Considering that most of the games are only sold in Japan and it's niche enough already, put in the licensing fees (same reason why Giant Robo just up and disappeared from the Alpha timeline with nary an explanation) for the series featured AND music and then the VA's…animation budget kinda limited. It's also a way to save space in game. Instead of drawing them full size, they use the SD style. The machines still show a nice range of motion in the newer games and you get the cut ins which make it pop out. The first time seeing the sure kill moves you go "woah" when you get that cut in of the full sized machine.
