Role-playing is meant for tabletop role-games because there it actually serves as the mechanics. Until gaming can emulate the freedom of choice that tabletop allows role-playing in video games will always be looked down upon because it's basically just autism that serves little purpose to the actual game. If you want to role-play my suggestion is to go find a GM/DM.

This mod was fucking fun if you played with the right people. I find it well-designed because it's not aimless, it's faction-based and you have the goal of conquering and furthering for your faction. It's largely Deus Vulting and riding to battle against your enemies with medieval RP going on.

the general concept is promising, but the current state is cancer. They're not narrative driven because there is no one serving as GM and if there is no narrative or quest goal, everyone eventually gets bored and drama breaks out. I've yet to find one that isn't either a clique server for cop roleplay or absolute chaos.

It worked in MUDs/MOOs as there was little the game could do that the player couldn't. The transition to graffix was what killed it as there was no way for a player to visually emote the same kind of complexity they could easily textually emote.
There were some attempts to get past that. Furcadia had a lot of unique systems for it, Second Life made a more free-form attempt, and Ryzom Ring tried a more gamified approach. But they all hit the same problem that it was just too complex and that it'd never be as easy to make imagination real as with text.

I decided to see if NWN was still alive, and pretty much all the servers left are hardcore RP. I joined the only one that didn't need mods. It was fun as fuck at first and I had all sorts of weird scenarios I ended up in. I was constantly finding new people to RP and go on raids with. Raids where we actually reacted to shit going on and the environments. As soon as I hit a certain level the fun dried up immediately. I couldn't find anyone around my level any more and as a rogue I was pretty much fucked. When I did they just wanted to mindlessly grind the levels. Usually running in the same ring lightning fast to get to a high level, never venturing into any of the other paths. Hell, there was even a whole temple that nobody would venture into, because it wasn't as fast to raid.
In this stagnant state I kinda learned more about the server itself. There where signs everywhere that the glory days where long gone. Everyone pretty much had the game figured out. The community had a lot of unspoken rules of when to act in and out of character which ruined a lot of it for me. Worst there where chunks of the server who where friends outside of the game, and would rarely interact with anyone besides them. Then there where people who just cheesed the game hard to make some overpowered character who would dominate everyone else just trying to RP as a necromancer. Some of the classes where banned until you admins approved you just to avoid this very thing, and it sucked because in NWN the classes where wildly unbalanced.
At this point I kinda figured there was no point in trying to go any further. It seemed all the fun was when people where trying out new characters and didn't really know what was going on. If you tried actually roleplaying you could never compete with the people cheesing out a character that can kill you before you can react.

I used to RP in NWN servers. Half the reason I did it was because the RP servers had the best modules with the most impressive scripts, like one server I played on which scripted in all of 3.5e's rules including grappling, and another which was set in Planescape and had its own unique spells and prestige classes. The problem with RP servers is the community is cancerous as fuck, and I don't just mean people who are bad or even cringy at RP. If it was that, I could totally deal with it and ignore them. It's the fucking awful nerd politics, pathetic assholes who feel the need to take control and ruin everything because their cousin won't let him play in their fucking D&D group because he's an annoying little shit. The last time I played on a NWN RP server, the mercenary company my character worked for was subverted by a cringy tiefling with practically unlimited funds at her disposal (she was captain of the knights of the main city of the module) and she effectively eliminated the company by taking over its leadership. Our leader was I guess a new player, guess it could have been one of the tiefling player's friends for all I knew, and he was naive enough to trust her people for funds and she basically wasted our time with a dramatic RP event which culminated in the ownership of the company being transferred to the tiefling. Me and the former leader quit after that. I'm sure fucking with everyone's companies and guilds is hilarious when you've played the module with 100 different characters, but who the fuck has the patience to deal with this shit when I just want to play the module for the first time and not have to worry about bullshit?
