With the rise of online news sources that cover eastern games and online stores that allow you access to these games. Why should small niche targeting companies bother with localizing games in the west and not just using the Asia (multilanguage) version more? Some already do this with Playasia but these niche games will never make it mainstream. They don't need it on store shelves because the people who want this niche type of game will already know about it from all the news sources covering it online and normalfags will never get it unless it's for streaming "Those wacky Japanese games".

I'm sure it's much less of an headache to make and Asia version and not have to follow the demands of the western localization companies like NISA, Aksys, and NoA that butcher the games or add in various things that only double the amount of times it takes to actually translate, edit, and test the game. Saying that, a game selling on Steam and GoG will definitely make it so it's seen by many more people.

Because efficiency isn't localization's end goal.

I'm assuming you don't mean (((localization))). The big problem is that localization companies in the west are prone to butchering censoring the games they release which really pushes said niche audience away and barely anyone ends up buying the game. I can't really use NISA as an example because they break the games too and not even censorship apologists can ignore that.

Even if these JP companies localized for profit. Localization companies hurt said profit with their agendas and unprofessional work ethics.

Do those types of releases require the devs to translate everything themselves? I've only ever gotten a few of the Asia multi language versions of games before, and while they are nice, I'm not sure how they differ from traditional localization.

I would assume they would make a new division to handle those things. Saying that, it's clear that sometimes these translations are done by machines and checked by no one. That Super Robot Wars game before V being a good example. Gundam Breaker 3 was mediocre as well but it worked fine.

Exposure from local media in respective regions I'd assume. A fair amount of my Vita library is Region 3 because the games didn't release in my region either at all or physically but if I hadn't heard word of mouth about the three reliable retailers that carry these games I probably wouldn't have them. Without an established retail presence stocking them, or an established media doing the marketing for them, they don't usually sell too well. I'm not in the business though so my guess is probably as good as anyone's here.

A lot of them do. It shouldn't be hard for you to find games that only have JP and AS versions. The problem is region lock in all its forms. To get dlc and patches for AS physical vita games you need to make an AS psn on a separate memory card which is an extra cost that some customers don't want to afford. Foreign accounts also need you to buy overpriced prepay cards from third parties if you want to buy something because fuck your credit card.

That is true and PSN points are already a bullshit system for obvious reasons. I forgot that was a thing since I haven't downloaded DLC in ages.
