The game was originally pitched as Galian Panzers and was originally aimed to come out near the end of the PS2's life span with PC and PS3 releases later down the line. Also it was originally meant to be more WWII styled but went for a WWI/WWII mix for the rustic comfy factor. The Darcsen were originally supposed to be a race of rabbit eared shorties. There isn't much known about this iteration, other than some pics in the artbook.

I have played both VC1 and VC3, 3 was a lot better in terms of game-play but a lot worse in terms of graphics. If I had to rate them it would go like this
Story: VC3 has a decent story that miles better than VC2 (I couldn't bring myself to finish 2 so I don't count myself having played it) but not as good as VC1. The writers realized they went way too anime boilerplate with 2 in so they toned it back to just a bit more than VC1 levels and worked out OK. The best ending in 3 involves the MC getting with 2 girls, so that's nice.
Game-play: VC3 is miles ahead VC1, the three main characters all have unique special abilities that make them play very differently on the battlefield though the remainder of the cast is fairly interchangeable, things like multiple take-downs or being able to use Valkyria powers on command really spices up game-play. Mission objective variety is much higher and has more conditions, for example the capture enemy base objective now requires that you capture and hold multiple posts at the same time with the bases located all over the map and if you capture just one the enemy can be rather aggressive in trying to get back.
Balancing: HOLY FUCKING SHIT is it awful. In VC1 you could just rush the enemy with Alcia and that would be enough but thankfully that's not possible in VC3, however… the enemies in VC3 are ridiculously OP, you could be more than 5 levels above the enemy and have all the best equipment available at the moment and it would still take more than ¾ of a magazine of head-shots from a shocktrooper to drop an enemy while it only takes 2 to 5 body shots from the enemy to kill one of your characters. Just to test this I had scouts empty their magazines with all head shots in to the enemy and it took about 6 to 8 headshots to drop an enemy, standard scout rifle has 5 shots and the enemy always counterattacks, you do the math on what happens. The enemy weapons are essential to getting through the game, the problem is that you can only get one from each mission and you can’t replay missions until the story is complete so if you miss it you are going to have a really hard time. I will be honest, there were a few times I had to save scum in order to complete a mission, the odds are just too much against you.

Graphics: VC1 so far ahead of VC3 it’s not even funny, the PSP games don’t use the Canvas engine so while the art style is the same the execution is a lot different, the lower poly models aren’t even the problem so much as the fact that the watercolor painting effect that was in VC1 is absent and what remains is a poor imitation that doesn’t look nearly as nice. Another big problem is asset reuse, there really wasn’t too much of it in VC1 but a lot of it in VC3… and I mean a lot. You will find yourself on the same battlefield for main story missions more than once and the side missions are so copy paste that it will get old real fast. Most of the story in VC3 is also told through text with portraits of the characters talking, there are cut-scenes but they are all 2D animated.
DLC: All the DLC in VC1 was very well made and entirely optional, there was nothing that was stripped out of the main story, it was additional worthwhile content, and there was not too much of it so if you didn’t get it was not big deal as well as the fact that it was included in the PC release (I have both the PC and PS3 versions). In VC3 that's not the case, there are very significant amounts of character development in DLC as well as all the best weapons and characters. After I finished the main game (I played the translation patch) I looked what was in the DLC and was disgusted, not only is there a lot of content behind DLC but thee DLC weapons have stats that the main game should have had. Essentially what happened is the the DLC is what was needed to have better balancing in the game making the main game unnecessarily hard without it.
Verdict: I would still recommend VC3 but only if you can get it for free, play it on the PPSSPP emulator and you will have a good time. VC3 fixes a lot of the problems with both VC1 and 2 but the balancing is worse though in the favor of the AI rather than the player. I would rate VC3 below VC1 but only by a very slim margin since the ability to have Alcia just run to the enemy base ruined a lot of the fun. On a side note if you play the unpatched PC release of VC1 the enemy machine guns do a lot more damage due to a glitch so scout rushing is a lot harder, it’s the way I play it’s a lot more fun

I wanted to finish translating it sop I reached out to the head of the translation effort more than a year ago on reddit and he promised to give me the program he used to decompile the text and assets for the game but he never got back to me and after the second attempt to reach him I just gave up since school started back up again and he clearly wasn’t going to give it to me, so if anyone here knows how to decompile and reassemble PSP games feel free to speak up since I would still like to finish translating it and maybe fix some of the balancing issues.

You can get Aliasse and a special girl as extra.
Also, judging by the dev screens you'll probably be able to use your own valkyria when she awakens because there are SP points on the screen.

The first game didn't have a lot of actual fantastic action.
It was two missions against Selvaria during which you didn't even fight her directly and one where Alicia is roaming around for a turn or two.
Also a few cutscenes, but the fantastic elements were actually very few. It's just that those scenes made a very strong impression since they clash against everything else that you've seen so far.
2 and 3 have super soldiers like the V2 troops and giant gatling guys, not to mention the entirety of Calamity Raven soldiers who are significantly stronger than your average Empire men.
There are also fencers and techs in those games. Whether you think they fit in or not is a matter of taste, but they are an unusual sight.
VC1 had nothing like that, so I'm guessing that's what he meant.

I think VC should be a serious story (giant valkyria boobs and comic relief characters aside), and I think spats would have suited better than pantsu (sort of the same stuff that hindered VC2- making it more like a shit-tier slice-of-highschool anime).

We criticize FF13 for being a corridor, but a lot of people don't want to explore. They look up the guide online or hug the wall. And you can't hug the wall in the sky- so players don't go looking for bosses and discoveries.

Compared to VC1 I think this looks worse aesthetically speaking. I don't like the raggedy, thrown together look of the unfiroms and a lot of those design choices look downright bad.

I think your HP would decrease every turn if a heater was not present on a map in 3 and 2, so you can definitely expect some kind of a status effect, but if winter is the sole focus this time, probably several.
Double AP expenditure, lower accuracy and HP depletion were all present in 2/3 for different kinds of environments.

I once played a fantastic left 4 dead fan made campaign where random blizzards fucked with your visibility and not sticking near heat made you slower but of course sticking near them made the director load in a horde or special infected.
The question here would be: does the enemy have better insulating equipment?
If you are both the same then both rush for the heat, both need supplies and both have poor vision.
But if theres a better equipped force they can lurk in the blinding snow, be insulated from the cold so their vehicles may run better but perhaps can overheat faster? perhaps goggles that let them see better restrict their vision from flanking attacks?

The VC1 cast was memorable without the need for crappy designs that made the characters stand out like turds with a bold outline.
Why the fuck did they choose to say something as silly as "we're going back to our old designs" and then proceed to put stupid shit like giant collars, horns and make the main antagonist "Blaze the hedgehog" is beyond me.

I would actually argue against a sequel, some games just don't need one. I would much rather see a remake where they have all the content they didn't have time to implement in the original. The devs talked about how massive chunks of both the yellow and purple civilization chapters were cut out as well the obvious fact the Piastol was meant to be a playable character. I don't have a link but there was a interview with some of the writers and devs that talked about how much the game got cut down and how there was even a PS2 release planned but SEGA decided to put more money on sonic games and cut Skies budget halfway through development.
