY OBVIOUSLY featured the same voice cast as the original Pokemon. Early on you are treated to a Brock/Nurse Joy romance, not to mention the princess who exclaims "No matter how many are defeated, more beer!" after every fight.
