It's not about making them like movies but technology and making them look pretty. In many cases the spectacle is half the game. Like how would Max Payne play without the bullet effects? Or FEAR without the light engine and physics? There's a bunch of neat stuff in RDR2 like enemies leaving a trail of blood if you shoot them or struggle to keep their head above water if you tie them up and leave them on a shoreline. Having good animations and a graphics engine that compliments the art direction doesn't have anything to do with making games look like movies. The Witcher 3 looked like a playable oil painting.
That's just neat technology and it can be used in realistic games or anime weebfests like Dragon's Quest. RDR2 is one of those games that push the envelope ever so slightly, despite the pozz in the writing. Without that momentum of improving technology we'd still be stuck with atari graphics.

My point is that RDR2 and Rockstar in general have been dragging their feet on the march of poz through vidya, compared to other devs. In a way, they are a lot like South Park in that they are profitable enough for their corporate masters to stand apart and shit on those who others are afraid to touch. There is plenty of poz in RDR2 (and in GTAV, and RDR, even LA Noire), but it strikes me as more -honestly what the creators actually believe- and less what they feel pressured to include due to the prevailing post-[CurrentYear] propaganda push. I really believe all the sappy, cartoonish shit in RDR2 about slavery and native americans - where the people who perpetrated it are villains even below the criminal gang that you play as - is an honest conceit on the part of the Housers. The bottom of the map stretches west to east from not- West Texas to not-Louisiana, ending at the not-Mississippi River with the "great plains" being a little patch in the middle with mountains to the north. The top of the map goes seriously wonky, though, as it is an east-west mountain range. Not sure what West Elizabeth to Annesburg is supposed to be, but the names suggest Virginia in the east, which make no goddamn sense. If that's the case, they're a stone's throw from Liberty City where they could do a Gang's of New York style DLC.
