It's an online battle site. A lot of people on the competitive scene use it to test teams without wasting preparing/catching/breeding mons.
>what does this mean?
Red/Blue had a barebones system in place compared to what's used in anything today.
>The ridiculously stupid base stat growth used in them was replaced with EVs (basically if you beat fast Pokemon you get points to make your Speed faster, same with the other stats)
>The Special stat was split into Special Attack and Special Defense. Which stat is used for damage is no longer dependent on the type for the attack, so you can have things like a viable Fire type with a strong (physical) Attack.
>Pokemon have abilities that need to be accounted for, but you only really need to learn the top used mons if you're starting out.
>The official competitive scene is in Double Battles, but a community called Smogon has their own rules for handling Single Battles that has its own massive scene.
>Pokemon can hold items that give passive effects, such as giving an immunity to Ground type attacks until struck with an attack (Balloon) or increasing power of a certain type of attack. Two types of these are notable icons of their generations:
>Mega-Evolution stones give some Pokemon powered-up forms of themselves with new stats and abilities. Since these are so powerful, you're limited to one Pokemon mega-evolving per battle.
>Z-Crystals are pretty much the same thing, but with types of attacks and in some rare cases some specific attacks. You are allowed one Z-move per battle.
>Weather, a Gold/Silver/Crystal mechanic is widespread and has passive abilities on certain mons, usually type and/or ability-dependent. Introduction of one type of weather cancels an existing one out
>Terrain is gaining popularity, which is similar.
>Three types have been introduced since Gen 1: Dark, Steel, and Fairy. Dark is basically Ghost 2.0. Steel is a defensive powerhouse, and Fairy is one of the most OP types in the game.
