BoTW is still very empty and boring. It IS populated with shrines, but the vast majority of shrines are easy and piss and not fun at all, with very little incentive to actually search them out.
Skyrim was more empty and boring than BoTW without question, but BoTW was still empty and boring in its own right.

Botw was very underwhelming. It was Nintendos interpretation of 10 year old crafting and collecting open world survival games and they really didn't do much of all with it. I'm seeing more and more that nintendos touch is just a bit of extra polish andsome filler animations. Breath of the wild was awful.
Nier automata in all likelihood is the most important game of the year. The directing is impeccable, the way it handles and explores some fascinating ideas, the way music is handled is one of the strongest examples of innovation in a long time. The acting too is something really special with the actors hitting their deliveries perfectly.
The weakest point in the game is combat gets pretty easy, the open world is a little empty, and some of the optional content isn't too great but these complaints always come off as minor nitpicks selling the absolute best game of the year way too short.

I don't see how anyone doesn't see how shallow and empty BotW is, but then I felt the same way about Skyrim. It's like some people just cannot tell that an ocean is an inch deep.
The game is essentially a vertical slice that was then copypasted in a rush across a map way too large for the manpower they had. The same enemies, the same 4-5 korok seed "puzzles" copied literally 1000 times, the same fire sword you've seen 100 times before (and broken 100 times), even many of the same shrines with a miniboss fight shamelessly copypasted at least a dozen times. Exploration is pointless (in an open world game!) as any loot you might find will just self-destruct and the fairy fountains are breadcrumbed from stables. All you need is enough hearts to advance the plot and you can just ignore everything else without missing out on anything.
I was hoping after Odyssey (which is a legitimately good game) we'd see less of this misplaced love for a Zelda so bad it challenges Skyward Sword as there's no desperate need to cling to the only game on the switch anymore. I think a lot of it is the media is pushing the game hard as it's the most Jewish game from Nintendo yet with transexuals, faggots, niggers, and stronk wymyn, and Nintenyearolds aren't wise to their tricks yet.

What even is the appeal of Legend of Zelda games in general? I've played OoT and Wind Waker and I just felt like they were massive chore lists than actual adventures. The bosses were a bit of a challenge, but were lacking in design, including the final battle. The ending was shit, too.

There were actually some good puzzles, but none of them were in any of the beasts except for the lizard thing, and they were so few and far between for the shrines that I can't really point out anything worth noting. Those eternally dark ruins were fun, most of the overworld shrine-hunting riddles were fun, but rarely were the shrines themselves actually fun.
For gameplay, aside from the complete lack of enemies, combat was varied and interesting enough with going between different climate and area zones netted you some decent replayability, especially if you regularly attempted different maneuvers or more efficient, or more elaborate ways of murdering your enemies. Exploration is definitely there. I kept finding interesting things even around places I frequented, but it's not something you can keep doing. To enjoy the exploration you need to be more open to guess work, not being driven around by the promise of spirit orbs or something else because when you don't find it you'll be annoyed, so it's a venture best taken after breaks. It's a fun game to come back to, it's just not deep in the right places. If there were many less shrines and all the dungeons were more like hyrule castle, it'd be fucking 11/10 have my children, I believe.
I evidence this by pointing to the early game, where there's a general sense of terror when dealing with enemies of unknown strength, or are just stronger. After you get to the late-middle portion of the game, though, you're too comfortable. Too many reagents, too much damage and skill. Things become a cakewalk, so when things like eventide island happened it was a fun and refreshing event. If they somehow made the game like that most of the time, maybe having you die faster but the enemies also take real damage, then maybe that'd solve the problem. Eventually camps just become trivial and there's just not anything of note to explore in their shitty tree-house platforms, so you never fight them unless they're directly in your way. I'm sure to remedy the boring feeling they put in skeletons and the like at night, to make sure you're always on your toes, but they're no threat, especially since a headshot will one-hit-kill any skeleton since that's its weakpoint. The only thing that remained interesting until the very end were guardians, because even with the very best gear they can still fuck your shit if you take on too many at once with no strategy, or are just going at them unprepared.
Hopefully one of their expansions, seeing as it's not CD-locked and is actually stuff they make, will make the game better in that way. Maybe actually good dungeons, maybe interesting things to dick around with, maybe a mode that isn't the sponge-retardation of master mode but with the right level of challenge at all times.

I get the strangest sense despite what they said about all the hard work, time and dedication put into it, it still got rushed part way through development just like the fucking full power NX had to be sacrificed and rushed out as the Switch possibly a decade prematurely.

All the Zelda elements of the game are superficial, there's no ancient temples or interesting items to find, it's just the names of characters, races, places slapped on a fairly generic open world.
