Assuming the next team has a total 180 in staff and attitude, the next game could be "surprisingly good". But no one will buy it after the shit of Forces.
If they somehow still get given a go-ahead, the next game could be better with the same budget, and any niggles they had before ironed out.

So, I bought and Platinumed forces on PS4. I thought it was fun. Worth noting I probably would have gotten it on PC if not for Denuvo. The OC creator was literally the only well done part of the game. The actual gameplay and level design was unimpressive or just worse then how it was in Generations. While Sonic Maina was able to Perfectly recreate the Classic Sonic gameplay. They blatantly advertised Chaos to appeal to Adventure fans and then he wasn't a boss fight or did anything in the story.
I don't get how anyone could be impressed by Forces since it's so mediocre, but that's autism for you I guess.

I would say every character besides Eggman was handled better in the Classic games, Classic Sonic was like a force of Nature who is summoned when the world needs him.
Funny enough they tried to make Sonic edgier in the 3D games, but When he was given a voice, it made him less badass, because the writers always try too hard to make him say cool or funny things.
Knuckles started decent in adventure, but has now been turned into an idiot for no real reasons. Being tricked isn't the same as being stupid.
That's not to say I don't like when the characters have a voice, but there's just allot more charm to the classic area.

Utopia really puts into perspective one thing that has always been missing from 3D Sonic. Openness. 2D Sonic was always one of the more exploration based platformers, with there always being multiple paths through a level, and entrances to the special stages to find in later games. I understand the dangers of going full open world, but wouldn't it be cool if finding all of the emeralds was a challenge again?

There are special challenges both in SA1 and 2. They aren't that difficult, though, but they do add a level of exploration. SA2 is better in that aspect than SA1, like finding the Chao or the hard mode.
