I never played Space sims back in the day, I tried going back to a few now and I don't quite get what the rage was all about.

I played some Wing Commander, while the gameplay seems pretty basic I suppose the thing people liked were the state of the art cutscenes, while the adventure game and space shooting kind of came second. I suppose this is kind of similar for the more linear space sims that came after it.

However I really don't understand what Elite and its sequels have that make them so special, I'm having a lot of trouble understanding and playing them because I'm not used to the genre and I'm also retarded so I don't really get it.

Can someone that knows a lot about the genre give me a quick rundown of what are their favorite space sims and why they like them so much?

How about you make up your own goddamn mind?

I have, I just want to know why people liked these games and if they still do 20 years after their release.

You seem to think that "Space Sims" means "Chris Roberts". You should have tried something that was actually good, like X-Wing Alliance or Freespace, or fuck even Rebel Galaxy.

I think I did try X-Wing Alliance, however I was having some trouble controlling it without owning a flight stick.

Could've been some other Star Wars game similar to it.

I'll try the other two I guess

I know it's a novel concept but some people can and will enjoy shit without requiring someone patting them on the head beforehand. Is it fun? Yes? No? It's your fucking call.

Nigga I think you're misunderstanding what I'm asking.

I just want to know why people enjoy them, I wasn't playing this shit in its hayday and now they feel really old and clunky so I will be mostly unable to enjoy them like people that played them back then.

I'm legitimately interested in having a discussion about why people were so passionate about the genre.

It's not about my opinion or what I think of the genre.

Play TIE fighter and Freespace 2 with Open Freespace since that gives you access to both Freespace 1 and 2

Some people like space ships and playing video games where you pilot space ships to shoot other space ships is what they enjoy? Nigger it's not complicated. Don't you have things you like?

e3d701 No.13956383

>>13956369

Yes and I like shooting at enemies, but I like Quake and not Call of Duty Infinite Warfare.

I wanna know something slightly more specific

>I wanna know something slightly more specific

So you shoot enemies, but the enemies are space ships, and you're a space ship too.

Thanks, great addition to the thread

Even with your vast knowledge of the genre, apparently every single game in it is exactly the same, meaning there is no reason to play stuff that isn't made by Chris Roberts

Guess I'll just stop with Wing Commander,

Space arcade sims are basically underwater fighter jets. The novelty of dogfighting in space and moving around with 6 degrees of freedom without worrying about gravity and the hard packed dirt slapping your face is all its got. Some games like X-series and No Man's Sky try to expand on it through various gimmicks. X has business management while NMS has on-foot planetary exploration. If you're trying to experience the genre, just play and enjoy Freelancer then come back in 20 years. Maybe then we'll actually have engaging space sims with orbital mechanics.

oh no such a loss, please don't stop wing commander

Which of the X games is worth playing?

I know the most recent ones are generally regarded as bad

dd5a6f No.13956448

>>13956441

X3 is generally regarded as the best

03e165 No.13956450

>>13956441

Rebirth is the only one regarded as bad. X3:TC is pretty much the gold standard for X games but AP adds the stock exchange that helps non-autists to earn a fuck ton without turning the game into a business tycoon.

>why's vidya fun

>not template thread

Oh, I'm fairly sure I'm not misunderstanding anything. Fine. Some fags enjoy exploring and the freedom, others like dogfighting and all the pretty explosions, and yet others like playing the long game and roleplaying the spacejew. Amazingly enough some like all of that.

You find what you like and why. Arcade shit, free roam takes forfuckingevertoreachanything realistic shit, big ships or fighter clusterfucks and you'll have your answer.

>they feel really old and clunky

At first it felt clunky back in the day as well. it was part of the fun getting good
