For a start, free software is FAR easier not only to create but to reproduce.
I can make useful free software right now. You can all have free copies within a minute if you are so inclined.
I cannot make free hardware easily. At this point in time, I cannot make a whole computer (>inb4 a literal abacus) composed of free hardware. My only option is to purchase a reasonably expensive device or something useless to me. Hopefully the EOMA68 premiere computer card will change that. But even so, free or not, how could one audit a CPU for integrity without destroying it?

What do you mean? Arduinos are used as an educational tool, aren't they? Wouldn't creating hardware be an educational experience regardless? Wouldn't working on a hardware project (especially collaboratively) be a boost to a resume in the field?
