>The sequel
XC2 isn't XC:X's sequel, for one.
XC2's UI and text is a lot better and easier to read, and the game is story-based (like its actual prequel) rather than gameplay-based like XC:X was, so the story flows a lot better, though it takes a while to really open up and get going, even more so than the original, and it has a habit of gating important game mechanics until certain points (for example you can't even perform a chain attack no matter how hard you try until a specific point a few chapters in). Shit like this is going to really kill the game's replayability if they don't do something about it if/when they give us NG+ mode. Oh that's another thing - no NG+ mode yet unlike the original (no idea if XC:X had it, I never got around to actually finishing the game before getting rid of my Wii U and I can't be assed restarting from scratch in Cemu until they actually bother optimizing for it and not Zelda for once).
XC2 still has a lot of bullshit quests but at least it seems they've toned down on the kill quests compared to XC1, at least somewhat. Though the few special Blade-related quests I've done to date are fucking atrocious (particularly the Vess one - from what I've seen so far it's like they got the artists for each of these Blades to come up with their own fanfiction to put in as quests).
I love the Xenoblade series as a whole so far but god damn Monolith Soft really shit me off sometimes with some of their design decisions. At least this time around they're bothering to patch the game (we're supposed to be getting v1.1.1 in a couple of weeks which fixes a few bugs and has a few small quality of life changes as well - like actually having the map open up to where you are rather than forcing you to keep navigating to your location just to check the map, and another 1:1 zoom level for the minimap).
Also they're teasing NG+ mode for what I'm assuming will be another later patch (or hopefully even part of v1.1.1, I can't tell): www.nintendo.com/whatsnew/detail/xenoblade-chronicles-2-director-takahashi-on-first-post-launch-update
