Do you guys know if there is any source code open or otherwise for any of firmwares of older dumb phones?

I know that Mitnick got source code for MicroTAC ultralite, but he never shared his score.

 No.999518>>999521

Sadly source code for a lot of stuff is just missing or has been deliberately destroyed over time. Licenses run out, old hardware on which the dev evironment lived dies or is thrown out after and upgrade, etc.

A while ago I learned that after Steve Jobs came back to Apple he ordered the destruction of hundreds of prototypes because he didn't want technology getting into the hands of the wrong people.

Personally I'd like to see the Transmeta BIOS source code, that platform was designed to run multiple architecture emulators but the only one which was ever brought to market was i386. They did demo PPC and MIPS modes on Transmeta hardware.

Isn't it kinda fucking sad? All that work kinda gets used and abused until it gets old and forgotten. Like a hooker. Why they don't give out the source code when it gets out of production after some time? Fucking good for everyone. People that want to thinker, company that can fix old bugs in copy pasted code...

capitalism ahoy

>>999521

It is very sad and 100% intentional. With proprietary software, the owner of the software dictates what the users are allowed to do with the software and they forbid the user to change the software. This means if the owner of the software doesn't like the software anymore, the users have zero choice but to follow the owner's desire. This is the reason why I only support free software because users will always have the freedom to modify and improve the software.

The state of commie computer and tech preservation is much much worse. Capitalism wins handily here too.

Reversing shouldn't be too bad depending on how old\dumb you mean. A good chunk of em are an arm cpu flavor with a java interpreter.

now that i think about it, nothings changed...

Brilliant.

get an old model

JTAG it

Vendors are shitty when it comes to legacy support.

There might be open source baseband and OS firmware for some older phones but nothing newer than 2G devices, and here in the US that's quickly being phased out. So basically you're left with a situation where your choices are botnet personal tracker or nothing at all.

Even if the firmware was open source it wouldn't matter because all of your calls and texts are logged and sent to Utah. Cell phones are fundamentally networked devices, so without the ability to call or text you basically have a glorified MP3 player or mini tablet. You're better off getting a flip phone or Blackberry (with BBOS based on QNX) and remove all the cameras and microphones, and just use a pair of headphones with a microphone when you wanna call someone.

OsmocomBB a good baseband framework for 2G and an experimental one for 3G and they ported the 2G one to replace baseband firmware in a few old phones. Also there's the freecalypso project providing both oss and foss firmware for the TI Calypso chip.

Texas Instruments Calypso based phones have opensource and leaked source based open implementations.

Unsurprisingly TI does not give a fuck about folks using leaked source for a product sold 15years ago and from a product line they no longer have.

This is the full thing including baseband dsp firmware, which is never open normally, on any platform.

>>1003364

This. Calypso is 2G only and no practical open 3G or 4G implementation exists.

srslte-UE and the openairinterface-ue require 300-3000usd SDR's + multicore intel cpu with awx.

>>1003399

IIRC freecalypso has shady licensing as parts of it are based on leaked TI source.

Experimental 3G osmocomBB fills me with joy.

But I do belive that opensource folks should drop 3G and focus on 4G. No point in dealing with the mess that is 3G, when 2G is done as is and 4G is simpler.

>But I do belive that opensource folks should drop 3G and focus on 4G

I get your point, but if they finish 3G, it might attract enough attention and interest for more devs to join in.

Which is more encouraging, and seems worth your time to join:

Project A

> made a 2G framework

> made a 3G framework

> looking for help with 4G

Project B

> made a 2G framework

> gave up on 3G

> looking for help with 4G
