Looks like a norm to me. Cool kids play video games all the times, talk about vidya on the buses, i constantly hear them talking about them when i ride to my work. Back in school we had on IT classes a lot of free time to play vidya on school computers. Some even had starcraft, counter strike 1.6, quake 3 and warcraft 3. Had a lot of fun with friends.

My high school's anime club was run by a bigender fat autist with a neckbeard who called themselves Athena, but was full of kids from the football team.
My point being that, at least where I grew up, bullying wasn't really a thing, at all, and these kinds of niche interests were pretty uniformly distributed within the student body.
I also heard athletes, from multiple sports, talk about how much they liked competitive games and at least a few of them followed e-sports.

Let's say each school has a gaming setup of 15 rigs (Size of my Computer lab back in High school, and I lived in a small town.)
One purchased copy of the game per rig required, making for 15 copies.
So 15 copies X 98,000 schools = Almost 1.5 million units in sales.
And who buys just one game? Just one from each of the major genres (FPS, RTS, RPG) bumps those numbers up to 4.5 million sales.
On top of those sales you also have income from micro-transactions as 15 million high school students are exposed to these games every school week. You know damn well that sooner or later the schools would pick up the tab for that too so little Johnny stays competitive.
