What are games that completely floored your expectations the first time you played them? I don't necessarily mean games you were expecting to be bad but were good, but games that were much better than you expected to the point of adoring them.

For me, I bought Rune Factory 4 as a spur of the moment shortly after it was released, and while I had never played Rune Factory before I heard it was Harvest Moon with dungeon crawling, but was completely shocked at just how good it was. The amount of content, options, depth, and length completely floored me. I was expecting something fun, but Rune Factory 4 easily became a game I consider to be one of the best 3DS games and one of my favorite games of all time.

Dragon's Dogma.

Etrian Odyssey 3/4

solid gameplay and art/design and some of the best music I've heard in videogames

Touhou and Dragon Quest for the same reasons

Also when I finally played Skyrim for the first time earlier this year it was better than I expected. If it wasn't so buggy it would be one of my favorite games.

Skyrim is great for its lore and writing. But there are a lot of missed opportunities, the game is deeply unfinished. Most of the "guilds" you join don't even have proper amount of quests just because they feel rushed. I also can't enjoy skyrim's buttery combat.

can you give an example? I don't remember anything being particularly notable or interesting.

Morrowind's was still better by and far

Chibi-Robo. Thought it was just going to be a cute platformer, but it turned out to be a really solid adventure game with a lot of content and a very enjoyable story and fun characters and a crazy soundtrack.

yeah but the bugs were what put me over the edge, on PS3 at least you can't even hope to completely finish the game (all main quest routes anyway) as the save files get more and more massive. Eventually the saves reach a point where they become unplayable buggy messes. I can overlook the unfinished stuff.

not him but it's pretty much an extension of what makes morrowind good

Ghost Trick. I had no fucking idea what the hell it was besides the fact that I heard it named dropped every once in a while in "recommend me NDS games" threads. Went in completely blind.

There are not a lot of things about Skyrim that are really good, but it deserves credit where credit is due. For instance, in the lore the province of Skyrim is covered in varying degrees of snow. Skyrim in the game is covered in varying degrees of snow. Oblivion set the bar REALLY low.

I like to explore. It's good for exploring and I payed $5 for it.

I've played it around 4 times at this point. I still think about it fairly often.

Gayrim is only good for the lewd mods, and even those have janky shitty animations with horrid clipping.

It went to shit around the time it decided to meme up skyrim's faults to such a ridiculous degree fucking Oblivion gets nostalgia threads sometimes. Considering oblivion better than skyrim is goddamn ludicrous.

chibi robo is one of the best gamecube games. reminds me of early rugrats games.

Okami. I borrowed it from a friend and he only told me that it was about a wolf that fights with a paintbrush. I was expecting some kinda shovelware 3d platformer like Ninjabread Man, but it fucking blew me away. The game's goddamn beautiful and the celestial brush is probably one of my favorite game mechanics. I haven't played it in 7 years, so it might just be nostalgia blinding me, but I'd probably consider it my favorite game of all time.

Rose in the Twilight. I was just interested in the other NIS games htol#niq and Yomawari and happened to get all three, but it was Rose that swept me off my feet with its swift gameplay and pace, and the beautiful atmosphere.
