Not only is multi-platrofm cancer, but modern consoles are way more similar to each other than they used to be. In fact both XBONE and ps4 use an x86 processor made by AMD, just likes plenty of PCs do. If 2 different consoles have practically the same capabilities, and they both have the same exact software then one of them is redundant.

Most of those companies didn't start making games for PC until the mid to late 90's. Prior to that they weren't making games for all platforms. But making games for the big two (sega and nintendo) or sticking to a specific platform.
The fact is, it is SO much more difficult now to make games because you have.
X-Box
X-Box One X
PS4
PS4 Pro
Then you have to take into account differences in PC's.
Is it Intel, is it AMD, and then what level it is. i7, i5, and what version of what chip.
Then GPU's… same problem AMD, nVidia, and take into acount what version it is.
I remember a while back a game coming out that was unplayable on the 700 series nVidia cards because they fucked something up, but it was fully playable on 600 and 800 series cards. And these were all nVidia cards, just different series.
All this shit has to be taken into account when creating a game, and then trying to make it work on the massive differences between each. Back in the 80's all the consoles were the same, and even the PC's had basically all the same shit in it. Didn't have to account for people buying different GPU's or CPU's.
Games got more and more difficult to make as PC's started to have many different upgradable parts.

They're essentially running the same AMD chips. The difficulty you are describing in "codin fur all des differen consoles" was a problem BEFORE we had all of these lofty graphics API's and unified graphics chip architecture. The funny thing is, that's a problem, because in a lot of cases they just don't know what they're doing. They aren't working directly with the hardware, rather they've got a mountain of abstraction they have to work with, and they just screw around with things until hopefully they work. Either way do you honestly believe debugging is a greater effort than rewriting things from scratch like they used to? NIGGER
You clearly don't understand how modern games are produced. Instead of having to program an entire set of code for each console(like they did in the 80's), game producers create ONE set of code, that is compatible with Xbox One, PS4, and PC, because it uses an API that is readable by ANY console. Everything modern is running x86 CPU's. When you made a game in the 80's, it had to be specifically written for the CPU architecture present in each console. What you are autistically conflating is: writing an entire game for each console, and, optimization.
OPTIMIZATION IS MUCH EASIER THAN RE-WRITING THE ENTIRE CODE FOR YOUR GAME TO MATCH THE CPU ARCHITECTURE PRESENT IN DIFFERENT CONSOLES.
WATCH THIS VIDEO, FAGGOT. DON'T SPEAK AGAIN UNTIL YOU UNDERSTAND IT.

Most companies do rewrite from scratch, or at least build on to their previous engines to incorporate new ideas, and if those new ideas conflict with the engine it causes a great deal of problems. Some companies (like Bethesda) can't even get their own engines to account for all the possible variables in a game, and often leads to game breaking errors.
Then you have all the tedious shit, and making sure that tedious shit is actually functional and working.
This is a good basic on all the tedious crap.

Back in the early 90's. Electronic Arts Sega Dev team for a single game consisted of around 8 people. They'd have a separate dev team for the Nintendo version of that game.
Now they have reams and reams of people to make one fucking game. Games have gotten more and more complex, they have gotten large, they have to work on a great many systems using different hardware, and even your API argument doesn't seem to take into account all the other little API programs the game has to be made to utilize as well. nVidia has like 30 different ones alone. You've got the game coding, the text, the voices, the tedious shit (like creating a massive world). All add up to make a game much harder to make now, than it was in the 80's. Except it's not. Lets start with the first example. Electronic Arts, their early 80's game were PC/Apple exclusive. By the late 80's they went to Apple / PC / Consoles. Interplay, same thing. And various other ones the same thing. They didn't start going to PC and consoles until later. Some like Pac Man were done for everything. Other games were for specific consoles or PC. I want you to try to make a simple, functional game on the C64 using only period-correct resources to make it. I guarantee that before you completely pull your hair out trying to make a classic arcade clone, you'll admit making modern shit is a lot easier and a lot less tedious.
No.1350634

You're talking about coding a small game, with limited variables and outcomes, limited text, etc and had hard set constrictions. Vs today. Which has countless variables that all have to be taken into account for the code to function, it has pages of text, it has sound, it has tedious world building shit (where shit in the world has to be checked and re-check for functionality), it's got optimization needed for countless variations of hardware, the game has to be tested and re-tested on different setups by many different people, and so on.
So even if the coding was harder back then, which I don't think it is, it still doesn't even come close to being as difficult to make as today.
There is a reason why they have teams of coders, teams of testers, teams of builders and just countless other people working for years making the game. The size and complexity of it all is in no way comparable to something a handful of people created over the course of a few months. And companies like Nintendo and Sega would sell devices that would auto-test a game developers code for their machines and point out where the failure was. So debugging wasn't anymore difficult back then either.
