Tired of waiting for good Yuri stuff? You want fluffy romance stories with something beyond schoolgirls, more content of your favorite couple or just sexy women eating lots of pussy? Then, how about to make them yourself?
Based on /monster/'s drawing thread, where anons learn how to make monster girls, this one will give sources and tips for those who want to create Yuri-themed pictures. If you find anything interesting or want to share your gains, please feel free to post.
Websites to browse:

/loomis/ is the 8chan version of /ic/'s begginner threads but with more constructive critique and less shitposts. The board is very slow but has interesting topics about drawing and precious books and videos in their sticky:

Recommended book for start: "Fun with a Pencil" -Andrew Loomis.
Fun with a Pencil explores the basics explaining construction and use of shapes on pictures. A very funny didactic book, imo.
Second book: Famous Artists Course Collection.
Quoting Wikipedia:
>"Famous Artists School is an art correspondence course institution, in operation since 1948. The school was founded by members of the New York Society of Illustrators, principally Albert Dorne and Norman Rockwell."
>"The original courses offered in 1948 were Painting, Illustration/Design and Cartooning. The Painting and Illustration & Design courses, which are still offered, consisted of 24 lessons, with a new lesson mailed to the student upon completion of the previous lesson. When a student completed and returned the assignment, it was critiqued by a professional artist who sent suggestions back to the student."
After reading FwaP, these lessons will become very handy. It will explain almost EVERYTHING that you should know about art, from the human body to picture composition.

Bumping this thread with a question for /u/: What artists and styles of animu you anons like? If you were a professional, what kind of Yuri would you draw?
Sadly, many of my favorite artists never drew Yuri - Well, except for Zunta who made his first with Valkyrie Drive and some guys that make illustrations for Queen's Blade materials like f.s. - but, when we talk about stories, Mira, Asagi Ryuu ( "I Fell in Love for the First Time" is a fucking Yuri masterpice and nobody can tell me the opposite. His piss fetish sucks, though.) and Ayanero Taicho are my choices. I like their mix of plot, super lewd, fluff and comedy.
If I were gud, I would create many /tg/, /m/ and /monster/ themed NSFW works with adult women or age gap. Schoolgirls are cool and all, but I'm kinda sick of them these days.

Queen's Blade is pretty nice. I like girls with curvier bodies. I'd like to draw all sorts of yuri characters.
Sadly I'd probably draw a lot of schoolgirl lesbian types which you are sick of. Monster girls are pretty cool too. Yuri villains in bondage gear would be fantastic. Amazons,. Skintight late, etc.

I don't have much knowledge about drawing tablets, but I read somewhere that the best way to be used to them is draw many shapes - Squares, Circles, Lines, etc. - over and over to firm your hand and adjust the pen pressure options.
Another good alternative for your problem is inking your drawing with pens, scan it and paint with Krita or Photoshop.
>Queen's Blade is pretty nice. I like girls with curvier bodies. I'd like to draw all sorts of yuri characters.
Me too. However, I would focus more on drawing women. Yuri needs more Milfs.

Yaoi has many stories with these kinds of ideas (Monster boys, Barbarians, etc.). I don't understand why so few Yuri artists try something that isn't slice of life or schoolgirls. I mean, nothing against these genres. I like them when they are well done, I know they have a fanbase and are more or less the core of the Yuri niche, but a change of routine wouldn't hurt that much, I guess.

The one thing about yuri is that part of the whole thing with yuri is the lillies and the themes of young love I guess. I remember reading something about how it's more than just girl's love but an entire setting and storytype in Japan. You can see it with a number of shows if you look for things that are shared between them.
I like that it has this stuff. But a lot of shows/mangas can be very generic in how they use it.

Man, they really can. I'd love to see more twists in the genre - like the ones we have with Akuma no Riddle or Mai Hime - but they are so rare.
While I don't like western lesbian comics, I will give them some credit for not being so limited with scenarios or themes. I think this the only thing where they are more superior than Yuri.
>Should probably try to draw someone easier but I think it's better to stick with someone I want to draw.
I will try to help you a bit, anon. But, if you can, try to read some of the books in the OP or the tutorials. Everything will be easier with them.
When drawing anything - be it girls, women, vehicles, trees, etc.- try to visualize them as shapes, not as they are. Characters are just stickmen with pieces of many shapes as body and a "surface" made of skin, hair, eyes, ears, etc. Think of them as plastic dolls or action figures.
Shizuru is drawn with 7 units of her head as reference for proportion. As you can see in one of the images in this post, each head is associated with a part of the body. Have this in your mind when drawing your stickman (always draw the stickman first and the shapes after, above it) and you will be ok.

It's sad cause they do have different themes and then completely fuck them up every time. I'm sick of capeshit entirely cause all the characters have like 15 different lovers at this point. Who cares if Poison Ivy might be a carpet muncher because next chapter she is gonna thirst for Batshit and do something utterly retarded.

I was talking about actual lesbian comics and webcomics, but, man, don't expect anything from the capes, especially if they are from the big two. You are talking about a genre full of remakes, reboots and alternative stories.
If Marvel and DC don't like it, they will press the red button and fuck everything. While I don't expect romance when I read their products, things like this are why I prefer anthologies and short or less popular comics.

Yeah. Personally, while computer programs as Adobe Illustrator offer many kinds of brushes to use with the pen tool, I think people should stick with traditional inking until they get their first drawing tablet.
The pen tool is made for graphic design and image editing, not for lineart, imo.

Been making progress. Realized one major thing:
I should redo what I have but make the proportions larger cause otherwise I wind up having to redo the face/eyes/hair a billion times cause I just don't have enough space/skill at 1 inch head to really do a good job. Either that or put it on the PC and resize it then clean it up then continue working.

Don't go beyond 7 heads. This will help you with your problem:
https://phillipshakesbymasters.files.wordpress.com/2012/01/drawing-a-head-and-face-in proportion-01.png
Use lines to divide and measure space on the head. Also, remember: the hair is the last thing to make when drawing a head. Eyes, nose, mouth, etc. come first.
I hate to use Deviant Art to give advice but since Shizuru is kinda cartoony, the manga tutorial in this post should be a better reference for the use of lines with anime characters than this link.

Anon, I'm a beginner too. I will not point and laugh at you. I will try to share a bit of what I learned.
Here, this is a sketch that I posted on /loomis/ of one of the Tower Girls. Never finished it because I don't know how to draw hands yet and they drive me crazy. I ever whined a bit about this there.
About your drawing, it's very nice for your first attempts. Here's some tips:
-Don't press the pencil on the paper and use light strokes to sketch. You will be using the eraser and strong strokes don't help.
-Train hand control. Drawing shapes when you can will improve your lines and make them less wobbly.
Some links to read:

http://www.proko.com/how-to-hold-and-control-your-pencil/
http://design.tutsplus.com/tutorials/how-to-learn-to-draw-stage-one-manual-skills--cms-23304
-The width of her body is kinda big for her head. In women, the ideal width is 1 1/2 head.
-Yup, her neck is a bit long here. It just need a little cut.
-Clothes are the last of your worries. You only draw them when the rest of the body is done.
-I see you tried to use the "Slinky" techinique to shade her hair. When using this, always stroke to the same direction back and forth. If you started to shade to the left direction, stay on the left direction.
A brief text about shading styles:
http://www.drawcentral.com/2010/09/pencil-shading-techniques.html
For your struggle with eyes, I will try to find something more specific to show you. Most of the Manga eyes are kinda different from realistic ones.
Btw, the Gerudo women are seriously underappreciated. We need more Yuri of them.

Yeah this takes time. I'm starting to be better though after doing this one a day for a few days. I need to drain my muscles to do some of these exercises better.
>-The width of her body is kinda big for her head. In women, the ideal width is 1 1/2 head.
That's helpful to know.
>-Yup, her neck is a bit long here. It just need a little cut.
Yeah I noticed it too late in the drawing a long with a couple of the other errors so I ultimately just left it in.
>-I see you tried to use the "Slinky" techinique to shade her hair. When using this, always stroke to the same direction back and forth. If you started to shade to the left direction, stay on the left direction.
Also helpful to know.
>-Clothes are the last of your worries. You only draw them when the rest of the body is done.
I drew this out of order in that I drew the hair partly before I drew the face just cause I was having trouble putting. Once the hair was formed and actually resembled Shizuru it became easier for me (mostly cause I was happy that it actually resembled her and was a major hurdle for me to even get there and I've always had a hard time with long hair and this time I just finally did it) to place the eyes but they still aren't correct there.

All the individual parts look really nice, I would recommend studying from life models to get the proportions right its cool if your proportions are stylized, but you should still learn regular ones first. You should also work on perspective and angles. The shading and fabric both look excellent btw. Some other hug from behind images - you could also have Freia turning Chisato's face towards her own for an incipient kiss - with Freia clearly smirking and Chisato blushing. Not sure why you drew her lisp big, she doesn't look like Saber with that big lisp.Saber's neck looks longer than rin I think. When measure rin left arm from her shoulder to her elbow, it looks like kind of long. If you stretches her left arm downwards, her elbow probably touches her waist. That certainly looks awkward tbh. Also, her ass is too flat for rin.
Another thing is, weren't rin and saber relatively at the same height?

Alright anon, I got you mate.
This was a good effort for a first attempt, but for starters, your perspective needs work, and all I can tell you for this is that you'll just have to learn it straight up from people who can explain it far better than I can. Pick your poison from this folder in the mega.nz page:
https://mega.nz/#F!es1BSKQR!spODyd0iaQmMelGA2GscFw!f8cG3QAK
Notably, Ernest Norling's Perspective Made Easy is the usual pick since it's easy to digest, and then Scott Robertson's How to Draw for more advanced applications of perspective. Not in there, but if you're willing to part with some money on amazon, (or even scanned for that matter, I think) is Marcos Mateu-Mestre's Framed Perspective Volumes 1 & 2, which I am personally learning from right now and prefer at the moment especially because he has a good sized chapter discussing 3-point perspective.
In using these books, apply yourself and copy the diagrams wherever necessary so you can hammer in the knowledge. Think about and use them in your personal work and sketches. In most cases, you don't truly get what you're learning until you can draw it and draw it without having to look at the study or the book. This is relevant to every resource you'll ever reference.
For Madoka and Homura themselves, their pictorial flatness is caused by a lack of form/depth, which go hand-in-hand with the perspective issue, so their general placement is difficult to figure out. Both their necks are a tad long, and Homura's right leg is nonexistent or in an otherwise impossible position, unless you meant for Madoka to be sitting on it. I didn't redline this so much as redraw Madoka's pose and make a new pose entirely for Homura so it made better sense to me. I'm not entirely sure how you intended for Madoka to be sitting, but in her pose, the ribcage and pelvis will pinch on the side opposite of where her knees face, if my interpretation is correct.

This folder is for figure drawing. I don't know if you're using or have used these resources, but I recommend trying at least one of the following, see what works for you:
Michael Hampton - Figure Drawing, Design and Invention
George Bridgman - Complete Guide to Drawing from Life
Glenn Vilppu - the Vilppu Drawing Manual; Basic Figure Drawing
Andrew Loomis - Figure Drawing for All It's Worth (https://mega.nz/#F!es1BSKQR!spODyd0iaQmMelGA2GscFw!3lEUVZyQ)
Using good anatomy books with any or all of the above should be regular practice. There are also two anatomy books you'll want to grab in that folder:
Stephen Rogers Peck - Atlas of Human Anatomy for the Artist
Uldis Zarins - Anatomy for Sculptors
And if a scan of this ever comes out, or you want to go the extra mile, Gottfried Bammes's The Complete Guide to Anatomy for Artists & Illustrators is the absolute best, all-encompassing anatomy resource you can get. If it's the only anatomy book you ever buy, you can't do any better.
Now, you're also shading with black. Don't shade with black, and if you're using Dodge/Burn, don't do that either. Those are common beginner mistakes in digital art, and they make your work look like you've smudged charcoal all over it, and it never jives well with the actual colors. In any case, it won't look good unless it was a black and white image to begin with. Generally, digital painting methods and processes vary from person to person, and tend to be split between blending and cel shading, one layer and many layers, but since I'm stuck in black and white sketching purgatory, I can't speak at length about this topic with much confidence right now. Mastery of perspective and form will inevitably inform your lighting and shading decisions too.
This resource, Ctrl+Paint, is typically recommended as a good, free primer - the second link is for one of the paid lessons. I assume you're using Photoshop, but I think the concepts will ring true whether you're using GIMP, CSP or SAI.

I personally don't use many layers myself to be honest, and most of the time I do my coloring in single layer. I only add a layer for coloring correction purposes.
About your drawing, hmm.. everything looks a bit flat. Drawing to construct 3d spaces is kind of hard especially for beginners. Sometimes I also do have this kind of weakness myself. I think that once you understand how vanishing point works, I believe you can draw figure a lot better.
Also, careful on drawing her neck. both of their necks are a bit long. You can measure this by putting a fist in your neck and measure it relative to the wide of your fist and your neck length.
The pillow where madoka is sitting almost create an illusion of her leg. Maybe because of the pillow that looks flat. Try to avoid drawing such illusion, it can be very bad in your drawing.

To practise your tablet technique, don't be afraid to trace. This helps refine your hand movements and can strengthen the necessary muscles in your wrist and fingers.
About layers. Think of cutting out shapes of paper and putting them together to make an image. It works in the same way. Layers can be moved, deleted, duplicated or put in a different order.

The Huion WH1409 Giano is the weapon of choice for tablets and its price is pretty good for what you're getting. The two Ctrl+Paint links in >>18572 are a good starting resource for learning to digitally paint, no matter your ability in traditional art.
I don't know what your skill level is, but regardless, it'll take time to get used to drawing without actually looking down at what you're drawing on, although I think it should be easier the better you are at using traditional media. If you're a beginner, I would strive to keep both competencies up, with digital taking precedence in the long term, though it really depends on your own preferences at that point since there's also the option of scanning your drawings and working on them in the application of your choice. The Giano's size will also help in forcing you to draw from your shoulder and elbow, which should be reinforced in traditional drawings as well.

Proportions are off: the crotch is always at the center of the figure. Your figure is 7 heads tall, so her crotch should be extended to the 3.5 head mark, which is why her legs are so disproportionately long compared to her torso. That adjustment makes the arm placement correct without actually having to do anything to the arm itself. Also note the placement of the navel on these references - female navels will be a bit higher than that, but still a bit lower than the waistline.
As for the hand, I don't quite have a grasp on those yet either. Something about the construction is off, but from looking in the mirror it seems like you're on the right track. Aside from mimicking the hand and looking at it in a mirror/camera or finding a hand reference that looks close to it, try Hampton's approach (I don't know the page in the pdf but in my physical copy it's pg 160):

Some tips, I think you been following a particular artist who did black and white shade then followed with coloring. I would prefer you to skip that black/white shade and straight forward go for coloring instead. You need more freedom in doing your coloring. You can balance out the color composition later on though, doesn't mean that black/white shade is really that necessary. You'll save time and learn yourself more about coloring technique as you go on with this method.
Starts with dark color, no midtones, no light tones but leave some space empty space on where you think the part that have lightest tone color. Since we're borrowing oil painting way of coloring which most digital artist actually do, it's best to start with darkest color. Then do the light color to balance everything out. From here, you determine the light source and balance out everything with light tones and mid tones. Don't be afraid to do some repair on proportion or drawing mistake. There're still room for repair despite you're in coloring phase. Hope this help
Ps. I believe there isn't much different on the way I'd do coloring compared to yours. Though, I would prefer keeping every step short.

Visual tips for my fellow titty monster aficionados (not drawn by me).
A bit of explanation: 1) don't lengthen the ribcage when drawing big tits, 2) if the breasts are that big, the ribcage shouldn't be visible anyway - of course you should also be taking viewing angle into account, 3) lay in your basic body shapes/skeletal frame first so you don't run into this problem to begin with
now go make some /ll/ with this knowledge thanks

>Must be the eyes
The eyes are too small, the lips should be more simplistic/more animelike/just lines you get what I mean? and you should leave out the blush.
That's just my opinion though.

No Mid tones is a bit over statement but do you want me to show you how it is done? Alright, lets do this and see if I can pull this out. First, you need to draw your character. Personally I don't normally draw a character holding a sword covering the body a with front view. Drawing with position like this is prone to making proportional errors. If I have to choose how to draw, I would prefer something like 2nd picture but lets go with 1st picture anyway since we're learning how to color. When you start drawing the line-art, I would suggest using a gray color with an opacity of 30%. The reason for this is to avoid confusion between dark color and your line-art later on. The ability to differentiate between dark color and the line-art is important so that you can see which one is it.

So we start of with dark color and leaves some space for mid tone and and light color. Depends on how bright the light exposure you want. The brighter the light in the surrounding, the bigger the space you have to be preserve for midtone and light tone. As you can see, the dark tone can also form a line-art. This shows you that a line art is not always black, it can also have color which is dark. You can put all these Dark, Mid-tone, and Light tone in 3 separate layers. Also, you need to know these 3 important types of brush that is used to color Dark tone and blending between colors. The first brush type is the basic brush. I used it to for drawing line-art and also the hair strokes. You can use the basic brush brush to blend colors between Dark tone and Mid tone or Mid tone and Light tone. After awhile you’ll find out that having only basic brush to blend color is just not enough. This is where the soft brush comes in handy to smooth them out so that the gradient effect from the color blending is much more effective. Sometimes the edge of the paint gets too soft and blurry. You can fix it by redrawing the stroke with hard brush and then smooth them out with softer brush. Remember to erase them with a hard brush too or else the paint residue will get smudgy. There is another style of drawing that uses mostly hard brush and Gaussian blur on some hard edges. This technique is normally used in modern “cell shading”. I’m not used to this technique yet but it is pretty standardize style. Another thing is the use of the eraser. It is very important to use the eraser in smoothing out the strokes. You can also use it to produce thinner stroke by fixing the area that is thick. Depends on which brush you use them for erasing. Each brush types gives a different result, use them wisely.

So the 3rd step is where you begin to paint the Mid tone in its respective layer. If the dark tone is too dark or too thick, you can always go back to dark tone layer and fix it with the right brush. You need to make sure the balance between mid and dark tone together looks exactly right. This process is where you go back and forth between Dark and Mid tone layer to balance out the color until it looks right. I usually turn off the line-art at this point because it looks rather confusing. I only using the line-art as a guidance where to paint the dark tone. There are artist who choose to preserve line art and then merge everything in one layer. I don’t really think doing this would fit into my style. As you go on coloring the mid tone, make sure you make a good use of opacity when blending the color. It’s hard to only rely on pen pressure unless you used a high end tablet. The basic tip Gaussian soft brush is one hack of a brush that makes blending colors looks so smooth. It is the softest brush you can used in krita.

If you balance out the Mid and Dark tone layers properly, you’ll get something like this. At this stage you’re pretty much all set. All you have to do now is the background in separate layer. About the Light tone layer, well this layer is basically an extra light effect layer which you tweak the layer properties to Soft light SVG or Soft light Photoshop. Technically you already have light tone in Mid tone layer when using the eraser or, you simply paint white into it to blend the color. If your color lacks of contrast You can make another new burn layer on top of it and boost up the contrast with the stroke of a brush. Try not to overdo it though. Things can get really ugly when you overdo it.

Here’s the finished artwork. I think the reason why I’m putting the Dark tone as the main priority is that, I find it really hard to get the right contrast color for the mid tone especially when doing the other way around. This can be demonstrated from the visual theory I found in 2nd picture. It looks like the visual on the right is much better quality than the one on the left.

Useful advice, thanks for the tuto.
I'll stick with your method for now, see what can be done. However, it does seem tedious to work on different layers for each values, I'd usually stick with one layer for the coloring and then reinforcing the shadow and light on other layers.

To be honest, the figure pose for this character is not suitable for front view angle. As you can see, it's hard to draw a light source into her face because of her hair thickness and how the sword is placed near her cheek. This makes the color for her blush not effective. If I have to brighten her face then the light exposure doesn't look right. As for >>35748 picture, the head size is kind of too big and that has to screw up her face structure while keeping the shape of her body balanced together. Even so, the face gets enough light overall.Another thing that looks kind of confusing is the length of her arm holding the sword.I'm not sure whether it looks too long or just right. So the bottom line is, getting the best pose really helps you to draw better while avoiding all these kind of errors.

It's about being organized anon. It also give you freedom to edit on specific color value only. For instance if you want a little gradient tint of dark tone color, you can do that with turning your brush properties into an overlay mode or something else.
