Remember when people got together to play games? Remember when people trash talked it was friendly banter aimed at friends instead of someone trying to insult your mom with childish idiocy over a mic? I remember back in the days we could have fun playing arcade games or having meetups at a house to connect some TVs together for something like a Halo 2 party or whatever else we had to play at the time. I have friends over almost every week for some good old local multiplayer on the Dreamcast/Xbox/NGC/PS2. We usually play stuff like:
Gauntlet: Dark Legacy
Splinter Cell Chaos Theory Mercs vs. Spies
Power Stone 2
Dokapon Kingdom
Kung Fu Chaos
Gladius
Burnout 3
Mario Kart Double Dash
Sonic Shuffle
etc.
Get yourself a sixth gen console and a big CRT if you really want the local multiplayer life. Most games nowadays are online only to sucker you into the subscription service of your console of choice.

Actually wait, I lied. If you want Local MP + Modern Games you have to get a Switch. I know the prevailing attitude around here is anti-Nintendo but the fucking thing let's you play 2-4 player multiplayer literally anywhere and most of the major titles support multiplayer in some form.
Also if any of your friends have a switch they can do wireless lan for even more players on some games like Rayman or (I'm assuming) Mario Kart 8.
Plus you can play Metal Slug and Garou on the go with friends like it ain't nothing. Sage for double post + shilling.

It's just hard to find people online to play those games with consistently cus most older gamers interested in those games have already played them (or possibly played them to death years ago). I noticed you can find a decent amount of "party" games but decent CO-OP games are pretty rare.
Army of Two is a really really fun co-op shooter. Sequels are pretty bad but this game is fun as fuck.
As for something new, though not co-op there's Stick Fight The Game which is awesome.
