I don't think this article will tell anyone here anything new, but I thought it was interesting to learn a bit about the mindset of someone who spends thirteen and a half thousand fucking dollars on P2W garbage over six years. Notably, he was a high school student and got a second job just to finance his addiction to virtual currency and microtransactions.
The only reason he quit one particularly bad game was because it was sold to a Chinese company who changed it so much that even the whales left, which meant his friends left, which meant he had no reason to play. Imagine spending $4,000 on a game and then leaving because the only reason you played it in the first place was because all your friends were playing it.

Nobody fucking cares that he spent 10,000 over the course of like six years on microtransactions spread over several games. That works out to be something like just about what you'd spend buying a new game every two weeks for a six year period. That he spent that much on only a handful of games is just retarded, but not exhorberant compared to the regular costs of the hobby (even if you're buying less games but also having to buy hardware, online fees, and other shit normalfags buy).
The real disgusting thing about the story, and the point that nobody is focusing on, is that he paid 10,000 for NOTHING. He received no goods or services in exchange for his cash. Both the content he was gambling for, and the mechanisms by which which the content was selected and delivered, was all already baked into the software he had downloaded. The service specifically rendered, was only a payment withdraw from his account. All the "game" did, was check to see if the payment had been made before continuing.
He got scammed, and addicted to scam, and nobody cares about that. They just focus on the amount of money he spent, which in relation to what a lot of people already pay for their gaming habits - isn't extraordinary.
It's a piss poor standing for an argument against microtransactions that is easily defeated - especially if argued in front of a judge, or anybody who doesn't really give much of a shit about videogames.

If the content was specifically created after the completion and launch of the game, isn't included in a mandatory update (making it a discrete product and not just part of the game's routine maintenance that was agreed to be delivered upon and as part of the point of sale/download), then yes - you are paying for a good/service. Then it becomes a matter of the content being provided being hyperjew overpriced - and that is a separate issue.

1) The players who buy skins/loot boxes with skins in them are an elevated class of players who have access to cosmetic options the rest of the player base does not. This breeds contempt and divides the community, even if only subconsciously.
2) The skins provide some intangible benefit to gameplay, either by fucking with a character's design to the point it's unrecognizable or by changing the visual indicator not to align properly with the hurboxes/hitboxes.
Either one of these is a dealbreaker for game balance and long-term player engagement. Both is cancer squared.

I've never played any of those. I don't typically play games which have a heavy emphasis on microtransactions/lootboxes, because it's a huge redflag to me that the core of the game has been altered to shoe-horn in some irritation agent which is there to encourage you to buy microtransactions in order to make it an enjoyable experience.
If the game isn't enjoyable out of the box, it's not worth paying for to begin with, let alone paying extra. I'll make the rare exception for free to play games, but usually I don't spend more than 10~20 hours on a free to play MMO before getting bored and confused at the myriad of different game currencies designed to throttle progression and just give up. The only exceptions being PSO2 and Let it Die, which I still play on occasion but never spent a dime on.
PSO2 would be so much better of a game if they just went back to the Hunter's License subscription model, directly sold minor cosmetic packs (if they wanted to make more side-cash), and then streamlined everything back into the core mechanics. Basically, I want PSP2i with PSO2's combat.
